By Scott Gilfoid: Former three time world title challenger Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) weighed in successfully on Thursday for his super middleweight debut on Friday against little known George Beroshvili (19-5-2, 12 KOs) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Murray weighed in at 12st 4lbs 4oz, and his overmatched opponent Beroshvili came in at 11st 13lbs.

Murray, 32, recently signed on with Eddie Hearn and his Matchroom Sport stable. He’s hoping that he can be built up slowly by Hearn and eventually matched up against the likes of Carl Froch, James DeGale and George Groves.

Martin Murray thinks his punching power will improve at 168

murray88By Scott Gilfoid: Former three time world title challenger Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) believes that his move up in weight to super middleweight is going to help increase his punching power. Goodness knows, Murray showed very little power during his career in fighting in the 160 pound division.

Murray is going to need a considerable bump up in the power department for him to be a factor at 168. Murray looked very weak in his 11th round knockout loss to WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin last February.

Martin Murray wants DeGale and Groves

golovkin42222(Martin Murray seen here trying his best to hide behind his clam-shell guard while Gennady Golovkin blasts away at him) By Scott Gilfoid: Now that Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) has signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport promotional stable, the 32-year-old fighter would like to get fights against George Groves and IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale.

After talking about it for the past month, Murray is moving up to the super middleweight division to try and make something happen in that weight class. Goodness knows, Murray tried like heck to find success at 160, but the hulking fighter was beaten almost every time he stepped up a level.

Martin Murray signs with Matchroom Sport, moving to 168

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport promotional company just added another important fighter to their stable on Friday with the signing of former world title challenger Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) to their growing stable. With his contract with Sky Sports, Hearn is adding top British fighters left and right. He’s like a giant vacuum with his ability to attract the top fighters in the UK to his Matchroom Sport stable.

Adding the 32-year-old Murray isn’t nearly as big an addition to his team as the signing in the past of the likes of Carl Froch and Kell Brook, but having Murray on the team will let Hearn mix and match guys in his stable against each other.

Chavez Jr. to fight in June or July, wants Macklin or Martin Murray

chavez524By Dan Ambrose: After having quit on his stool in his last fight against light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara on April 18th of this month, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) says he wants to return to the ring in two to three months to fight the likes of Martin Murray or Matthew Macklin.

Chavez Jr, 29, thinks that either of those guys would be good opponents for him. If Chavez Jr. fights either of those guys, he’d be reverting back to fight smaller middleweights again like he’s been doing for the past few years. Chavez Jr. moved up in weight to super middleweight because he could no longer melt down to 160 to fight in the middleweight division.

Martin Murray wants Golovkin rematch at super middleweight

golovkin42222By Scott Gilfoid: After coming up short last month in getting stopped in the 11th round in his fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) on February 21st, #4 WBC Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) says he’d like to get another shot at fighting Golovkin, but this time super middleweight.

Murray, 32, believes it would be a different fight if he were to take the 5’10 ½” Golovkin at 168, presumably because he wouldn’t have to struggle to take the weight off like he did in cutting down to 160.

Murray has had three shots at world titles in the middleweight division, he’s failed to win a world title. He still believes he has opportunities in this fight class, but he thinks he would have a lot of chances at 168 as well if he were to move up. Murray seems torn about whether he should move up or not.

Martin Murray likely to move up to 168

1-IMG_7647By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC middleweight contender Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) is kicking around the idea of moving up to super middleweight to try and campaign in that weight class. Murray, who is huge for the 160 pound weight class, wants to see if he can rejuvenate his career following his 11th round knockout loss last month to WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on February 21st in Monte Carlo.

Let’s put it this way; it wasn’t a good performance from Murray. He ran and clinched pretty much the entire fight, and was purely in the survival mode right up to the point where referee Luis Pabon pulled the plug on him in the 11th round after he took some vicious head shots while stuck up against the ropes by Golovkin.

Golovkin-Murray averages 862K viewers on HBO for afternoon show

1-02By Scott Gilfoid: Last Saturday’s clash between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) and Britain’s Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) brought in less than huge ratings on HBO Championship Boxing in their fight on February 21st at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The Golovkin-Murray fight brought in an average of 862,000 viewers on HBO with a peak of 938,000. The numbers obviously weren’t huge, although the fight being broadcast during the afternoon rather than the evening probably has a lot to do with the less than huge ratings.
