LOS ANGELES (Sept. 15, 2015) – Former Interim WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Lucas “La Máquina” Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) hosted his first-ever Argentinian media work out on Monday, Sept. 14 ahead of his upcoming fight with former WBC International Super Lightweight Champion Viktor “The Iceman” Postol (27-0, 11 KOs). Matthysse showcased his boxing skills in a workout session open to the public and spoke to the media about his upcoming fight. Matthysse and Postol will square off for the vacant WBC World Super Lightweight Championship in a 12-round bout on October 3 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

The fight will be televised by HBO. If Matthysse can get past the tall 5’11” Postol, he has a chance to be the next opponent for superstar Manny Pacquiao when he returns to the ring in February or March in 2016, according to the LA Times. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum likes the idea of matching Pacquiao against the slugger Matthysse.

It’s unclear how Matthysse is going to be able to deal with Postol’s 4 ½” height advantage when the two fighters get inside the ring on October 3rd to fight for the vacant WBC light welterweight title on Showtime Championship Boxing from the StubHub Center, in Carson, California.

The Postol-Matthysse fight will be for the vacant WBC World light welterweight title that was recently stripped from Danny Garcia, and the fight will be staged at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

It’s a good fight matching the hard hitting Argentinian Matthysse against the unbeaten Ukrainian Postol. Its two different styles that we’re going to be seeing. Postol is a tall 5’11” known for his high volume punch output.

Postol vs. Matthysse has been ordered by the World Boxing Council to fight for the vacant WBC 140 pound title that was recently stripped from champion Danny Garcia, who had failed to defend the belt for well over a year.

Garcia had just been sitting on the title while taking one catch-weight fight after another in the welterweight division.

Danny Garcia relinquishing WBC light welterweight title

garcia74By Dan Ambrose: In a long overdue move, WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) will be giving up his WBC title, according to the World Boxing Council. The 27-year-old Garcia hasn’t defended his WBC 140 pound title since winning a controversial decision in Puerto Rico last year in March against Mauricio Herrera.

In Garcia’s last two fights since then, he’s beaten lightweight Rod Salka and Lamont Peterson at welterweight at catch-weights. With Garcia now reportedly signed to fight welterweight Paulie Malignaggi on August 1st in yet another welterweight contest, the WBC chose to have Garcia’s WBC light welterweight title removed and made vacant.

Danny Garcia gives up WBC 140lb title, Matthysse – Postol to fight for it

Danny Garcia spoke to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and after a very emotional conversation, agreed to relinquish his Green and Gold belt. The World Boxing Council has declared the WBC super lightweight title vacant. Danny’s weight situation forced his decision to fight at welterweight and confirmed his physical ability to compete in that division while assessing the possibility of returning to 140 pounds.
