By Jim Dower: Premier Boxing Champions on Bounce TV brought in over 1.5 million viewers to see IBF World lightweight champion Robert Easter Jr. (19-0, 14 KOs) successfully defend his IBF title in beating Luis Cruz (22-5-1, 16 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision from the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio.

The ratings for the fight were through the roof, and quite unexpected to some, as Easter Jr. is not a huge star as of yet with the casual boxing fans in the U.S. Easter Jr. fought like a star with him knocking down Cruz three times in fight in winning an easy 12 round decision.
PBC is smart to have their top fighters like the 26-year-old Easter Jr. have his fights televised on free television like Bounce TV.

Image: Rau’shee Warren wants rematch with Zhanat Zhakiyanov

By Jim Dower: After losing a disappointing 12 round split decision to Zhanat Zhakiyanov last Friday night, former WBA World bantamweight champion Rau-shee Warren (14-2, 4 KOs) says he wants a rematch to get even with the Kazakhstan fighter. Warren thinks he should have been given the victory by the three judges.

One judge felt that the 29-year-old Warren had done enough to win the fight, as he scored it 115-111 for Warren. Unfortunately, the other two judges gave it to Zhakiyanov by the scores 116-110 and 115-111 in their fight at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio.

Jaime McDonnell vs. Rau’shee Warren in the works

Image: Jaime McDonnell vs. Rau'shee Warren in the works

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World bantamweight champion Jaime McDonnell (28-2-1, 13 KOs) will be facing World Boxing Association Super World 118lb champion Rau’shee Warren (14-1, 4 KOs) in his next fight. The 30-year-old McDonnell wants to take this fight before moving up in weight to start campaigning a super bantamweight.

It’s a move long overdue for the 5’10” McDonnell, because he’s way too big for the bantamweight division and it’s going to be horrible experience for him to drop weight to make the 118lb limit to fight against the much smaller fighters. Warren, 5’4 ½”, is a typical bantamweight in terms of height, and he’ll be giving up 5 ½” inches in height to McDonnell.

Weights: Lubin-Sandoval, Fonfara-Smith Jr. & Payano-Warren

fonfara100

(Photo credit: Nabeel Ahmad/Premier Boxing Champions) By Patrick McHugh: #2 WBC, #3 WBA, #4 WBO light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) made weight on Friday in coming in at 174.5 pounds for his scheduled 12 round fight against prospect Joe Smith Jr. (21-1, 17 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night Premier Boxing Champions on NBC and NBCSN from the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

Smith, 26, weighed in at 173lbs. This should be an interesting fight for while it lasts. Fonfara, 28, is seen as the far better fighter though, and this one figures to be a mismatch. Smith hasn’t been fighting quality opposition, and he was taken out in four rounds by a fighter named Eddie Caminero (6-3) in 2010. The Fonfara-Smith fight gives Fonfara a decent stay busy fight to keep him ready until he gets a title shot against one of the 175lb champions. It would be surprising if Smith is still aroun by the later rounds of the contest.
