Bellew vs. Chilemba tonight: Tony in a must win situation

bellew44By Scott Gilfoid: If you got a chance to see WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) at the weigh-in on Friday for his fight tonight against #3 WBC challenger Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK, you have noticed how stressed out and agitated the 30-year-old Bellew looked.

Bellew looked genuinely worried, almost like someone about to give a speech for the first time without having practiced what they’re going to say. Bellew looked so nervous yesterday that it was hard to predict what the guy would do.

In reading Bellew’s physical affect, one got the sense that if he could magically teleport himself out of the situation he would have.

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver light heavyweight title holder Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) made weight on Friday for his title defense against #3 WBC Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) for their fight tomorrow night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Bellew, 30, came in at 174 pounds. Chilemba weighed in at one pound less at 173. Chilemba looked like the stouter fighter of the two. Bellew looks painfully thin at 174, and needs to put some weight on.

Bellew: I’m willing to die in the ring against Chilemba

Bellew Chilemba head to head[4](Photo credit: Wealth TV) By Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) defends his WBC strap on Saturday night against challenger Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) in Bellew’s home city of Liverpool at the Echo Arena. Bellew, 30, is seeing this fight in very serious terms and says he’s willing to put his life on the line in order to win the fight.

Bellew said to Sky Sports News “I’m willing to do anything, go to any level. Come Saturday night I’m willing to die in that ring, if so, be it. I’ll do anything to win and that’s the level it’s going…He can’t come to my city and expect to tap me and run away and get a 12-round decision win.”

Oh brother, I think Bellew needs to lighten up a little. He’s getting a little serious and he’s coming across kind of like a ham. Bellew is a little over the top right now. I know the guy wants to win and all, but god lighten up, man. This is a sport, not war.

Bellew: I’m going to smash Chilemba

bellew343By Scott Gilfoid: You can make a good argument that WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) is facing the best opponent of his six-year career on Saturday night against #3 WBC Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Bellew, 30, is the older fighter in this bout against the still young 25-year-old Chilemba, and he’s facing someone with a better work rate, better stamina, and clearly a better chin. Chilemba can take any kind of shot and keep coming, which is more than I can say about Bellew.

We’ve already see him down on the canvas in his first fight against Ovill McKenzie in December 2010.

Bellew-Chilema on Saturday, 3/30 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK

bellew34By Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) will be facing his toughest test in eons this Saturday night against Isaac Chilemba (20-1, 9 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Bellew hasn’t had a test since he was spanked by WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly in October of 2011. Bellew’s promoter has since put him on a soft diet that’s allowed him to win his last three fights against Danny McIntosh, Edison Miranda and Roberto Bolonti.

Those easy fights have enabled Bellew to get back on the winning track as he goes into this all important fight against the tough as nails Chilemba.

Bellew vs. Chilemba on 3/30, and Ajisafe on 5/25

bellew45by Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) has himself scheduled for two fights instead of just one. Bellew, 30, faces Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) this month on March 30th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK, and then win or lose, Bellew will return to the ring to face Bob Ajisafe (10-2, 3 KO’s) on May 25th on the undercard of the PPV fight between IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and WBA champion Mikkel Kessler at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

I can’t quite understand that fight because you’d think that Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn at Matchroom Sport at least would have found Bellew a halfway decent opponent given the divisibility of the fight card and all, but it looks like Hearn is scrimping with the undercard fights by putting his Matchroom stable fighters in mismatches against lesser opposition.

Bellew vs. Chilemba: Don’t be surprised if Tony tastes some canvas on March 30th

bellew45By Scott Gilfoid: You can shield a fighter from quality opponents with soft matchmaking for a while but sooner or later you’ve got to take on a good fighter and that’s where the problems come back and bite you in the backside.

Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) has received a nice #3 ranking by the World Boxing Council in the light heavyweight division after having beaten three consecutive easy opponents after beating dominated by WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly in a 12 round decision loss in October 2011.

Bellew vs. Chilemba on March 30th in Liverpool, England

chilemba545By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) will be meeting 25-year-old Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) on March 30th in a WBC light heavyweight title eliminator at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. The winner of the fight will become the mandatory challenger for WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson.

Bellew, 30, recently had a chance to fight WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly for his strap in October 2011, but Bellew ran out of gas in the last four rounds of the fight and gave it away. Bellew has since won his last three fights against Danny McIntosh, Edison Miranda and Roberto Bolonti.

Tony Bellew – How good is ‘The Bomber’?

bellew34By Michael Byrne: Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) is set to fight in Liverpool’s Echo Arena on March 30th. This man can certainly punch, and he’s also demonstrated a boxing brain. Bellew proved both of these things individually in his two outings with Ovil McKenzie a couple of years back. The first fight was an absolute slugfest, seeing Bellew dropped in the first two rounds by McKenzie’s vicious right hand, before he showed his own power to force a stoppage in the 8th. The rematch was a big surprise, as Bellew pumped out his jab for 12 rounds to show his ability to follow a game plan and not get caught up in a war (Amir Khan, take note!).

However, Bellew’s one loss came against the one world-class fighter he has faced. He leapt from fighting poor records on the domestic scene straight into a world title fight with unbeaten Welshman Nathan Cleverly.

Bellew vs. Chilemba possible for March 30th in Liverpool

bellew5434By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBC light heavyweight contender Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) could be on the verge of facing his first real quality opponent in #5 WBC Isaac Chilemba (30-1-1, 9 KO’s) on March 30th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Bellew, 30, is hoping to get a title shot against WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson in 2013, that’s not likely to happen because he’s not ranked high enough.

Bellew needs another big win or two to get him to the #1 mandatory position and it starts possibly with the talented 25-year-old Chilemba from Johannesburg, South Africa. Chilema is a tough fighter and I can’t see Bellew getting past this guy unless he’s able to score a knockout.
