By Jim Dower: Heavyweight contender Kevin Johnson (22-1-1, 9 KO’s) partly explains the reason for his lopsided 12 round unanimous decision loss to World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last December, saying that he was injured in the 2nd round of the fight and that affected him for the remainder of the bout. Johnson, now looking for his next opponent, would like to fight WBA heavyweight champion David Haye next.
Klitschko vs. Johnson
Klitschko-Johnson: What happened to Kevin?
By Jim Slattengren: To listen to previously unbeaten heavyweight contender Kevin Johnson (22-1-1, 9 KO’s) speak before Saturday night’s fight, you would think that Johnson was going to rip World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko’s head clean off his shoulders. At least you would have thought that Johnson, 30 was going to make a game effort of it by going out on his shield by trying to take Vitali out with some meaningful punches.
How would Wladimir Klitschko have done against Kevin Johnson?
By Sean McDaniel: After last Saturday night’s fight between World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and challenger Kevin Johnson, Wladimir Klitschko, the younger brother of Vitali, attempted to go over and separate Johnson and Vitali, both of whom were standing and looking as if they might continue to trade after the bell. However, no sooner had Wladimir put his hands on Johnson’s back, Kevin whirled around and pushed Wladimir. It looked for a second like Johnson might throw a roundhouse right at Wladimir.
Klitschko defeats Johnson
Photo credit: Sumio Yamada – By Eric Thomas: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko defeated challenger Kevin Johnson by a lopsided 12 round decision tonight in Bern, Switzerland. Johnson, 30, never was very competitive as he threw nothing but jabs all night long. By the 8th, Johnson began to tire out and absorb punishment on the ropes and mainly just cover up and try to spoil. The final judges’ scores were 119-109, 120 and 120-108.
Boxing results from Switzerland: Klitschko, Banks, Ustinov, Seferi win
Klitschko-Johnson prediction: Look for Vitali’s face to get mangled
By Dave Lahr: With the bout between World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (38-2, 37 KO’s) and challenger Kevin Johnson (22-0-1, 9 KO’s) at the PostFinance Arena, in Berne, Switzerland, I think we’re about to see the 38-year-old Vitali get old tonight and lose. It’s bound to happen sooner or later, because Vitali is starting to look old and gray on top.
Haye: “It’s unlikely that I’ll even watch it” [the Klitschko-Johnson fight]
By Scott Gilfoid: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye sounds a little jealous of the attention surrounding World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko’s bout against Kevin Johnson on Saturday, saying to the Daily Telegraph “It’s one of the weakest fights of recent times. It’s unlikely that I’ll even watch it.” It might be bout that could turn out to be a huge mismatch, but my guess is Haye will be sitting and watching the fight with great interest tomorrow night.
Weights from Switzerland: Klitschko 246.9, Johnson 242.5 – News
By Chris Williams: In one of the rare fights in which an opponent of the Klitschko brothers weighs nearly as much as them, unbeaten Kevin Johnson (22-0-1, 9 KO’s) weighed in at 242.5 for tomorrow night’s bout against World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (38-2, 37 KO’s) at the PostFinance Arena, in Bern, Switzerland.
Klitschko-Johnson: Will Vitali show his age this Saturday?
By Dave Lahr: World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Kitschko (38-2, 37 KO’s) will be returning to action this Saturday night in a title defense against unbeaten American Kevin Johnson (22-0-1, 9 KO’s) at the PostFinance Arena, in Berne, Switzerland. It’s only been three months since the 38-year-old Klitschko last fought and with that kind of short time between bouts, Klitschko could find himself at less than 100% against Johnson. Klitschko is getting up there in age at 38 and has a history of suffering bad injuries both in the ring and in training.
Klitschko-Johnson: Tough one to call
By Peter Wells: Vital Klitschko 38-2(37) defends his WBC Heavyweight title for the 3rd time since his return to the ring, against Kevin Johnson 22-0-1(9). The American has a big task ahead of him and this will be his first big test. He may be 30 but hit his peak in his last fight earlier in May by knocking out also unbeaten Devin Vargas. Until then he hadn’t took anyone on of any note, and will need a big performance in Switzerland on 12th December. He’s never been in a 12 rounder although has gone the full 10 rounds 5 times in his career, and hasn’t been known as much of a puncher.
