Pacquiao-Algieri brings in just over 300,000 PPV buys, says Glaser

By Chris Williams: In what has to be interpreted as terrible news for Top Rank and WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs), his fight against Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) last month brought in just over 300,000 pay-per-view buys, according to boxing businessman Rick Glaser. The 300,000, if true, is the lowest pay-per-view number Pacquiao has brought in since earlier in his career.

The reason why it’s such a negative thing that Pacquiao brought in such a low figure for his fight against Algieri is due to Pacquiao wanting to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. If Pacquiao only brought in a little over 300,000 for the Algieri fight then it makes it difficult for him and his promoter Bob Arum to justify asking for a purse split of 60-40 or better.

Pacquiao vs Algieri Recap

by Sam S: Manny Pacquiao, who scored 6 official knockdowns (although only 4 were legit), beat Chris Algieri by a shut out scoring of 119-103 on two score cards and 120-102 on the other. When was the last time you saw a score line like that? The fight was over in round 9 for me after a huge knockdown, Algieri was counted out, for some reason the referee didn’t count properly and got caught up in the moment. Another knockdown followed but the clock saved Algieri. The fight should have been stopped at that time..

Pacquiao will defeat Algieri tonight

by Bob Smith1-Pacquiao_Algieri_weighin_141121_004a: For nearly a year and a half, your noted author has written informative and incisive articles and occasionally has even made predictions of upcoming matches, the majority of which were correct, with the notable exceptions of the Martinez-Cotto match up and the recent domination of Hopkins by Kovalev.

In researching the Pacquiao-Algieri fight, I came across a very insightful video that compared and contrasted Pacquaio and Mayweather, I thought very effectively.

Pacquiao/Algieri: Freddie Roach Interview

roach564How was it training in the Philippines?

FREDDIE ROACH: It went really well. We had a great camp. Manny really buckled down the whole training camp and we are really ready for this fight.

Manny has mentioned this camp has been like old times…

FREDDIE ROACH: We brought back a lot of the old workout routines and with Justin Fortune, his old strength coach, being back on board. We went to the heavy bag a lot with really hard work. Not too much mitts where it is flashier – we got more strength. We wanted to get that fire back and start knocking people out again. It’s an old school approach. We did a lot of strength work, and heavy bag work and he is punching better than ever. He’s coming to a weight that is better for him – instead of fighting at 147 he’s fighting at 144. We are going to have our first knockout in a while.

My Two Cents: Pacquiao vs Algieri

pac444Jay McIntyreFollow me on Twitter: @ANC_Boxing

When this fight was first announced it didn’t make much sense to me. After thinking about it for some time, it makes perfect sense. Manny Pacquiao is interested in moving down in weight to fight at 140 pounds and is probably interested to see how his speed looks these days against a rather quick fighter like Algieri. Pacquiao won’t take much damage from a fight like this and since it will be at a catch-weight of 144 pounds, Pacquiao can safely begin his descent to the lower weight classes. That doesn’t mean Pacquiao can’t lose on November 11th – he could get outhustled by Algieri like his stablemate, Ruslan Provodnikov was back in June. In combat sports anything is possible, and despite the lack of resonance a name like Algieri may have with many of us (myself included), he has an interesting skill set that can potentially make waves in Macau, China next weekend.

Final take on Pacquiao Algieri

by Sam: In my earlier article I wrote how this fight would pan out in my opinion from a neutral fight fan’s point of view. This article will be more about my gut feeling and I’ll explain why I feel the way I do.

To win this fight, Algieri will have to be at his best and fight a perfect fight. First of all from all the coverage I’ve seen on this fight, many experts have said that Manny will face adversity in this bout. I can see that happening. Some rounds may go Algieri’s way. He may be able to dominate Pacquiao with the help of his physical attributes for some rounds and that will frustrate Manny and he will get reckless. I’m not buying that idea. I’ll explain in detail why.
