Image: Review of the year: A look at the good and bad of 2009 in boxing Part 2By Michael Taylor: August: At the beginning of August Devon Alexander was introduced to the big time with a victory over Junior Witter, retiring Witter for the vacant WBC Light Welterweight title. On the same show, Timothy Bradley and Nate Campbell’s WBO Light Welterweight clash ended in a no-contest, as a head butt caused a nasty cut over Nate’s left eye, and the fight was stopped. Could the Bernard Hopkins-Roy Jones Jr fight be more significant than first thought?

cal456343355By Liam Fitzgerald: Providing that they come through their respective fights next Wednesday unscathed, we will be witnessing a rematch between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr early in 2010. In no way am I downplaying any of Bernard’s accomplishments, or his ability as a fighter, because I know I certainly could not go 10 seconds with the man, as he would probably back me in, and fire the same shot that floored both Antonio Tarver, and Joe Calzaghe, and I would be out for a day or so. But as good as he is, or ever was, he simply does not have the athleticism to compete with a boxer of Roy’s caliber or boxing style.
