Thurman-Collazo does 1.1 million viewers on PBC on ESPN

thurman45689By Dan Ambrose: Last Saturday’s fight between Luis Collazo (36-7, 19 KOs) and WBA 147lb belt holder Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) brought in decent numbers in coming in at 1.1 million viewers on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN. While the numbers weren’t spectacular given that it was on free television, it was more three times the viewers ESPN’s Friday Night Fights was pulling in before it was cancelled after years, according to Dan Rafael.

The Thurman-Collazo fight didn’t bring in the viewers that was expected to, but it wasn’t a great product to begin with. When you put together a fight between a champion and an aging 34-year-old 2nd fighter like Collazo, you’re asking for trouble.

Thurman: I thought about taking a knee after getting hurt by Collazo

thurman444444By Dan Ambrose: Heavy underdog Luis Collazo (36-7, 19 KOs) almost pulled off a huge upset last Saturday night when he caught WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) with a perfect left hook to the body in the 5th round that knocked the air out of him causing him to double over in pain in their fight on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN.

Thurman, 26, says he considered dropping to a knee for a brief count to recover from the body shot, but because he’s a champion, he didn’t want to be seen taking a knee. It might have made Thurman look bad in front of his fans at the USF Sundome Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Thurman: I have nothing to gain against Collazo

1-EW5G5158By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) thinks he has everything to lose and nothing to gain in his title defense against Luis Collazo (36-6, 19 KOs) tonight at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida. The fight will be shown on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN starting at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. ET.

Thurman sees himself in a situation where he won’t get any credit for beating Collazo, because he was already beaten badly by Amir Khan last year in a one-sided 12 round decision loss. Besides that, Collazo isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies, and he’s up there in age at 34.

A suntanned Thurman weighed in at 146.2 pounds and looked in good shape. The 5’7 ½” Thurman appeared to be a little shorter than the 5’9” Collazo, and not quite as big as him in terms of his frame.

Thurman willing to prove himself against Maidana and Pacquiao to get Mayweather fight

EW5G4087(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) appears to be disturbed that he’s not likely going to get the September 12th fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. no matter how good Thurman looks in his next fight against Luis Collazo (36-6, 19 KOs) this Saturday night at the USF Sundome, in Tampa, Florida, USA.

Thurman sees Mayweather more considered with making money than his legacy. He feels that if Mayweather were to fight him, he’d be showing that he’s concerned with leaving a great legacy.

Thurman: I deserve the Mayweather fight

IMG_4731(Photo credit: Przemek Garczarczyk) By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) feels that he’s proven himself in his career to where he now deserves to get a fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) on September 12th.

Thurman feels like he’s justified to ask for the fight with Mayweather. Unfortunately for Thurman, his resume is rather empty of the top names at welterweight. Thurman has done a nice job of getting the middle and bottom ranked contenders at 147, but he’s not fought the top caliber guys yet.

Mayweather isn’t unhurtable, says Thurman

thurman8888By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman’s persistence in trying to get a fight against WBA/WBC 147lb champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is starting to remind some boxing fans of the way that Amir Khan has been after Mayweather lately in trying to land a big payday fight on September 12th.

Thurman insists he’s in on the Mayweather conversation in terms of potential candidates for his September fight despite the fact that Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellberbe is saying that he’s not someone they’re thinking about after he turned down a fight against unbeaten Errol Spence Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs), who they wanted Thurman to fight on the Mayweather undercard on September 12th for one of Mayweather’s world titles.
