Kovalev stayed composed when he couldn’t KO Hopkins, says trainer

kovalev5By Dan Ambrose: John David Jackson, the trainer for IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (26-0-1, 23 KOs), thinks one of the biggest reasons why Kovalev was able to beat the 49-year-old Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) in their recent fight on November 8th was due to Kovalev keeping his head and not getting frustrated easily when he was unable to score a knockout over Hopkins at some point in their fight.

Kovalev put Hopkins on the floor in the 1st round, and he also hurt him in the 12th. However, Hopkins did a good job of taking Kovalev’s best shots to continue fighting.

Bernard Hopkins vs. Sergey Kovalev this Saturday in Atlantic City, NJ

hopkins5By Dan Ambrose: IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) will be putting his two titles on the line this Saturday night, November 8th against WBO 175 pound champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

This is perhaps the final chance for the 49-year-old Hopkins to try and unify all the titles in the light heavyweight division, because he’s not young enough to stick around to try and come back from a loss to Kovalev to go after all the titles.

Kovalev: If Hopkins can’t do something legally, he starts acting

hopkins563By Dan Ambrose: WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) thinks that IBF/WBA champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) sometimes reverts to acting if things aren’t going well for him in his fights.

Kovalev specifically mentions Hopkins’ first fight against Chad Dawson in October 2011, a fight in which Hopkins complained that he suffered a shoulder injury in the 2nd round. The fight bout was then halted, and the fight was ultimately ruled as a no contest.

YouTube video
By Dan Ambrose: The conventional wisdom is that WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) is going to need to use a combination of boxing and slugging in order to defeat IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) on November 8th in order to beat the 49-year-old fighter in their match-up at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Pascal wants Kovalev to beat Hopkins

kovalev888By Jim Dower: #1 WBC Jean Pascal (29-2, 17 KOs) is hoping WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) will beat IBF/WBA 175 pound champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) in their unification fight in a little over a week from now on November 28th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Pascal thinks he’d have an easier chance at getting a fight against the 31-year-old Kovalev than he would if Hopkins were to come out on top, because Hopkins defeated Pascal by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision in their rematch in 2011. Pascal believes that if Hopkins beats Kovalev, he’ll then go in another direction rather than face him.

Hopkins doubts Kovalev knows how to crack the B-Hop code

hopkins8By Dan Ambrose: WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev’s trainer John David Jackson has been saying that Kovalev will prove that the 49-year-old Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) is an old man and will beat him with pressure when they get inside the ring on November 8th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Jackson has been teaching Kovalev things he learned from his own fight against Hopkins back in 1997 when Jackson was knocked out in the 7th round.

“John David Jackson definitely can’t fight for him. John David Jackson had his chance. John David Jackson got knocked out, I believe, in the ninth round,” Hopkins said. “So, to me how can a teacher teach a student and the teacher flunked the test too?”

Kovalev: I’m going to kick Hopkins’ backside

kovalev7731`By Dan Ambrose: WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) says he’s going to kick IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins’ backside on November 8th in their fight on HBO and then give his win over the 49-year-old Hopkins to his young son Alexander.

Kovalev is coming into the fight with no real battle plan other than going to war, and fighting as he’s always fought. He plans on attacking Hopkins and looking to hurt him. Kovalev will push the pace and try to KO the nearly 50-year-old Hopkins with every shot he throws.
