Lucas Browne likely to face Fres Oquendo next

browne600By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I hope newly crowned WBA heavyweight campion Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) enjoys his reign as the WBA champion after his 10th round knockout win over Ruslan Chagaev (34-3-1, 21 KOs) last Saturday night at the Colosseum Sport Hall in Grozny, Chechnya, Russia.

It’s looking like Browne will need to defend his title next against 42-year-old Fres Oquendo (37-8, 24 KOs) next unless Browne can get a unification lined up against one of the other heavyweight champions. From what I hear, Oquendo is the mandatory challenger for Browne’s WBA title right now, and it doesn’t look like there’s any way around that fight for the 36-year-old Browne unless he can get a unification clash against one of the other champions like WBC champ Deontay Wilder.

Lucas Browne stops Ruslan Chagaev, wins WBA title

chagaev4By Scott Gilfoid: In a huge upset win, Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) scored a tremendous 10th round stoppage win over WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (34-3-1, 21 KOs) to capture the WBA title on Saturday night at the Colosseum Sport Hall, in Grozny, Russia.

Browne caught Chagaev with a big right hand in the 10th to put him on the canvas. After a badly hurt Chagaev got back to his feet, Browne flurried on him until the fight was halted by referee Stanley Christodoulou. Chagaev was still on his feet, but he was finished. The crowd didn’t like the stoppage, but if the fight wasn’t halted, we would have seen Chagaev on the canvas in short order.
