Spence’s trainer: Thurman’s face was beat up after Bundu fight

spence890

By Allan Fox: Derrick James, the trainer for unbeaten #2 IBF welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr (21-0, 18 KOs), says that Keith “One Time” Thurman’s face was beaten up and swollen after his fight against Leonard Bundu (33-2-2, 12 KOs) in December 2014. In contrast, Spence got out of the fight with Bundu without any swelling in his 6th round knockout win last Sunday night in their IBF welterweight title eliminator bout at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman knocked Bundu down in round one of their fight two years ago and went on to win a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 120-107, 120-107 and 120-107. However, Thurman looked uncomfortable and stressed out from the pressure that Bundu was putting on him in the fight. Bundu was landing solid shots to the head of Thurman in every round that forced him to move all night long.

Malignaggi impressed by Spence’s win over Bundu

Image: Malignaggi impressed by Spence’s win over Bundu

By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi was highly impressed with what he saw on Sunday with unbeaten #2 IBF 147lb contender Errol Spence Jr. (21-0, 18 KOs) stopping a very game Leonard Bundu (33-2-2, 12 KOs) in the 6th round in an IBF welterweight eliminator bout at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York. Malignaggi liked the way that the 26-year-old Spence thought his way through a somewhat difficult fight against the 41-year-old Bundu.

It wasn’t that Spence was losing the fight at any time, according to Malignaggi. It was the constant pressure that Bundu was creating that made Spence have to think his way through the fight. Malignaggi liked what he saw from Spence, and he feels that he’ll be in a big fight either by the end of 2016 or in early 2017.

Errol Spence: Bundu is a range finder for me

By Dan Ambrose: Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) will be looking to try and do what Keith Thurman couldn’t do by beating Leonard Bundu (33-1-2, 12 KOs) today and looking impressive in doing so in their fight at Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman beat Bundu by a 12 round decision in 2014, but he didn’t look all that sharp. Bundu had his moments against Thurman early in the fight, and he forced him to into a hit and move style. The result was Thurman turning the fight into a boring affair that caused the boxing fans at ringside to boo him. They weren’t booing Bundu, because he was trying to pressure Thurman, but he couldn’t catch up to him.

Spence a huge favorite over Bundu

By Patrick McHugh: If 41-year-old Leonard Bundu (33-1-2, 12 KOs) is going to beat Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) this afternoon, then he’s going to need to overcome some crazy odds for him to do so. Spence is reportedly 100::1 favorite with some oddsmakers, and it’s not all that surprising because he’s got everything going for him in this match-up. The 41-year-old Bundu is smaller, weaker, older, and he doesn’t have the same pedigree as the 26-year-old Spence.

Spence and Bundu will be fighting today, August 21, in a contest televised by Premier Boxing Champions on NBC at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The fight will start at 5PM ET/2PM PT on NBC.
