Malignaggi: I haven’t been hit this hard since I fought Cotto

Image: Malignaggi: I haven't been hit this hard since I fought CottoBy Eric Thomas: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) seemed pretty upset at the post-fight press conference last night after having to struggle to defeat 23-year-old #10 WBA Pablo Cesar Cano (25-2-1, 19 KO’s) by a 12 round split decision at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York. Malignaggi insisted repeatedly that the fight wasn’t close, but he was impressed with Cano’s power. Malignaggi said “I haven’t been hit this hard since I fought Miguel Cotto.”

That was pretty much the end of the compliments from Malignaggi, because he spent most of the rest of the time talking about how he thought Cano didn’t even try to make weight after a certain period of time. Malignaggi said Cano and his people were just looking to get the win over him, and not worrying about winning the title. Cano came in over the limit by 1.4 pounds during the weigh-in. He attempted to take off the weight but still came in three quarts of a pound over the limit.

Malignaggi not interested in Cano rematch, wants Hatton next

Image: Malignaggi not interested in Cano rematch, wants Hatton nextBy William Mackay: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) won a controversial 12 round decision over interim WBA welterweight champion Pablo Cesar Cano (25-2-1, 19 KO’s) in a fight that many people felt Cano should have won. However, rather than giving Cano a rematch to quiet his critics and prove that he’s better than him, Malignaggi instead is taking the win as of it were a conclusive victory and will be moving on to try and get a fight against Ricky Hatton in early next year.

Malignaggi was knocked down in the 11th round by Cano, and took a lot of hard power shots from the young 23-year-old fighter. Malignaggi did little more than jab and jiggle his upper body in a strange way, as if trying to fake Cano out. It wasn’t working because he wasn’t concerned about Malignaggi’s jabs or his power shots. The only thing that was holding Cano back was his lack of hand speed in comparison to Malignaggi and his poor timing on his shots. Cano missed a lot of his power shots, and that probably kept him from knocking Malignaggi out because he was there to be stopped if Cano had been able to land enough of his big shots.

Maidana hoping Malignaggi will fight him in 2013

Image: Maidana hoping Malignaggi will fight him in 2013By Eric Thomas: WBA Inter-Continental welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (32-3, 29 KO’s) is hopeful that he can get a shot against WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) next year before someone beats Malignaggi and relieves him of his World Boxing Association 147 pound title.

Maidana said on his twitter page “Congrats to @paulmalignaggi. He had tough fight 2night but won IMO. Hopefully we meet in the ring next year because I want his belt.

Malignaggi defeats Cano by split decision

Image: Malignaggi defeats Cano by split decisionBy Jim Dower: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) edged 23-year-old challenger Pablo Cesar Cano (25-2-1, 19 KO’s) by a 12 round split decision in a non-title fight on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The final judges scores were 118-109 for Cano, and 114-113 and 114-113 for the 31-year-old Malignaggi. In the 11th round, Malignaggi was dropped by a big right hand from Cano. Luckily for Malignaggi the knockdown came near the end of the round. Cano mostly dominated the 12th round.

This was a difficult fight to score because Malignaggi threw mostly jabs compared to Cano’s power shots and the power punches that Malignaggi did throw in the fight were more like jabs due to the lack of power on them.

Cano can’t win title from Malignaggi after missing weight

Image: Cano can't win title from Malignaggi after missing weight(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Sean McDaniel: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (31-4, 7 KO’s) won’t have to worry about losing his title to 23-year-old Pablo Cesar Cano (25-1-1, 19 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Cano failed to make weight during Friday’s weigh-in when he came in at 148.4 lbs, 1.4 lbs over the 147 pound limit for his first attempt at making weight.

Cano then came back two hours later and weighed in at 147.8. This was kind of surprising because Cano has been fighting at 140 until until this fight, and the last person you’d think would miss on the weight in this card was the 23-year-old Cano. That doesn’t mean that Malignaggi can’t lose his title if he loses the fight. If Cano beats him, Malignaggi’s World Boxing Association title will go vacant for some of the other welterweight contenders to fight over.

Weigh-in: Garcia vs. Morales II, Malignaggi vs. Cano, Quillin vs. N’Dam, Bailey vs. Alexander

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia easily made weight at 139.2 lbs on Friday during his weigh-in for his bout on Showtime this Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The big surprise during the weigh-in was that Erik Morales was able to make weight at 139.8 pounds. This must have been a load of relief for Morales and his team, because he failed to make weight last March when he fought Garcia in Houston and lost his WBC title on the scales.

Quillin-N’Dam & Malignaggi-Cano on Garcia vs. Morales II undercard on Saturday

Image: Quillin-N'Dam & Malignaggi-Cano on Garcia vs. Morales II undercard on Saturday(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Jason Kim: Unbeaten middleweight contender Peter Quillin (27-0, 20 KO’s) will be facing WBO middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (27-0, 17 KO’s) and WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi 31-4, 7 KO’s) will be defending his title against #10 WBA Pablo Cesar Cano (25-1-1, 19 KO’s) on the Erik Morales vs. Danny Garcia II fight card on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight will be televised by Showtime in the United States.

This will be a good chance to see what the 29-year-old Quillin is all about because he’s been matched pretty carefully most of his seven year pro career and hasn’t faced anyone that you could really call a good fighter. He’s good power, but he’s been matched with care, keeping him away from the biggest threats in the division.

Malignaggi is being put in with Cano in order to give Malignaggi at least one winnable fight as the World Boxing Association champion before he’s forced to fight someone good that can actually beat him.

Malignaggi with tons of pressure in Cano fight; loss means no Hatton

Image: Malignaggi with tons of pressure in Cano fight; loss means no HattonBy William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions has set WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (31-4, 7 KO’s) up with what appears to be a nice easy fight against light welterweight Pablo Cesar Cano (25-1-1, 19 KO’s) on October 20th this month at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York.

Cano, 23, has limited experience against quality opposition apart from his 10th round stoppage loss to a past his best Erik Morales last year in September. Malignaggi should be able to beat this guy without any problems. However, there’s now the added pressure put on Malignaggi to make sure nothing goes wrong because if Malignaggi is beaten by Cano, which is definitely a possibility given Malignaggi’s complete lack of power, then Malignaggi can kiss goodbye his potential title defense against Ricky Hatton in 2013.

Cano will give Malignaggi a tough fight if his skin holds up

Image: Cano will give Malignaggi a tough fight if his skin holds upBy Allan Fox: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (31-4, 7 KO’s) will be defending his title against a light welterweight instead of a welterweight in facing 22-year-old Pablo Cesar Cano (25-1-1, 19 KO’s) on October 20th at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York. Cano is moving up in weight to take the fight, but it’s no a big deal because Malignaggi isn’t really a welterweight anyway.

Malignaggi’s a light hitting light welterweight that moved up in weight to look for paydays. Malignaggi, 31, fought three weak 2nd tier welterweights before landing a shot against the WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko last April.
