Hughie Fury: I’ll beat Mike Tyson’s record to become the youngest heavyweight champion

fury640By Scott Gilfoid: 19-year-old heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (12-0, 7 KO’s) still believes that he’ll be breaking Mike Tyson’s record as the youngest heavyweight world champion of all-time. Mike Tyson was only 20 1/2 when he first captured a world title when he stopped WBC heavyweight champion Trevor Berbeck in the 2nd round back in 1986. Hughie just turned 19 last September.

What this means is that if the 6’6″ Hughie is to have any chance of breaking the record, he’ll need to fight for a world title by next year or early 2015. If he fails to do then Hughie won’t be breaking the record.

Hughie Fury’s trainer pleased with his progress

hughie53By Scott Gilfoid: Peter Fury, the trainer and father of unbeaten British heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (12-0, 7 KO’s), feels that the 6’6″ fighter is moving along nicely with the direction his still young career is going in. The 19-year-old Hughie fought 12 times in 2013, albeit against weak 3rd tier opposition for the most part.

Peter is trying to develop Hughie into a future world champion, and he wants to push him quickly with a lot of fights for him to learn from. Unlike heavyweights like Anthony Joshua, Hughie hasn’t had much of an amateur, so he’s getting on the job training if you will.

Peter said to Hennessy Sports “It’s worked exactly to plan giving him as many fights as possible in this space of time – it’s done him nothing but good. He’s now fighting clever, while before he felt like mixing it up and taking opponents out, he’s now pacing himself and he’s trying different things in there.

Hughie Fury to fight next on February 8th

fury67307 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (12-0, 7 KO’s) will be held out of the ring for the next three months to heal the deep cut that he sustained over his eye during training for his fight agaisnt David Gegeshidze last week. The cut reopened during the the fight after Hughie got nailed by a hard right hand from Gegeshidze. Hughie got he victory by a 4th round stoppage, but having the cut reopened was definitely a negative for the 6’6″ fighter.

As such, his fights that Hughie scheduled for December have been canceled and instead he’ll be fighting next on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs. David Haye against a still to be determined opponent on February 8th at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, UK. It would be nice to see Hughie not matched against a stiff, but I guess that’s going to be pretty much what we’ll be seeing for the 19-year-old unfortunately.

Hughie Fury vs. Danny Hughes on December 14th for WBC junior strap

Fury, 19, was supposed to be fighting Hughes on November 16t for the WBC strap, but unfortunately Hughie suffered a cut over his left eye last night in defeating David Gegeshidze (10-5-2, 2 KO’s) by a 4th round TKO at the City Academy Sports Centre, Bristol, Avon, United Kingdom.

Hughie Fury stops David Gegeshidze in 4th round TKO

hughie53By Scott Gilfoid: Hughie Fury (12-0, 7 KO’s) picked up his 7th stoppage of his still young career with a harder than expected 4th round TKO win over 32-year-old David Gegeshidze (10-5-1, 2 KO’s) at the City Academy Sports Centre in Bristol, UK. The fight was stopped after Hughie hit the badly out of shape Gegeshidze with several clubbing right hands to the head in the 4th. The referee stepped in and waived it off rather than letting Hughie try to finish the pot-bellied Gegeshidze.

Hughie had suffered a cut over his left eye in the 4th round when he leaned into a right hand from Gegeshidze and got nailed right on the eye. As far as the knockout goes, it was more of a product of Gegeshidze being totally gassed out than him being hurt from any of Hughie’s shots because he didn’t show any power at in the fight, and Gegeshidze had no problems taking his best shots.

Hughie Fury faces David Gegeshidze tonight

fury564534By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (11-0, 6 KO’s) continues with his improbable chase of Mike Tyson’s heavyweight record for the youngest heavyweight champion in facing little known David Gegeshidze (10-4-1, 2 KO’s) at the City Academy Sports Centre, Bristol, Avon, United Kingdom. This isn’t much of a step up for young Hughie from his last two fights against Dorian Darch and Hrvoje Kisicek.

About the only thing that you can see as a positive in this fight is that the 32-year-old Gegeshidze at least has a winning record, which is more than you can say about a lot of Hughie’s past opponents. However, Gegeshidze’s victories have come against opposition with absolutely terrible records, so you pretty much have to throw out all 10 of Gegeshidze’s past wins and see him as an 0-4-1 fighter.

Hughie Fury faces David Gegeshidze this Friday

fury333By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (11-0, 6 KO’s) will be taking another incredibly small step forward with his career this Friday night as he continues to chase Mike Tyson’s record to try and become the youngest heavyweight title holder ever when he faces David Gegeshidze (10-4-1, 2 KO’s) in a scheduled 6 round bout at the City Academy Sports Centre, Bristol, Avon, United Kingdom. I’m starting to worry that the 19-year-od Fury won’t be able to break Tyson’s record because Tyson was 20-years-old when he beat WBC heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick in 1986 to capture the WBC title.

If you look at the kinds of opposition that the 6’6″ Hughie is fighting now, I just don’t see him being able to make the leap from facing the likes of the 32-year-old Gegeshidze and Hrvoje Kisicek (5-6, 1 KO’s) to suddenly fighting for and capturing a world title within a year. I mean, maybe I’m not seeing something here in terms of the match-making.

Hughie Fury vs. David Gegeshidze on November 8th

fury5656By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight Hughie Fury (11-0, 6 KO’s) will be back in the ring next month against 32-year-old David Gegeshidze (10-4-1, 2 KO’s) on November 8th in a scheduled 6th round bout at the City Academy Sports Centre, Bristol, Avon, UK.

Gegeshidze’s resume is deceiving to say the least. You look at it and assume that Hughie’s getting a good opponent, but once you realize that Gegeshidze’s wins have come against against entirely mediocre opposition, then you have to throw out every win he has and seem him as a 0-0 novice because there’s no on his resume that is recognizable. For example, Gegeshidze’s last three wins have come against Nodar Khanishvili (4-16, 1 KO’s), Zurab Shatakishvili (6-12, 2 KO’s), and Imeda Sibashvili (2-9).

Hughie won by a 60-54 score by referee Shaun Messer 54-60. What was extremely disappointing about Hughie’s performance was that he couldn’t stop Kisicek.

Hughie Fury vs. Hrvoje Kisicek today

fury433By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (10-0, 6 KO’s) continues with his chase today of Mike Tyson’s record for being the youngest heavyweight champion to ever win a world strap. Fury, 19, will be facing little known Croatian fighter Hrvoje Kisicek (4-5, 1 KO’s) in a scheduled 6 round bout at the Hermitage Leisure Centre, Whitwick, Leicestershire, United Kingdom.

Mike Tyson was just 20-years-old when he first captured a world heavyweight title in beating Trevor Berbick in 1986. For the 19-year-old Hughie to eclipse that record, he’s going to have to push his promoter to start putting him in with live bodies because the guys they’ve been carting out for him to fight aren’t going to get young Hughie a title shot. I mean, this isn’t like a Rocky movie where Apollo Creed looks for un-ranked Rocky Balboa to give him a title shot just for the heck of it.
