Was Algieri weight-drained for Errol Spence fight?

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions7By Patrick McHugh: Since dispatching the normally durable Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) in five rounds last Saturday night in their IBF welterweight title eliminator, Errol Spence Jr’s win has been put under the microscope by some members of the media and by fans, who are looking for a reason to help explain why he was able to stop Algieri so quickly in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The latest explanation that some have latched onto is that the 32-year-old Algieri was weight drained for the fight. Algieri looked huge in the ring last night, especially in comparison to how he appeared at Friday’s weigh-in. Algieri weighed in at 145.6lbs at the weigh-in, and he was very thin looking like he’d taken too much weight off while dehydrating to make the 147lb limit.

Spence: I’m up there with Pacquiao, Thurman, Khan and Porter

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions1By Scott Gilfoid: Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) really showed off his stuff last night in beating a fighter that no one had ever beaten in that fashion before in his 5th round stoppage win over Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Spence feels that his win over Algieri showed that he’s right up there at the same level as Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman. Spence believes he’s in the top five of the best welterweights in the division right now after the punching display he put on last Saturday night. I think Spence is underselling himself. I think he’s better than all those guys by far.

Errol Spence destroys Chris Algieri

spence111(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) made easy work of former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) in stopping him in the 5th round on Saturday night in an IBF 147lb title eliminator at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Spence knocked Algieri down three times in the fight in dropping him once in the 4th and twice in the 5th. The fight was halted after the second knockdown. In the final knockdown, Algieri backed up against the ropes and was nailed by a hard left hook to the head that put him down. In the first knockdown of the 5th, Algieri charged forward and ran into a big left hand that knocked him down with a shot that sent him skidding on his backside. Algieri admitted afterwards that he had suffered an ankle injury on the first knockdown in the 5th round. He wasn’t strong on his feet after getting knocked down.

McGuigan impressed with Errol Spence Jr

spence92(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: Former world champion Barry McGuigan is very impressed with unbeaten talent Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs), who will be in action tonight in an IBF welterweight eliminator bout against Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

McGuigan says he thinks Spence reminds him a lot of boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard. McGuigan believes that Spence could get Algieri out of there tonight to do what Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan couldn’t do in stopping the former WBO 140lb champion inside the distance.

Algieri with difficult task ahead of him against Spence

algieri39(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Jeff Aranow: Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs) has seen his career go from a high him beating Ruslan Provodnikov in 2014 to win the WBO light welterweight title to the low of him losing two out of his last three fights recently.

Algieri was seen a potential star after beating Provodnikov, but things have really turned for the worse for Algieri lately. On Saturday night, Algieri will be facing one of the best fighters in the welterweight division in Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Purses: Spence $225K, Algieri $325K

spence97(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment & Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated #2 IBF welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs) will be receiving a smaller purse than his opponent Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs) in their IBF 147lb eliminator bout this Saturday night on April 16 on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Spence Jr. is getting a purse of just $225,000 compared to the larger $325,000 purse of the 31-year-old Algieri. If Spence beats Algieri, and then defeats IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in 2017, then Spence’s purses will increase by a large amount. He won’t be finding himself getting smaller purses against the likes of Algieri in the future if everything goes well for him. Spence is on the express train to stardom, and whoever gets in his way is going to get run over. This could end badly for Algieri on Saturday night if he hasn’t improved since his one-sided loss to Manny Pacquiao.

Prediction: Errol Spence stops Algieri for first time in his career

spence4By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs) has never been stopped before in his eight-year pro career, but this Saturday night it’s going to be tough for him to keep from getting stopped by unbeaten Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs) in their fight on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Algieri, 31, is going to have a very tough time trying to keep from getting knocked out in this fight by Spence because he doesn’t match up with the stronger, younger fighter. If Algieri tries to win the fight instead of just looking to survive, he’s going to be at great risk of getting knocked out by Spence.
