Chris Algieri dances away with the title

algieri484By James Allen: This was not a fight Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) was supposed to win. How is it that a man who has never been past ten rounds in his life had the audacity to go up against the destroyer of the division and take his title away?

Ruslan Provodnikov earned his reputation as an undeterrable force in March of last year in a losing effort against a then undefeated Timothy Bradley. That night, Ruslan was just there to make up the numbers, having jumped up a division to keep the champ busy. He fulfilled his objective, visibly shaking Bradley almost every time he landed a significant attack and walking through whatever came back at him. Bradley out-boxed the challenger for large stretches in between, and despite taking a knee under immense pressure in the twelfth round, scraped through with the decision.

Malignaggi had Algieri winning a comfortable decision over Provodnikov

provodnikov029999By Chris Williams: While trainer Freddie Roach still insists that his fighter Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) should have been given a decision victory over challenger Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Barclays Center, the well-respected commentator Paulie Malignaggi, who was working the fight for the UK television company Sky Sports, said that he saw Algieri beating Provodnikov by a comfortable margin by out-boxing and outclassing him in their New York fight.

Malignaggi was impressed with how Algieri, the weaker puncher, was able to school Provodnikov after the 1st round and pretty much dominate him in the last 11 rounds of the fight.

Roach wants Algieri to beat Provodnikov in rematch before getting Pacquiao fight

algieri555By Chris Williams: If trainer Freddie Roach gets his way, WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) will need to prove himself for a second time by beating Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) again before he feels that he’s earned the right to fight Roach’s No.1 fighter Manny Pacquiao in the future.

Roach thinks that Algieri was given a 12 round split decision that he didn’t deserve last Saturday night in Algieri’s win over Provodnikov at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. What’s interesting about this fight is that Roach is saying that Provodnikov clearly won the fight, and yet Roach was heard telling him that he needed a knockout to win after the 10th round. Roach said in an interview after the fight that he had told Provodnikov to go for a knockout just to motivate him, not because he felt that he was losing.

Algieri: Overcoming the odds to defeat Provodnikov

algieri775By Daniel Hughes: #13 WBO Chris Algieri (20-0, (8 KO’s), overcame not just a torrid first round to claim the WBO light-welterweight title from champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) by beating him by a 12 round split decision in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center on Saturday night.

The Algieri story is a fascinating one with him being a former kick boxer turned pro boxer. He’s really has bucked the system in many, many ways.

Roach: We [Provodnikov] want a rematch against Algieri in a neutral venue

provodnikov67777By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is having a hard time coming to terms with his fighter Ruslan Provodnikov’s loss to Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) from last Saturday night, as he’s insisting that Provodnikov should have been given the decision by the judges at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Roach thinks that Algieri, who lives in New York, was given a hometown decision by the two judges that scored it 114-112, 114-112 in his favor. For this reason, Roach wants a rematch between Provodnikov and Algieri in a neutral venue like Las Vegas, Nevada.

Algieri’s promoter: If no Pacquiao fight, we’ll give Provodnikov a rematch

algieri455By Chris Williams: Joe Deguardia, the promoter for newly crowned WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s), says that he’s open to giving the beaten Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) a rematch for later this year if they don’t get a big fight against Manny Pacquiao in November.

That’s the first choice that Deguardia wants for Algieri, and he feels confident that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank will agree to put together a fight between the Filipino star and Algieri. DeGuardia believes that a fight between the two of them would be a huge fight due in part to Algieri’s background.

“That’s the fight [Algieri-Pacquiao] that’s out there. Bob Arum spoke about it,” Deguardia said. “He [Arum] saw the potential of a Pacquiao-Algieri fight. Huge…I’d love to see a rematch [between Provodnikov and Algieri] take place. Obviously, I’d like to see the Pacquiao fight take place first. I think Chris beats him easier the next time.”

Kellerman: Does Provodnikov need guys to stand right in front of him to win?

provodnikov7001By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Max Kellerman brought up a good point about WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) perhaps needing guys that are tailor-made for him in order for him to win following his 12 round split decision defeat last night to Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Provodnikov complained bitterly after the fight saying “I like guys that are in front of me fighting me.”

Kellerman thought that Provodnikov was partially exposed last night by saying “Does he feel that he needs a guy right in front of him in order to win? It seems like he wants to move on and doesn’t want to fight the guy again.”

Provodnikov: How could Algieri win by running?

provodnikov034By Chris Williams: Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) still hasn’t come to terms with the fact that he was out-boxed by a master boxer last night in his 12 round split decision defeat to Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Brandon Rios, a fighter with a very similar style as Provodnikov, predicted a head of time that Algieri would beat him last night because he saw him as being too skilled for Provodnikov to deal with. As long as Algieri stayed on the move, he’d beat Provodnikov, Rios said. And he turned out to be correct, because that’s what happened last night.

“To me it just seemed like he was running all night and grabbing,” Provodnikov said at the post-fight press conference. You see how he looks and how I look. I don’t see how you can win a fight running all night.”

Lampley: Provodnikov deserved to win fight

provodnikov029999By Allan Fox: HBO commentator Jim Lampley and unofficial HBO judge Steve Weisfeld both had WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) easily beating Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision last night by the score of 117-109 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, two of the three judges disagreed with them in giving Algieri the win by the scores 114-112 and 114-112. The third judge had it scored the same as Weisfeld in giving Provodnikov the win by a 117-109 score.

Lampley said “I personally agree with Steve Weisfeld that Provodnikov was the deserving winner of the fight.

“As much as I admire Algieri’s performance, I still have to go with Provodnikov’s harder shots and more effective shots,” said Weisfeld.

Provodnikov’s loss means no Pacquiao dream fight

provodnikov74By Chris Williams: Ruslan Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s) lost something much bigger than his WBO light welterweight title last night in his 12 round split decision defeat to New Yorker Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in New York; Provodikov’s defeat erased any chance that he had of getting matched up against Manny Pacquiao for a huge money fight for November.

That was a fight that was possible for him had he won last night, because he absolutely needed a win in order to get that fight. But with the way that Provodnikov looked last night, with him looking limited, confused and very much like Brandon Rios 2.0, there’s no way that Bob Arum of Top Rank will give him a Pacquiao fight.
