Khan numbers are impressive despite competing card

khan8By Phil Smith: The numbers are in and it’s all good news for Amir Khan. His showdown with Devon Alexander averaged  762k viewers on Showtime with a peak at 887k. Across town, at the Cosmopolitan, the Bradley did averaged 966k with a peak at 1M viewers. How is that good news for Khan?

HBO has several millions subscribers more than Showtime and yet, the difference between the two cards in terms of viewers was 125k. That means that a higher percentage of Showtime subscribers were interested in watching Khan as opposed to a lower percentage of HBO subscribers tuning in for the Bradley fight. If it was reversed, Khan would have probably averaged 1.5M on HBO.

Khan-Alexander averages 762K viewers on Showtime

khan774By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan has even less ammunition to get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr now that Nielson has released his ratings for his fight last Saturday night against Devon Alexander on Showtime.

According to Dan Rafael the Khan-Alexander fight averaged 762,000 viewers with a peak of 887,000. These obviously aren’t good numbers, and they’re definitely not the kind of numbers that Khan can brag about in saying that the boxing public in the U.S can’t get enough of him.

With those kinds of numbers, it looks like the boxing public blew town last Saturday or else they were too busy watching the dueling telecast on HBO between Timothy Bradley and Diego Chaves.

Khan has more chance against Mayweather than he does against Brook

khan777By Chris McCarthy: On Saturday we saw Amir Khan back to his brilliant best, completely shutting out Devon Alexander over 12 rounds, throwing with his incredible speed and accuracy. Alexander was beaten from the first round and knew it.

The trouble with this is Alexander is not a puncher. He is a counter puncher who wasn’t given the chance to dictate the fight. Khan will always beat these fighters. What he should avoid like the plague is one punch knockout artists like the Danny Garcias and Keith Thurmans of this world. While Brook isn’t quite as ferocious as those two, he does have the power to put Khan away.

For all his great attributes, Mayweather lacks the power to destroy opponents within the 12 round distance. We have to go back 9 fights to when Mayweather last knocked anyone out, and that was Ricky Hatton, who by that point was running around the ring like a headless chicken and a knockout was inevitable. Please note that I do not count the Victor Ortiz knockout as genuine as I felt Ortiz was doing what he could to get out of the fight.

After his defeat against Danny Garcia and the poor performance in his tuning bout against Julio Diaz, it looked like Khan career could have been at its end.

Many were expecting him to lose against the solidity of Luis Collazo but in that occasion Khan displayed all his class, controlling his opponent for 12 round and winning convincingly an UD.

He did not take any risk, clinching his contender every time he needed to do it and for this reason he was criticized by some critics and fans.

Amir Khan vs Devon AlexanderBy Scott Gilfoid: Fighting in a purely defensive manner for pretty much the entire fight, Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) defeated former two division world champion Devon Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judges’ scores were 119-109, 118-110 and 120-107.

Khan constantly backed away each time Alexander would initiate any kind of offense, which made the fight very difficult to watch.

“I’m the best boxer with the quickest hands in the sport,” Khan said after the fight. “I have the best jab in the business.”

Thurman looks poor against Bundu

Keith Thurman vs Leonard BunduBy Jim Dower: Interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (24-0, 21 KOs) looked poor tonight in beating 40-year-old European level contender Leonard Bundu (31-1-2, 11 KOs) by one-sided 12 round unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The crowd booed Thurman’s running from rounds 4 through 12. Thurman treated the light hitting Bundu like he was a knockout artist instead of a light hitting contender.

The judges scored the fight 120-107, 120-107 and 120-107.

Alexander: A lot of UK fans want me to beat Khan

This is kind of a surprise to some fans of the sport, because Khan is seen as someone with a large fan base in the UK. It’s news that there are people from the UK who are actually rooting against him rather than for him.

The fight will be televised on Showtime. Khan will likely receive additional money from the UK as part of the fight being televised on Sky. Alexander will be receiving $500,000 as the B-side in that fight.

In what’s really surprising is that former WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (31-1, 12 KOs) will be receiving $2 million purse for his fight against Diego Chaves (23-2, 19 KOs) on HBO on the same night at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
