Pacquiao to fight Algieri on 11/22 in Macao, China

pac8888111By Gavin “Neds” O’Connor: It’s a done deal sighed sealed and delivered and this delivery will be as distasteful and unwelcome as a letterbox full of overdue bills and tax demands. I am indeed talking about the news that the WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) and WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) are contracted to fight in Macau, China on November 22nd.

The deal was brokered by Top Ranks Bob Arum and Joe Deguardia from Star Boxing in what is sure to be a career high payday for the 30-year-old Algieri whose previous best purse was against former WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov in June 14 in a fight that Algieri won a shocking 12 round split decision win. $100k was the reported purse for the Provodnikov fight for Algieri.

Pacquiao vs. Algeiri at catch-weight of 144 lbs

pac653By Chris Williams: It’s looking like we could have a catch-weight of 144 pounds for the November 22nd fight between WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) and his lighter opponent Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) in their fight at the Venetian Casino & Resort, in Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Steve Kim is reporting that a catch-weight could be in play for this fight. In this case, it wouldn’t be a handicap for Pacquiao, but instead for his lighter opponent Algieri, who holds down the WBO light welterweight title.

Algieri offered Pacquiao fight on November 22nd – Breaking News!

algieri422By Chris Williams: In a not so surprising move, Bob Arum of Top Rank has reportedly offered WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) a fight against Arum’s No.1 money maker Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) for a fight on November 22nd in Macao, China.

This offer is obviously contingent on the Algieri’s injured eye healing from his recent controversial 12 round split decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov from last June. Algieri has 4 months for his eye to heal before the November 22nd fight.

“I hope we’ll be able to get Joe [Degardia] on the phone and we’ll be able to button this up,” Arum said the NYdailynews. “We’re talking serious now with the idea of making the fight. It’s not [BULL]. Now, whether it gets made or not I don’t know. But I can tell you the fight is there for Chris.”

Has Chris Algieri hit the Pacquiao jackpot by beating Provodnikov?

pac60000By Yannis Mihanos: There are two names in the recent history of boxing that each fighter wants to fight one day: Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. Last Saturday many people were surprised by Chris Algieri with me included. No one knew Algieri before the match. He was number 13 in the rankings and was expected to be easily dispatched by heavy hitter Ruslan Provodnikov.

Provodnikov did drop twice in the canvas Algieri in the first round. The swelling in the right eye of Algieri after the first knockout got even worse as the rounds passed, but he kept on coming with a lot of body movement and many mosquito bite-like punches to the head of the Russian Provodnikov.

Algieri’s many light shots convinced two of the three judges to grant him a 12 round split decision. The third judge saw it different with him scoring it 117-109 in favor of Provodnikov, and I have to say that I agree with that score of the fight. But boxing decisions sometimes work in mysterious way.

Algieri-Pacquiao would be a huge fight, says DeGuardia

pac777By Chris Williams: Joe DeGuardia, the promoter for WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s), thinks that Bob Arum of Top Rank won’t be able to resist the marketability that a fight between his guy Algieiri and Arum’s No.1 money maker Manny Pacquiao will create for next November.

DeGuardia believes this fight will create a lot of interest from fans of the sport wanting to see how Pacquiao does against the younger, and taller Algieri.

“I think Bob (Arum) is the type of businessman where he can see the enormous potential of a fight between Manny and Chris,” DeGuardia said. “Chris is someone who brings something completely different to the table in terms of marketability that no other fighter can bring. It would be huge, him and Manny facing each other.”
