Canelo says conditions for Mayweather rematch will be very different

Image: Canelo says conditions for Mayweather rematch will be very differentBy Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) says that he’s open to facing unbeaten superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) in a rematch, but that the conditions for the rematch would be different from the first fight. In other words, Canelo won’t agree to fight Mayweather at another catch-weight of 152 pounds like he did in their fight in 2013.

Canelo, who barely makes the 154 pound limit, wasn’t happy that he had to fight Mayweather at 152. It’s unclear if Canelo is blaming his loss to Mayweather on him being slightly drained from matching the 152 pound catch-weight.

WBC creating new belt for Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

floyd8282828By Chris Williams: The World Boxing Council is creating a brand new commissioned WBC belt to hand out for the winner of the May 2nd mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new WBC belt will be littered with emeralds and it possibly will have plantinum to increase the value of the strap.

Just why the WBC feels it’s necessary to create this new trinket is unknown, because Mayweather’s WBC welterweight title will be up for grabs for the fight. It’s not the case of the WBC being locked out of the fight due to one of their titles not being on the line.

Ellerbe: Mayweather might work with Golden Boy for Canelo fight

may219By Dan Ambrose: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said yesterday that Floyd Mayweather Jr. won’t be appearing on any of Golden Boy Promotions’ cards now that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer is no longer with the company. But that doesn’t mean that they won’t meet with the Golden Boy brass in the future for a potential rematch between Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Jr, Ellerbe says. That would be the exception to the rule as far as Mayweather appearing on a Golden Boy promoted card.

Ellerbe says that that the management person that they worked with in the past was always Schaefer and never Oscar De La Hoya. He said De La Hoya wasn’t sitting in on their meetings.

Arum: Canelo wasn’t ready for Mayweather

canelo818By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvare (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) was thrown in with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) way too early in his career for him to have had a real chance to beat him.

Arum notes that Canelo had only faced one decent opponent in his career in Austin Trout, and for that reason he wasn’t even close to being prepared to compete with a fighter as good as Mayweather Jr.

Arum says he knew it was going to be a mismatch going into the fight, but he didn’t want to tell people his feelings because it would give the impression that he was talking down the fight.

The Boxing News in Brief

canelo76By Ciaran McKinney: What a few couple of weeks it has been for the world of boxing, and it seems there is a new headline to read every day. The last few months have been dominated by the anticipation for “The One,” the showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout. In my my eyes at least, it lived up to expectation and more.

The unbeaten Mayweather more than confirmed himself as one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time by systematically breaking down and comfortably beating the so called ‘Next Big Thing’ in the sport.

Beristain says Canelo should have pressured Mayweather more

canelo65By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Nacho Beristain thinks former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1.30 KO’s) should have gone all out by applying a ton of pressure on Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) last night in an effort to win the fight. Beristain thinks Canelo could have possibly scored a knockdown had he gone after Mayweather in an all out assault from the start of the fight.

Of course, fighting like that would have been difficult for Canelo given that he had to drain down 13 pounds to get to the 152 lb. catch-weight, and knows how much muscle weight Canelo took off during training camp to get to 165 lbs.

Mayweather could make $100 million for Canelo fight, says Ellerbe

floyd784332By Chris Williams: The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez “The One” pay per view card has reportedly broken the all-time PPV record for the most money hauled in for a fight with $150 million and counting with 2.2 million PPV buys. There’s a chance that the card could still break the all-time PPV mark of 2.4 million PPV buys from the 2007 fight between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya. If it breaks that record it’s possible that the fight will generate over $200 million.

Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe is saying that Mayweather could end up making $100 million if the pay per view sales break 2.4 million. Mayweather is already set to get a guaranteed $41.5 million for the Canelo fight. But with the extra PPV sales above 2 million, he could wind up with an additional $59 million while Canelo could end up with a lot more than the $12 million that he was set to get.
