Brandon Rios fails drug test for Pacquiao bout

rios59By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) has reported tested positive for a banned substance following his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision loss to Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) last month in Macao, China. According to RingTV, Rios tested positive for the drug methylexanamine, which is used as a dietary supplements. The drug showed up in Rios’ urine after the fight.

A drug like this could be used for a fighter to try and make weight if they’re having problems cutting weight. Rios reportedly struggled to get down to the 147 lb. limit after having put on a great deal of weight following his defeat against Mike Alvarado in March of this year. That fight took place at 140, but Rios rehydrated up to close to 160 after the weigh-in.

Arum expains why Pacquiao did so well against Rios

By Chris Williams: To many boxing fans they think that the main reason why Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) had such an easy time beating former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) last month was because Rios was never a good fighter to begin with, and was perfect for Pacquiao to get an empty win against.

Pacquiao-Rios does around 500K buys, says Arum

rios7By Chris Williams: It looks like Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) did worse than many people expected to on HBO pay-per-view. The fight, which Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum placed at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao, S.A.R., China, reportedly did between “490,000 to 510,000, according to ESPN. This is way lower than what was expected. That’s even lower than the 660,000 buys that Pacquiao’s fight against former Top Rank stable fighter Joshua Clottey brought in back in 2010.

Arum said to ESPN “It was be somewhere in the area of 500,000, and that’s what we’re going to wind up doing. It means 490,000 or 510,000, something like that…I think it was a success. We performed better than I thought.”

Rios to Kellerman: Do you think I’m a punching bag?

rios6740By Dan Ambrose: Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) seemed to get upset with the questioning from HBO’s Max Kellerman last Saturday night moments after Rios had been beaten badly by Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Rios lost about as bad as a fighter can lose when it comes to a decision, and he wasn’t a happy camper moments after the fight when the judges scores revealed that he had lost by the scores 119-109, 120-108 and 118-110.

Rios’ face was badly swollen to where both sides of his eyes and the sides of his face were swollen outwards, and it looked painful. He had taken a vicious beating in a fight that probably should have been stopped by the 8th round when it was evident that Rios was not going to win and was just taking a one-way beating.

Pacquiao won but is Pacman back?

pac6721By Gerardo Granados: It was great to see Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) back in the ring last night in beating Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision in Macao, China. His performance was really good but I won’t let myself to be influenced by his loyal fans and fellow writers who believe he is already ready to face Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Manny did clearly win his fight against Brandon Rios, and I had it 120-108. But let us not forget that the “Bam Bam” Rios’ boxing style was tailor-made for Pacquiao, and still was not able to knock him out. It was not a surprise to see that Manny still has power, mobility and speed; what did surprise me is that Brandon Rios was able to land a couple of good shots on him.

Living in Pacquiao’s Past

pac#5by Jordan Capobianco: No one ever said Mike Alvarado should fight Floyd Mayweather. Of course, Mike Alvarado is not named Manny Pacquiao. He’s not the only boxer in history to have won world championships in 8 weight classes. He isn’t a politician or a statesmen or a role model for a nation, and he isn’t the guy who knocked out Ricky Hatton with a killer head shot. He just isn’t Pacquiao. So when Alvarado beat up Brandon Rios, no one called for Alvarado/Mayweather. For people who aren’t Pacquiao, beating Rios has nothing to do with Floyd Mayweather.

For Pacquiao, though, and for many of his fans, beating Brandon Rios has everything to do with fighting Floyd Mayweather. Because Pacquiao is Pacquiao, beating a brawling, stands-right-in-front-of-his-opponent, lookin’-like-he-learned-how-to-fight-in-a-bar tomato can like Brandon Rios implies a Mayweather shot. Call it wishing on a star.

Pacquiao ready for Mayweather Jr.

pac#2By Carlos Gonzalez: Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) is back. He clearly defeated on the cards Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision this Saturday night in Macao , China. The judges very accurately scored the fight 120-108, 119-109, 118-110 in favor of Manny, who still is without any doubts one of the best pound for pound boxer in the business.

Pacquiao seemed a bit more cautious covering himself a lot more perhaps on the memory of his upset with Juan Manuel Marquez and was in the initial rounds awaiting a much better display from Rios. Pacquiao showed the boxing world that he is back in great form, He was as quick as always and with an amazing footwork that kept Rios running around trying to catch him on the ropes to fight in the inside in Rios´s style. Unfortunately for Rios, Manny is not Mike Alvarado.

Pacquiao dominates Rios

pac#1By Chris Williams: In a card filled with mismatches from top to bottom, 34-year-old Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) defeated fellow Top Rank stable fighter Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. The final judges scores were 120-108, 119-109, 118-110.

Pacquiao was able to hit the much slower Rios by at will with shots and make him miss when he would attempt to land his own power shots. Pacquiao’s movement and fast hands proved to be way too much for the slow-footed, slow-handed Rios.

Return of the Pac?: Why Pacquiao will return to form against Brandon “Bam-Bam” Rios

pac76544By James Harrison: Our most recent memory of Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO) in the ring is of a face-down and unconscious fighter– frozen at the hands of arch-rival, Juan Manuel Marquez. There are experts and fans equally paralyzed in this moment that give him little chance of a return to “greatness” because of it.

However, there is evidence suggesting that Pacquiao is not as bad-off as many think. A stylistic analysis explains why we’ve seen such contrast in recent bouts and why he’ll be victorious against Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO) on Saturday.
