Mayweather-Pacquiao: Scorecards, Punch Stats and the Fight of the Century

Floyd Mayweather winsBy Paddy Dwyer: In the aftermath of the richest fight in history there have been a number of observers who have sought to find a way to score the bout to Manny Pacquiao. For transparency, this writer scored the fight 117-111 in favor of Mayweather giving Pacquiao the fourth, sixth and twelfth rounds. There is an argument to give Floyd round twelve and an argument to give Manny round seven (or of course share these respective rounds). However, as a longtime observer of the sport, there was little on display to make a case for giving any more than four rounds to the man from the Philippines.

Scoring is inherently subjective and there have been a number of decisions over the years which have been hideous. There are also a number which, while not necessarily “robberies”, are contentious but one can understand the scorecard which was ultimately read out.

Pacquiao still sticking to deadline for Mayweather fight

pac012345By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao says he’s still got a deadline until the end of January for Floyd Mayweather Jr to agree to his side of the contract and sign off on it otherwise Pacquiao will be moving on.

The negotiations have become slowed due to Showtime and HBO still hashing it out, so Mayweather isn’t going to sign off on something that still hasn’t been worked out by the networks.

Arum: The networks have agreed to distribute the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

arum33By Chris Williams: Bob Arum, the promoter for WBO 147 pound champ Manny Pacquiao, is saying that the networks HBO and Showtime have already agreed to distribute the Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr fight if two sides can negotiate a fight.

Arum sees it basically up to Mayweather whether he wants to fight his guy Pacquiao or not because he says the networks are ready to show the fight.

There hasn’t been any public word yet from the network executives to verify what Arum is saying about the networks being willing to distribute the fight. It’s nice that Arum is saying both the networks have agreed to show the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao, but until we hear something from both of them to back this up then you can’t really say much. It’s just words from Arum at this point without HBO and Showtime speaking up.

Real Talk: Time for Mayweather and Pacquiao to put differences aside an give fans what they want

pac04By Thomas Cowan: If you are one of many boxing fans in USA who have paid to watch Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao’s fights for the best part of a decade, you will have parted with about $1000 of your hard-earned money and helped to make these two men very rich. For 5 years the boxing world has been desperate to see them fight each other and it hasn’t happened. It has to happen if either of the two greatest fighters of this era want to be seriously considered among the true boxing greats like Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and Muhammad Ali.

Pacquiao’s fans will tell you he is the better fighter. They will say he is the only eight-division world champion in history. They will say his performances against Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Oscar De La Hoya were far more impressive than Mayweather’s performances against the same opponents. They will say he will overwhelm Mayweather’s defense with his high work-rate.

Roach: Pacquiao is willing to do whatever it takes to get Mayweather fight

pac898By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach says that his fighter Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) is willing to do anything he has to in order to get the mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) in 2014, despite Pacquiao saying recently that he has no plans on leaving his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank in order to follow Mayweather’s instructions for him to get the fight.

Roach says that Pacquiao has offered to take the blood testing to check for performance enhancing blood, and he’s already agreed to let Mayweather take the bigger purse split. None of this has worked in getting Mayweather to agree to fight the Filipino star, who has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights. Pacquiao did win his last fight against one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters Brandon Rios, but this wasn’t against a quality welterweight opponent. Rios was dragged up from the lightweight division and he’d been badly schooled by another one of Arum’s stable fighters Mike Alvarado in his previous fight before that.

Pacquiao vs. Mayweather discussion

Boxing cannot afford to miss the mark at this critical moment. The call is to side with truth and stand in the gap. It’s time for every sports lover to take steps unhesitatingly for the good of all and the Sweet Science.

Reason is deaf to “reasoning” that insults intelligence. Halt dim “defenses” being proffered in media these days to conceal the light by hacks or by knocks. Debunk pretenses, for who can defend the defenseless? No moron, not even Gandhi or Hitler.

But why rush to officially announce the “Pacquiao-Bradley” rematch as reported? Are wily Bob and devious Koncz afraid that they would not earn the usual bucks from their cash cow in the proposed “Charity Fight”? They say the offer is serious but their actions tell it’s not. Why panic?

Pacquiao – Mayweather: A Fight for Charity?

pac#10 - CopyBy Simon Sheppard: Floyd Mayweather Jr. said – “Pacquiao wants Floyd to solve his problems”

On a recent article on a local news network Inquirer, Manny Pacquiao has emphasized the fact that he is not just in it for the money in wanting to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“I am ready to submit myself to any kind of stringent drug testing. Above all, I challenge him to include in our fight contract that both of us will not receive anything out of this fight. We will donate all the proceeds of the fight – guaranteed prize, should there be any, gate receipts, pay-per-view and endorsements – to charities around the world,” Pacquiao dared.

Robert Garcia: Mayweather shouldn’t fight Pacquiao at all

floyd89897By Chris Williams: The well respected trainer Robert Garcia of Oxnard Gym doesn’t think Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) should ever bother giving Filipino star Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) a fight. Garcia thinks the fight should have happened years ago, and there’s no point in them fighting now. He sees Mayweather in a comfortable situation where he’s making $50 million or more per fight, and he doesn’t need to fight Pacquiao in order to make big money. It’s Pacquiao who badly needs him in order to get a huge payday.

“Mayweather’s too smart [for Pacquiao], he’s too fast,” Garcia said to esnewsreporting. “If I was Floyd, I wouldn’t fight him. If I’m still making $50 million. They didn’t fight when they should have. Why now? I wouldn’t [fight Pacquiao]. He made $100 million, so he don’t have to fight him. If he loses, imagine. Just like [Juan Manuel] Marquez. I wouldn’t fight Manny anymore.”

Pacquiao thinks Mayweather doesn’t want to fight him

floyd888By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao is seemingly discouraged with his ability to get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. after learning recently that he wants Pacquiao to leave his long-time promoter Bob Arum before he’ll agree to fight him. To Pacquiao, he sees this as Mayweather Jr. not really being interested in fighting him. To top if off, Mayweather has been trash talking the 35-year-old Pacquiao as of late by saying he’s “desperate” for the fight.

Pacquiao doesn’t seem to understand that Mayweather is just trash talking the way he normally spars with his opponents – or in this case – his would be opponent before fighting them. Pacquiao seems to be getting upset with Mayweather’s ribbing of him. Pacquiao doesn’t understand Mayweather very well, and is taking his trash talking and requests as a sign that he doesn’t want to fight.
