Maidana’s going to get clowned if he doesn’t have a huge weight advantage tonight

maidana6(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Chris Williams: Mark my words, if former two division world champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) doesn’t have at least a 15 pound weight advantage tonight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) then he’s heading for a straight clowning for 12 rounds in their “Mayhem” fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maidana, 31, had a comfortable 15 pound weight advantage last May in scaling in at 165 pounds the night of the fight compared to Mayweather’s 150. Boxing fans and the media like to point to Maidana’s aggressiveness and his fast blitzkrieg attack in the first 4 rounds of the fight as the factors for why Mayweather struggled. That’s not it.

Mayweather looking to prove the critics wrong tonight

floyd3(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Chris Williams: In the last four months, WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) has taken a great deal of criticism from boxing fans for his previous performance against Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) from last May.

Fans believe that Mayweather’s skills have eroded and that he’s no longer the same fighter he was 12 months ago in his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Even trainer Freddie Roach has come out of the woodwork, saying repeatedly in the last month that he believes Mayweather’s legs are gone.

Mayweather focused on Maidana fight, not sure about Pacquiao match-up

floyd1(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Allan Fox: This past week WBA/WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr briefly touched on the subject of Manny Pacquiao when he told reporters that there were no plans for him to fight him in the future.

Mayweather wanted to clear up with the media about the rumors that had been circulating around about there being negotiations going on between his management and Pacquiao’s management.

However, Mayweather didn’t rule out entirely a fight between him and the 35-year-old Pacquiao taking place in the future. The only thing that Mayweather said was that his focus is on his fight against Marcos Maidana and nothing else.

Mayweather vs. Maidana 2: which kind of fight fans really want to see?

floyd2(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Matthias Predonzan: In four months of post-fight comments and articles that followed Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana’s fight, one of the most debated topics was the style of fight that Mayweather “decided” to use against Maidana, for a good part of the fight, which is to stay toe-to toe with Maidana to give the fans what they wanted.

Personally I love fighters who are gifted from the technical point of view. I like to see fights where both the contenders are good boxers but I also appreciate fights where, in the classic clash of styles, a boxer and a puncher face each other.

I find very boring fights where the two opponents are punchers with limited boxing skills and basically the strategy of the fight is to try to knock-out the other fighter, regardless of the amount of punishment that this may cost.

Oscar De La Hoya throws full support behind Maidana

maidana666By Raj Parmar: In a recent interview, Golden Boy chief Oscar De La Hoya made it known that he is firmly behind Marcos Maidana to upset Floyd Mayweather tomorrow night. This comes as little surprise given the well documented animosity between Oscar and Floyd. The former world champion believes age may be catching up with the pound for pound king and that Floyd may have declined physically since the first fight with Maidana.

“I’m 100% with Maidana,” De La Hoya stated as per esnewsreporting.com, “You never know because Mayweather is 37 years old. You age in boxing overnight.”

Mayweather knows what to expect from Maidana, says Rafael

Mayweather and MaidanaBy Allan Fox: Tomorrow night, WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) will be looking for his 47th consecutive victory of his career in his rematch against Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is a fight that some boxing fans are really looking forward to because of the excitement the first fight generated last May. Maidana showed that he’s got the fighting style and the power to give Mayweather a lot of problems the last time out when he blitzed the 37-year-old champion from the first round.

Thurman and Wilder pick Mayweather to defeat Maidana

thurman666By Chris Williams: Heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder and WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman both were interviewed during the “Mayhem” weigh-in on Friday at the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana fight card in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand hotel.

Both Thurman and Wilder see Mayweather having too much talent for the hard hitting Maidana. Thurman thinks that Mayweather has the kind of talent to make this a very easy fight if he chooses to by boxing Maidana instead of standing in front of him in a stationary manner like he did last May.

Purses for “Mayhem”: Mayweather $32M, Maidana $3M, Angulo $500K

_DSC2251(Photo credit: Idris Erba/Stephanie Trapp/Mayweather Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) is getting big bank for his rematch against Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) on Saturday night. Mayweather will be getting a guaranteed $32 million for the fight, and that’s not counting the pay-per-view money. Maidana will be making $3 million. That’s big money in Argentina where Maidana lives.

In what is a real surprise in terms of purses is middleweight Alfredo Angulo getting $500,000 for his fight against James De La Rosa. Angulo has been knocked out in his last two fights, and looked totally shot in his last fight in taking one-way punishment against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last March.

Floyd refuses to answer question at weigh-in about possible home court advantage

_DSC2120(Photo credit: Idris Erba/Stephanie Trapp/Mayweather Promotions) By Raj Parmar: It looks as though Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) is keeping true on his promise to fight at a lighter weight for his rematch with Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO’s). He weighed in less than Mayweather at 146 pounds while Floyd weighed in at 146.5.

Marcos looked very soft in stomach/abs area while Floyd looked extremely cut up and defined. Muscles don’t always tell the whole story of training camp for a championship fight however it is very clear Mayweather has worked extremely hard the last couple of months.

Weights: Mayweather 146.5, Maidana 146

_DSC2192(Photo credit: Idris Erba/Stephanie Trapp/Mayweather Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: A trim looking WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) successfully weighed in on Friday in coming in at 146.5 pounds for his title defense on Saturday night against #2 WBA, #3 WBC Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) for their “Mayhem” fight on Showtime pay-per-view start at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maidana surprisingly came in a pound under the limit at 146 pounds. This could mean that he was serious when he said that he planned on coming into the fight at a lower weight than he did last May in their first fight.

Maidana weighed 165 pounds last May and that extra 15 pounds he had over the 150. We could see Maidana bulk up overnight by rehydrating 19-20 pounds, which is what I think he’ll do. A couple of weeks ago before Maidana started cutting weight, he looked like a light heavyweight in training.
