Martin Murray faces Domenico Spada this Saturday in Monte Carlo

murray56555By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC, #3 IBF middleweight contender Martin Murray (28-1, 12 KOs) will be defending his World Boxing Council Silver 160 pound strap against the recently knocked out 34-year-old Domenico Spada (39-5, 19 KOs) in a 12 round bout this Saturday night at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

There’s talk of the 32-year-old Murray getting a title shot against WBA Super world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next year in February if Murray is open to the idea of taking the fight. While Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says that Murray is someone they’d be interested in fighting, I can’t see it happening.

Martin Murray vs. Domenico Spada on October 25th in Monte Carlo

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Martin Murray (28-1-1, 12 KOs) will be back in the ring in two months to face #8 WBC Domenico Spada (38-5, 19 KOs) on October 25th at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The soon to be 32-year-old Murray will have his WBC Silver middleweight strap on the line for the fight. Murray will be defending the strap for the first time since winning it last June in beating Max Bursak by a 12 round decision.

It’s hard to know what Murray’s end game is in defending the Silver belt. Is this the ultimate achievement for him? Murray’s ranked at #1 WBC, #3 IBF, and he should have gone for a fight against WBA champion Gennady Golovkin last year when he was interested in fighting him. But instead of fighting Golovkin, Murray fought Sergey Khomitsky, Ishmael Tetteh and Bursak. Great fights, those were not.

Martin Murray hoping he’ll become popular like Froch in the UK

murray56555By Scott Gilfoid: At 31, fame has eluded British middleweight Martin Murray (27-1-1, 12 O’s) as he’s failed each time he stepped up to the plate against quality opposition. But he’s hoping that he can follow in the footsteps of fellow Brit Carl Froch by going outside of the UK to take fights against various opponents, and then return to sellout crowds the way that Froch did.

Froch become popular by taking part in the Super Six tournament, which matched him against fighters from the United States, Denmark and Germany. Froch did okay except for his fights against the talented Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell. Both of those guys beat him, but he was given a controversial win over Dirrell. After the Super Six ended in 2011, Froch was all of a sudden popular, even though he got beaten in the tourney.

Weights: Murray 159, Bursak 160.5

murray555By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC, #3 WBA Martin Murray (27-1-1, 12 KO’s) weighed in on Friday for his clash on Saturday night against Max Bursak (29-2-1, 12 KO’s). Murray, who believes that he’s got the talent to beat WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto with no problems, weighed in at 159. Bursak weighed 160.5.

The fight will be taking place at the Casino de Monte Carlo Salle Medecin, Monte Carlo, Monaco. Bursak lost his last fight to Jarrod Fletcher earlier this year. It’s kind of perplexing why a middleweight contender this long in the tooth and ranked as high as he is by the WBA and WBC is fighting a guy coming off of a loss the way Bursak is. It’s very strange, because usually once guys fight for world titles, they continue to fight opposition that are winning their fights, not losing them. It strikes me as a little strange, and more than a little self-defeating.

Martin Murray: I’m a level above Bursak

murray555555(Photo credit: GoldenGlovesSA) By Scott Gilfoid: A drained looking Martin Murray (27-1-1, 12 KO’s) spoke the obvious when he said this about his opponent for Saturday Max Bursak (29-2-1, 12 KO’s), “We are both in great shape, but I’m a level above Bursak and I will show that.” It kind of goes without saying that Murray is a level above Bursak, but it also reflects on Murray that he’s still fighting guys like Bursak after having failed on two attempts to capture a world title at 160.

Murray, #2 WBC, #3 IBF, #13 WBO, will be facing #8 WBA Bursak this Saturday, June 21st at the Casino de Monte Carlo Salle Medecin, Monte Carlo, Monaco. A win for the 31-year-old Murray will either lead to additional tune-ups for possibly against one of the 160-pound world champions.

If Murray does challenge for a world title, it’s not likely to be against WBA champion Gennady Golovkin, because he’s looking for bigger fights against the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Carl Froch.

Martin Murray vs. Max Bursak this Saturday in Monaco

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC, #3 IBF, #13 WBO Martin Murray will be fighting this Saturday night against #8 WBA Max Bursak (29-2-1, 12 KO’s) in a 12 round bout at the Casino de Monte Carlo Salle Medecin, Monte Carlo, Monaco. This is yet another tune-up fight for the idea of improving the 31-year-old Murray for another world title shot.

Bursak lost his last fight to Jarrod Fletcher last February in a fight where he looked horrible. Bursak also has a 12 round lopsided decision loss to Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam to years ago in 2012.
Why Murray wanted to fight a guy coming off of a loss is unclear. I mean, where’s the gain if you know you’re fighting a guy who was schooled by Fletcher? For me, that would kill motivation I would have in fighting the guy, and I would tell my promoter ‘No thanks, find someone else.’

Martin Murray’s promoter targeting IBF 160lb champ Sam Soliman for him

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: Rodney Berman, the promoter for former world title challenger Martin Murray (27-1-1, 12 KO’s) has made contract with IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman’s management about a fight between Murray and Soliman that Berman would like to setup for this October. Murray was already beaten by former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez last year in April in a failed attempt to capture the 39-year-old Sergio’s WBC strap.

Since that time, #4 WBC Murray has picked up two victories over little known opponents Ishmael Tetteh and Sergey Khomitsky, and Murray is now ready to fight for another world title against the 40-year-old Soliman for his IBF middleweight strap.
