By Jim Dower: Unbeaten World Boxing Council World bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka (26-0-2, 18 KOs) retained his WBC 118lb title on Friday night by stopping 31-year-old former WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (36-5-1, 12 KOs) in the 7th round at the Edion Arena in Osaka, Japan.

Yamanaka, 33, knocked the 31-year-old Moreno down four times in the fight before it was finally halted in the 7th round by referee Daniel Van de Wiele. The official time of the stoppage was at 1:09 of the 7th.

Santa Cruz obliterates Martinez; Ruiz destroys Ceja – results

santa cruz423By Dan Ambrose: WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (32-0-1, 18 KOs) did not look good in defeating former IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez (36-7, 26 KOs) by a 5th round knockout TKO on Saturday night in Santa Cruz’s first defense of his WBA 126lb title at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California, USA.

Santa Cruz dropped Martinez in the 1st round. Four rounds later, he finished him off with a blizzard of punches in the 5th round to get a stoppage. In between all this, the two fighters threw shots at close range in a phone booth type fight.

Nonito Donaire vs. Hugo Ruiz a possibility

donaireBy Chris Williams: Former four division world champion Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22 KOs) is reportedly in talks with #1 WBC Hugo Ruiz (35-2, 31 KOs) for a WBC super bantamweight title eliminator, according to Fight News. The winner of the Donaire-Ruiz fight could either be the WBC mandatory or could become the WBC 122lb champion if the current WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz moves up in weight to featherweight like he’s been talking about wanting to do.

If Santa Cruz moves up to 126, his WBC super bantamweight title would become vacant for Donaire and Ruiz to fight over. Donaire is ranked #3 WBC.
