Golovkin-Jacobs fight possible for Showtime

Image: Golovkin-Jacobs fight possible for Showtime

By Dan Ambrose: If middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s promoters at K2 lose the purse bid with WBA ‘regular’ middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs’ manager Al Haymon this Monday in the scheduled WBA purse bid, there’s a possibility that he could put the fight on Showtime, according to RingTV. That could mean the fight would be on regular Showtime and not on pay-per-view. Golovkin is under contract with HBO Boxing, and it’s possible that they might not be agree to let him fight on Showtime unless he’s got language in his contract that would allow for him to fight on another network.

There’s talk that Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler could negotiate the fight with Haymon before Monday to avert the purse bid. If that is what happens, then there’s a possibility the fight would take place on HBO.

How Marcos Maidana Toppled the King in Waiting

maidana88By James Connell: The sound and fury that has been built by Golden Boy, Al Haymon’s team, HBO, Showtime and everyone else who has had a stake on Adrien Broner’s success, will now hopefully be quiet for a short while after Broner lost a deserved unanimous decision to Marcos Maidana.

The boxing press – including several prominent contributors to this site – didn’t give Maidana a cat’s chance in hell against boxing’s, supposed, next pay-per-view star, and the self-acclaimed heir to Floyd Mayweather’s pound-for-pound title. One can only wonder at why the odds on Maidana were so long: his style, punching-power and weight were all wrong for Broner; it’s fine to have expected Broner to win, but this fight, at its widest, was only ever a 60-40 one in favour of Broner.

De La Hoya 100% certain Canelo will beat Mayweather on September 14th

delahoya454By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya has recently said he’s not pulling for either fighter in the September 14th mega fight between Golden Boy fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and mega star Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s), but that’s not keeping De La Hoya from telling the boxing world who he thinks is going to win that fight.

De La Hoya believes that the 22-year-old Canelo will absolutely, 100% beat the 36-year-old Mayweather when the two meet at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Was Mayweather pressured to fight Canelo?

floyd7By Meyer Lynk: Everyone that’s deep in the boxing scene knows if Floyd Mayweather Jr. had it his way – He would never fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez 42-0-1-30. Floyd’s method of operation works like this: Choose the easiest route that pays the most. Every hardcore boxing fan knows this.

Due the low PPV numbers for Mayweather’s previous fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, (not the PPV numbers given to the public to save face and put a good light on the event, which all promoters do, but the real PPV numbers that are collected and was not given to the public and only to the board members).

Schaefer: Broner still has a long-term contract with Golden Boy

broner54By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer reportedly isn’t pleased with the news that Curtis Jackson aka “50 Cent”, is interested in signing WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) to his SMS Promotions stable.

There had been previous talk about the 23-year-old Broner’s contract with Golden Boy expiring next month in April, but Scaefer is saying that’s not that case. He says Broner is still under a long-term contract with Golden Boy and Al Haymon, his adviser.

Jermain Taylor vs. journeyman Raul Munoz on October 12th on Showtime

Image: Jermain Taylor vs. journeyman Raul Munoz on October 12th on ShowtimeBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (30-4-1, 18 KO’s) will be finally getting back in the ring after a six month absence to fight 36-year-old journeyman Raul Munoz (22-15-1, 16 KO’s) on October 12th in a televised fight on Showtime at the Ameristar Casino in Saint Charles, Missouri.

Now here’s the kicker: The Taylor-Munoz fight will only have brief clips of the fight shown to fans, as the main event will be Puerto Rican super featherweight prospect Jose Pedraza (10-0, 6 KO’s) facing Allan Benitez (7-1, 1 KO’s) and the co main event will be middleweight prospect Jonathan Cepeda (12-0, 11 KO’s) facing Lamar Russ (10-0, 6 KO’s). Taylor, 34, is ranked #6 WBC, #8 WBO, #14 IBF, compared to the two fights that will be pitting only prospects. It’s kind of hard to believe how far Taylor has fallen. He can’t even get his full fight shown on the bottom of a Showtime card with prospects put above him.

Khan’s December 15th fight could wind up on Showtime instead of HBO

Image: Khan's December 15th fight could wind up on Showtime instead of HBOBy William Mackay: Steve Kim is reporting that former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan’s next fight on December 15th could possibly wind up on Showtime instead of HBO, which is where Khan has been fighting regularly for the past couple of years. With his loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last July, Khan’s contract with HBO ran out. There were reports that Khan possibly could continue fighting for HBO. However, we could be seeing Khan with Showtime instead.

The reason this is significant is because of the timing involved. Khan has been beaten in his last two fights and his career is at a crossroads where his next fight could us a lot about which direction Khan will go – further down or back up. It’s no secret that HBO doesn’t like to put on fluff fights for the boxing public. In other words, they tend to be very picky about the kinds of fights that they agree to have televised on their network. They’re a lot more selective about fights than they used to be, and it could be that Khan might have problems in getting his next opponent approved by them.
