Warrington-Brunker, Murray-Torres & Bellew-Kulikauskis tonight in Leeds

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten No.8 IBF featherweight contender Josh Warrington (21-0, 4 KOs) will be putting his WBC International and Commonwealth featherweight straps on the line tonight against No.9 IBF Joel Brunker (28-1, 16 KOs) in a 12 round bout at the First Direct Arena, Leeds, UK.

It’s a match pitting the light hitting 24-year-old Warrington against a slightly better puncher in 29-year-old Brunker from Australia. While the fight is not that big of a deal, the outcome of the fight is an important one for Warrington because if he wins and looks good, he could get a world title shot against IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby.

Diego Chaves: I will be making history if I defeat an Englishman in his own country

chaves33333By Scott Gilfoid: #4 IBF Diego Chaves (23-2-1, 19 KOs) says he wants to make history when he faces undefeated and untested IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) on October 24th at the Sheffield Arena, Sheffield, UK. Chaves sees himself making history by being an Argentinean and coming into England an beating and English fighter in front of his own fans.

Chaves had better be looking to score a knockout because he is the visiting fighter, and he’s coming into Brook’s home turf. We saw how Brook won a controversial 12 round majority decision over American Carson Jones three years ago in 2012 in Sheffield.

All roads lead to Martin Murray and Arthur Abraham

murray6666By Michael Muncaster: Martin Murray could become a real contender in the super-middleweight division on Saturday night, and WBO champion Arthur Abraham is surely in his sights.

The St Helens fighter (31-2-1-KO14) takes on Jose Miguel Torres (31-6-KO27) at the Leeds Arena.

Murray knows by becoming only the second fighter to stop the Colombian, it could launch him into world title contention.

Martin Murray wants Arthur Abraham title shot

Image: Martin Murray wants Arthur Abraham title shotBy Scott Gilfoid: Bottom ranked #15 WBO fringe contender Martin Murray (31-2-1, 14 KOs) is targeting WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham for a world title shot rather than the other 168lb champions Andre Ward, Badou Jack, and James DeGale. It’s kind of not all that surprising given that the 35-year-old Abraham is seen as the weak link among the four super middleweight champions in the minds of a lot of boxing fans.

Murray has a fight this Saturday night against middleweight Jose Miguel Torres (31-6, 27 KOs) in another tune-up fight. Don’t ask me why the 32-year-old Murray is fighting a middleweight, when Murray already moved up in weight after getting stopped in the 11th round last February by IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Martin Murray faces Jose Miguel Torres on September 5th in Leeds

murray3By Scott Gilfoid: In yet another tune-up fight for former three time world title challenger Martin Murray (31-2-1, 2, 14 KOs) will be facing 36-year-old middleweight journeyman Jose Miguel Torres (31-6, 27 KOs) on September 5th on the undercard of the featherweight contest between Josh Warrington and Joel Brunker at the Direct Arena in Leeds. It’s a nice little mismatch between Murray and Torres and it won’t help Murray one bit to get ready for the talented fighters in the super middleweight division.

#10 WBC, #15 WBO Murray will be dragging the short 5’8”Torres up from the 160lb division to fight at 168. Just why Murray needs to fight a middleweight journeyman at super middleweight is anyone’s guess. You would think that Murray would stick it out in fighting super middleweights after moving up to the division in June of this year after getting carried to the 11th and knocked out by IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin last February.

Martin Murray vs. Arthur Abraham possible in 2015

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn dropped a hint today that his fighter #15 WBO Martin Murray (31-2-1, 14 KOs) could be getting a world title shot against WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) in 2015.

If this turns to be true, Murray will have fought for world titles on four separate occasions in the past four years. That’s pretty incredible given that Murray has met with failure in each occasion and he keeps getting more chances.

When asked on twitter earlier today if the 32-year-old Murray will be getting a world title shot against Abraham in 2016, Hearn said “2015 even better.”

Weights: Quigg-Martinez, Perez-Crolla & Murray-Bajretarevic

crolla2(Photo credit: Thompson Boxing) By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated WBA “regular” super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) made weight on Friday for his title defense against #11 WBA fringe contender Kiko Martinez (32-5, 24 KOs) for their fight this Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Quigg weighed in at 121.75lbs. His opponent came in at 121.6. It’s difficult to get really excited about the Quigg-Martinez match-up because Martinez has beaten twice by Carl Frampton. I’m not sure what the purpose was in Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hear matching him against an opponent who has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights in Martinez, but whatever the case it’s not interesting.

Martin Murray faces Mirzet Bajrektarevic this Saturday, July 18th in Manchester

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: #11 WBC super middleweight contender Martin Murray (30-2-1, 13 KOs) will be fighting under the watchful guidance of Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn this Saturday night on July 18th in a scheduled 8 round bout against little known 35-year-old Croation fighter Mirzet Bajrektarevic (14-3, 8 KOs) on the undercard of the Scott Quigg vs. Kiko Martinez fight at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Bajrektarevic is a light heavyweight southpaw who has previously beaten soundly beaten by the likes of Gabriel Campillo, Enrico Koelling and Stefano Abatangelo. Bajrektarevic has won his last three fights against atrocious opposition with records like 6-21, 9-40 and 9-9. We’re talking about a fighter who hasn’t exactly been facing the cream of the crop in the 175lb division lately.

murray3By Scott Gilfoid: Former three time world title challenger Martin Murray (30-2-1, 13 KOs) will be back inside the ring next month against an opponent still to be determined on July 18th on the undercard of the title clash between WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg vs. former IBF 122lb champ Kiko Martinez at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Unbeaten #2 WBC heavyweight contender Anthony Joshua has been pulled off the July 18th card and will be inserted on the September 12th Kell Brook vs. Brandon Rios card at the O2 Arena in London, UK. There’s no word about who Joshua will be fighting on that date.
