Dillian Whyte vs. Mariusz Wach on June 3

By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte (20-1, 15 KOs) will be headlining his own card on June 3 against #7 WBC Mariusz Wach (33-2, 17 KOs) in a fight that will be televised live on Sky Sports from the O2 Arena in London, England. This is the so-called big fight that Whyte was talking about recently. I guess it’s one of those subjective things. I’m not sure if Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn had someone else in mind that he was trying to get for him to fight on June 3. Surely, Wach can’t be the big name that Hearn was trying to get for him to fight on June 3.

Mariusz Wach decisions Marcelo Luiz Nascimento

wach6By Jim Dower: In a fight a lot tougher than expected, former heavyweight world title challenger Mariusz Wach (32-2, 17 KOs) had to struggle hard to defeat 35-year-old journeyman Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (22-13, 19 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Hala Azoty, in Kedzierzyn Kozle, Poland.

The 36-year-old Wach was a little bit better than Nascimento in every round. Wach mostly just jabbed and plodded forward looking to load up on slow right hands. Nascimento was able to get out of the way of most of Wach’s slow right hands. Howecver, Wach started to find his mark more often starting in the 4th round. Nascimento made it each for Wach by backing up to the ropes, where he was a sitting duck.

Povetkin stops Wach, but fails to impress

povetkin100By Allan Fox: WBC Silver heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) retained his title tonight in stopping the over-matched former world title challenger Mariusz Wach (31-2, 17 KOs) in a cut stoppage on Wednesday night at the Basket-Hall Arena, in Kazan, Russia. The fight was halted in the 12th due to a cut under the left eye of the 35-year-old Wach. The Polish fighter wasn’t hurt other than a cut.

Povetkin suffered a bad cut over his left eye earlier in the fight. The cut obviously means that Povetkin won’t be ready to challenge WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in January.

Overall, it wasn’t an impressive performance for the 36-year-old Povetkin, because he couldn’t do much with what in practical purposes was a punching bag in front of him in the slow, lumbering Wach.

Povetkin, 36, kept his WBC Silver heavyweight title with the win. The fight was stopped in the 12th by the advice of the ringside doctor, who determined that Wach’s cut over his left eye was too severe for the fight to be allowed to continue.

Alexander Povetkin vs. Mariusz Wach this Wednesday

Anthony Joshua to fight on September 12th, Mariusz Wach a possibility

joshua9913By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC heavyweight contender Anthony Joshua (13-0, 13 KOs) has been yanked off the July 18th card in in order to put him on a card with greater visibility on September 12th on the Kell Brook card at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

The opponent that is being talked about for Joshua is 6’8” former world title challenger Mariusz Wach (31-1, 17 KOs). If the Joshua-Wach fight gets made, it’ll be a step up for Joshua, who has been fighting guys like Kevin Johnson, Jason Gavern and Rafael Love lately.

Wach clearly better than those guys, but not by much. We’re still taking about a flawed fighter with major problems with his game.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport has been complaining that it’s hard to find guys that will give the 6’6” Joshua rounds. He says his opposition is folding too easily, and he wants to find guys that can give him some badly needed work. He says that they are asking for more and more money to fight the 26-year-old, which would make sense given that they’re facing the 2012 Olympic super middleweight gold medalist.

Anthony Joshua vs. Mariusz Wach possible for September 12th

wach67By Scott Gilfoid: There’s a possibility that undefeated British heavyweight Anthony Joshua (13-0, 13 KOs) could be taking a step up against former world title challenger Mariusz Wach (30-1, 16 KOs) on September 12th in the UK, according to Fight News. It’s still not confirmed that the fight will take place, but there’s agreement between the promoters.

The 6’8” Wach would give the 6’6” Joshua a decent test to get him ready for what he will be facing when/if he gets inside the ring with the talented 6’7” WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) in 2016.
