By Jim Dower: A purse bid has been scheduled on February 1 for the fight between WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker and his mandatory challenger Hughie Fury at the World Boxing Organization’s headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico. According to Fight News, the minimum bid is set for $1 million. The split will be in favor of WBO champion Parker by a 60-40 cut of the revenue. That’s not bad. When you compare it to the 75-25 for the IBF, 60-40 sounds pretty good.

As for the fight, the 6’6” Hughie is going to have to try and stay out of range of Parker’s big power shots, because he’s going to be looking to knock him out. Hughie doesn’t have the punching power or the hand speed that Parker’s last opponent Ruiz Jr. had in their fight last December. Parker had problems with Ruiz’s speed and combination punching in the first half of the fight.

Arum says Joseph Parker vs. Hughie Fury deal is close

Image: Arum says Joseph Parker vs. Hughie Fury deal is close

by Scott Gilfoid: WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker’s co-promoter Bob Arum says he’s close to having a deal done for Parker’s first defense of his title against #2 WBO Hughie Fury for April 1 or 8 in New Zealand. Hughie, 22, hasn’t done much to deserve getting a title shot against Parker, and he’s done less to get ranked No.2 in the World Boxing Organization’s top 15 ranking. Of course, Hughie is the nephew of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Parker, 24, isn’t going to argue with the WBO ranking the light hitting 6’6” Hughie so highly, as it gives him the chance of making an easy first defense of his title without worrying too much about getting beaten.

Hughie Fury in negotiations with Joseph Parker

Image: Hughie Fury in negotiations with Joseph Parker

By Scott Gilfoid: Hughie Fury says he’s in negotiations with WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker for a fight that will be taking place on April 8. Parker has two other candidates for his next fight in David Price and Jarrell Miller if the negotiations with the 22-year-old Hughie don’t pan out.

It’s not surprising though that Hughie is the one that is in the lead spot to get the fight with the 24-year-old Parker. Hughie is the cousin of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and it would be helpful to Parker if he were to whip Hughie (20-0, 10 KOs). That would help increase the chances of Tyson wanting to come and avenge Hughie’s loss.

Joseph Parker vs. Hughie Fury a possibility

By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten #2 WBO Hughie Fury (20-0, 10 KOs) is waiting for a call to get the fight against WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker (22-0, 18 KOs), according to John Fury, the father of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. The World Boxing Organization moved Hughie up to No.2 in their rankings now, with David Haye at No.1 However, Haye chose to fight cruiserweight Tony Bellew on March 4, so that puts Hughie in position to potentially get the title shot against the 24-year-old Parker. This would be Parker’s first defense of his WBO heavyweight title. Hughie would be a fairly easy title defense for Parker if the fight gets made.

#6 WBO David Price and #4 WBO Jarrell Miller is also in the running for a shot against Parker.
