Can Murray beat Martinez?

murray11(Photos Courtesy HBO/Will Hart) By Thomas Cowan: This Saturday, British middleweight Martin Murray faces WBC middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Martinez hasn’t fought in Argentina for 11 years and the crowd is expected to exceed 40,000.

The Argentinian president is expected to attend which shows how highly Martinez is regarded in his homeland. Martinez was voted to most popular sportsman in Argentina ahead of soccer star Lionel Messi and anyone who knows anything about soccer will know that’s a big deal.

The nationality of Martinez’s opponent is definitely no coincidence. As soon as it was announced that he’d be fighting in Argentina, I knew he would pick Murray as his opponent.

Sergio Martinez vs Martin Murray: Murray looks to spoil Maravilla’s homecoming

martinez11(Photos Courtesy HBO/Will Hart) By Peter Wells: It has been 11 long years, and many, many wins and titles since Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez fought in the country that raised him. That night Francisco Antonio Mora was the opponent and no one in the same building as Sergio would have had the slightest clue of what greatness Martinez would achieve in the that time before returning to his homeland. He left Argentina an unknown novice and he returns a national hero. Martinez’s status is so large in Argentina he is now even bigger in his homeland than football superstar Lionel Messi.

So who better to take on the daunting task than the un-nerved and quietly confident Englishman, Martin Murray. Murray is relishing the opportunity and joins a trio of Englishmen to face the Middleweights best. Murray hopes though that he will not suffer the same fate as his fellow countrymen (Darren Barker was stopped in the 11th and Matthew Macklin was pulled out at the end of the 11th). Murray is a huge, and I mean HUGE underdog going into tomorrow night, but the odds didn’t favour him much better when he set foot in Felix Sturm’s homeland of Germany in December 2011.

Martin Murray will have to pressure Sergio Martinez to win

Sergio Martinez vs Martin Murray(Photos Courtesy HBO/Will Hart) By Scott Gilfoid: Let’s get this straight right away: Challenger Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) doesn’t have much of a chance of beating WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) in their fight this Saturday night at the Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina.

Murray won’t be able to beat the 38-year-old Martinez by running around on the outside like his fellow countrymen Darren Barker and Matthew Macklin tried to do to beat Martinez. It was a total failure with Martinez stopping both of the fighters. Those two fighters wasted any chance they had in winning the fight by fighting defensively instead of making Martinez work hard by pressuring him to show his aging skills.

Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez vs. undefeated Martin Murray

martinez2by James Le Blanc: I have become accustomed to continuously seeing Sergio Martinez’s name go up and down in the top 10 p4p rankings and it irritates me incredibly that he has never reached number one, at least for a short period of time. Since 2010 defeating Kelly Pavlik, Sergio has dominated his opponents, he has dominated his weight class, and he has dominated the sport.

Let’s recap to solidify my argument here. After the fight with Pavlik, Sergio fought a rematch with Paul Williams who had controversially defeated him before. We remember the knockout, the vicious hook that made people worry about the well being of Paul Williams. Since that giant victory over a much feared and over-sized middleweight in Williams, Martinez went on to fight Dzinziruk.

Hatton: Martin Murray has great chance of beating Sergio Martinez

murray322By Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Ricky Hatton thinks WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) is ready to be beaten by his fighter #3 WBC Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) on April 27th at Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Hatton said to BoxNation “I think this is the right fight at the right time. Sergio is 38. He was holding on for dear life against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the last round. We’re not going in there to be second best. We’re going in there to take the title. I think Martin takes it on points or a late stoppage.”

Martin said “I’m just focused at getting in the ring and getting the job done. One way or another, I’ll find a way to beat him.”

Sergio Martinez – Martin Murray to have instant replay available for their April 27th bout

martinez7 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) and Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) will have instant replay available for their April 27th fight in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It’s unclear under what circumstances it’ll be used, and how often.

It’s too bad Martinez didn’t have instant replay available for his fight against Kermit Cintron in February 2009, because it would have resulted in Martinez winning by a 7th round knockout instead of receiving a draw in this mostly one-sided fight.

Sergio Martinez vs. Martin Murray almost sold out

martinez452By Allan Fox: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) will be fighting in front of a packed house when he makes his first defense of his title against Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) on April 27th at the Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

According to ole.com.ar, there are few tickets left of the 40,000+ tickets that went on sale for the 48,000 seat stadium, and those tickets are likely to go quickly within the next 30 days as the fight draws nearer. That shows you how popular the 38-year-old Martinez has become in his home country of Argentina.

Maravilla’s Dilemma

martinez45By Lance Lank: Sergio Martinez often cries about other fighters not being willing to fight him. He cries about Cotto, Pacquiao, and Mayweather. But when one looks at Martinez’s record it is really not as impressive as one would think after hearing him whine about being avoided. The only names on his resume that most boxing fans recognize is Paul Williams twice, Kermit Cintron, Kelly Pavlik and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Williams beat Martinez in their first fight, Cintron, who isn’t even an elite fighter, fought well enough to earn a draw, and Chavez Jr. lacks any real boxing ability.

Martinez has one good win, which is Paul Williams in the rematch. He also beat Pavlik, but Bernard Hopkins had already schooled and exposed Pavlik. In fact, Pavlik never did anything against the then 44 year old Hopkins but get beat up all night, whereas against Martinez Pavlik had his moments and it came down to the championship rounds when Pavlik started bleeding profusely and his vision was greatly affected.

Sergio Martinez talks Chavez Jr. & Golovkin

martinez2By Allan Fox: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) turns 38-years-old today as he gets ready for his first defense of his WBC title against unbeaten #12 WBC Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) on April 27th at the Estadio José Amalfitani, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina.

Martinez says he’s open to facing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. again in a rematch, but he wants him to agree to random blood testing for performance enhancing drugs before he’ll agree to face him again. Thus far, Martinez hasn’t heard anything from Chavez Jr. about whether he’ll agree to the testing.
