Is Arum misjudging interest in Pacquiao-Marquez 5 fight?

pac7169By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is waiting for the word from 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) to find out whether he’ll agree to face Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) for a 5th time. Arum has been highly interested in getting Marquez to agree to a 5th fight with Pacquiao ever since the Mexican warrior knocked Pacquiao out cold in December of 2012.

The fight drew 1.15 million PPV buy, and the chances were high that it might have pulled in better numbers if Arum had been able to get Pacquiao back in the ring in early 2013 for a quick rematch. But now too much time has gone by and I don’t see the interest being as high for a 5th fight between them.

Arum: I’m confident I can make the fight [Pacquiao-Marquez 5]

marquez7776676By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was quite pleased with the results of last night’s fight between Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) and Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s), because Arum now has the much more popular Marquez as the winner for a possible 5th fight against Arum’s No.1 fighter in his Top Rank stable Manny Pacquiao for later this year. Arum is now waiting for the word from Marquez whether he’ll agree to take the fight with Pacquiao, and Arum feels very confident he can put the fight together if he gives him the green light.

Marquez would really sink Arum’s battleship if he were to turn around and say ‘No thanks’ to the idea of him fighting Pacquiao a 5th time. Arum doesn’t have a lot of other options for Pacquiao to fight for his next fight for later this year. Unless Marquez says yes to the rematch, Arum’s only hope for an interesting fight for Pacquiao is if Oscar De La Hoya can make a fight happen between his Golden Boy Promotions company and Top Rank.

Lot’s of Mexican fans are saying that it was not lucky punch that knocked Pacquiao out in their last fight, but it was a perfect timing that hit the “Mexicutioner” last December 2012.

Some fight fans do not want for Pacquiao-Marquez showdown to happen, but it doesn’t stop people from thinking that Marquez was about to be defeated when he delivered a single powerful shot with eyes closed that automatically ended the thrilling bout.

Marquez unsure if he’ll fight Pacquiao again

marquez777aBy Chris Williams: Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) isn’t sure yet whether he’ll give WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao another fight. Last night, Marquez pitched a near shutout in defeating former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA.

It was very impressive performance from Marquez, as he showed that he was the better fighter than Alvarado in every way. Indeed, Marquez was so dominant that he had Alvarado afraid to pull the trigger on his punches for fear of being countered by him. Each time Alvarado would throw something, Marquez would sting him right back with hard counters to the head and body. Alvarado’s punches rarely landed in the fight, and the final punch stats bare that out. Alvarado landed 178 of 510 punches for a 35% connect percentage. Marquez landed 278 of 627 punches for 44%.

Arum wants to stage Pacquiao-Marquez 5 in Macau, China

pac11111By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum doesn’t want to stage a potential fifth fight between Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) and Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) in the United States. Instead, Arum wants to take the two fighters and bring them over to Macao, China, where they can dodge the taxes that they would be hit with for the loot they would make if the fight were to take place in America.

It’s no secret that Arum would like to open up China’s huge population of 1.4 billion people to PPV fights. By putting the Pacquiao-Marquez fight in China, and then getting the Chinese fans hooked on seeing Pacquiao fight, Arum can then possibly start charging the Chinese boxing fans for future fights.

Arum is convinced Pacquiao-Marquez 5 will happen in 2013

marquez93By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has already met with Juan Manuel Marquez about putting a fight together between him and Arum’s #1 money fighter Manny Pacquiao. Arum knows what the ballpark figure is that Marquez wants, and he’s going to see if he can make that happen for September.

Arum said to the Manila Standard “we’ve had conversations but these things take time and they are delicate…compensation is what I’m working on…I don’t make alternate plans. I’m confident both will agree to fight each other.”

The last fight between Pacquiao and Marquez last December generated $29 million for the two fighters with Pacquiao getting the lion’s share of the dough with a split of $23 million to Marquez’s mere $6 million.

Barrera: Pacquiao shouldn’t fight Marquez again

pac89By Chris Williams: Boxing great Marco Antonio Barrera doesn’t see the point in Manny Pacquiao choosing to fight Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s) a fifth time. Barrera, who lost to Pacquiao twice in his career and considers him a friend, says he would rather Pacquiao move on and fight someone else.

Barrera said this as quoted by sunstar.com.ph “To me, personally, why make a fifth fight? Manny should think about his career if he should continue or not. He is a very good person.”

Yes, it would be a pity if Pacquiao fought Marquez again and possibly got hurt. It looks like Barrera is concerned with Pacquiao getting hurt by Marquez judging by his comments. He really cares about his health, and no doubt he saw what other boxing fans saw in that Pacquiao reacted slowly to right hands thrown at him by Marquez.

Arum says forget Mayweather; he wants Pacquiao-Marquez 5

pac007By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum wasn’t too interested in hearing the conditions set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. for him to agree to fight Manny. When told that Mayweather wants Pacquiao to first avenge his losses to Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez before he’ll consider giving him a fight, Arum told the Manilastandardtoday.com “Just forget about [Mayweather].”

In other words, Arum isn’t going to be looking to make the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Arum’s whole focus right is to try and put Pacquiao back in with Marquez, which in a way is a good thing because Arum is at least pointing Pacquiao in the right direction to get a Mayweather fight.

Arum to meet with Marquez this Wednesday to talk about Pacquiao fight

arum343By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will reportedly be getting together with Juan Manuel Marquez for dinner this Wednesday night to talk over the details for a possible fifth fight between Marquez and Manny Pacquiao for September. Arum BADLY wants this fight, as does his fighter Pacquiao, who was knocked completely out by Marquez last December in their fourth fight together.

Arum said in an interview with the Manila Standard “We have to figure what the deal is…he [Marquez] is not negotiating with me. He is negotiating with Manny.”
