Hatton- Risk for Redemption

Image: Hatton- Risk for RedemptionBy Adam Hill: The Manchester Evening News Arena was filled with electric nostalgia and the booms of drums echoed throughout the stadium. Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton (45-2) didn’t look likely to ever return to the ring- well documented personal battles and terrifying memories of a night and a Filipino three years ago almost breaking his warrior spirit. After an exciting undercard the time had come to see whether Ricky Hatton was still a contender.

Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1), sporting a Manchester United shirt (Ricky being a fan of arch-rivals Manchester City), entered the ring intent on destroying the hopes of everyone at ringside.
Then, as if he had never left, the crowd erupted on reception of Hatton. Michael Buffer, unable to be heard over the roar of the Hitman faithful, struggled through the pre-fight proceedings before the bell rang and the two fighters began to circle. The bout was scheduled for 10 rounds.

Hatton v Senchenko: Fingers Crossed

Image: Hatton v Senchenko: Fingers CrossedBy Ed Hoyle: For the first time tonight since his brutal TKO loss at the hands of Manny Pacquaio, Ricky Hatton will be once again gracing the boxing ring. Since Hatton’s temporary retirement, other British stars have been gradually edging their way towards potential stardom; most notably, the undefeated Kell Brook and David Price. Scottish star, Ricky Burns has practically sealed his legacy, coming off an impressive TKO of England’s crafty Kevin Mitchell earlier this year.

However, there’s no denying the sport has been missing the Mancunian’s infectious charisma and entertaining style. The void that was left, when Hatton retired with a whimper has finally been refilled and after Friday’s weigh in, there’s curious optimism amongst the boxing public that he’s back for real.

Senchenko destroys Hatton; Quigg defeats Munroe; Murray and Rabchenko both win

Image: Senchenko destroys Hatton; Quigg defeats Munroe; Murray and Rabchenko both winBy William Mackay: Scott Quigg (24-0-1, 17 KO’s) dominated former European and Commonwealth super bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe (24-2-1, 10 KO’s) tonight in stopping him in the 6th round to capture the interim WBA World super bantamweight title on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko undercard at the Manchester Arena, Manchester, England.

Quigg, 24, knocked the 32-year-old Munroe down twice in the 6th round to get the stoppage. Quigg knocked Munroe down initially with a hard left to the body. Quigg then finished Munroe off with a hard right to the body that put Munroe down on one knee. The fight was then halted after Munroe couldn’t back to his feet.

Hatton: I’m going to roll back the years

Image: Hatton: I'm going to roll back the yearsBy Scott Gilfoid: Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) thinks he’s going to be the same Hatton he was many years ago when he steps inside the ring tonight against Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1, 21 KO’s) at the Manchester Arena in front of a throng of British fans showing up just to get a glimpse of their hero Hatton for the first time in many years. All I can say about that is don’t be surprised if Hatton gets knocked out cold again.

Hatton said to Sky Ringside “The main thing is what happens when I step inside the ring. Nothing is going to shake me. It’ll be the new Ricky Hatton. I really think I’m going to roll back the years.”

Malignaggi: Hatton has to beat Senchenko in a spectacular fashion

Image: Malignaggi: Hatton has to beat Senchenko in a spectacular fashionBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi is really hoping that Ricky Hatton looks spectacular on Saturday night in facing his recent knockout victim Vyacheslav Senchenko in the UK. Malignaggi insists that Hatton has to look great in beating Senchenko so that boxing fans won’t laugh up a storm when Hatton fights him immediately for a world title, and in doing so leap frogging all the top contenders that have worked so hard all these years hoping to get a title shot while Hatton has been in a 3 1/2 year retirement.

Yeah, boxing isn’t a fair sport, because the sanctioning should make sure that the guys that work hard to try and get title shots aren’t pushed aside so that more popular fighters like Hatton can get quick title shots off of one fight against a recently knockout fighter in Senchenko.

Malignaggi: Hatton will maul Senchenko in close and not let him rest

Image: Malignaggi: Hatton will maul Senchenko in close and not let him restBy Scott Gilfoid: Paulie Malignaggi sees Ricky Hatton’s inside pressur fighting being the undoing for Vyacheslav Senchenko tomorrow night. Malignaggi just finished beating Senchenko last April, and he doesn’t see anything there that will cause Hatton a lot of problems if Hatton sticks to his inside fighting game that he usually uses.

Malignaggi said on Sky Ringside “The pressure style [of Hatton], the mauling style has the potential to make Senchenko very uncomfortable. Senchenko likes to fight at a distance, but when you get in close to him there’s really not much he does. He likes to rest in the clinches and get a break, and you don’t get those kinds of breaks on the inside with Ricky Hatton. So if Ricky can close the distance it’s a win. Ricky’s going to want to get on the inside, and Senchenko is going to want to stay on the outside, so whoever imposes their style better.”

Haye: Hatton has something up his sleeve for Senchenko

Image: Haye: Hatton has something up his sleeve for SenchenkoBy Scott Gilfoid: David Haye thinks that Ricky Hatton has some kind of sly plan that he’s going to spring on Vyachseslav Senchenko tomorrow night when they get it on in the Manchester Arena in Hatton’s comeback fight. I don’t know why precisely Haye thinks it’s got to be some kind of trick from Hatton, because he’s always fought with the same head first, plodding style his entire career. Why would Hatton change now?

Haye said at hayemaker.com “I know you wouldn’t be coming back if it wasn’t for a reason. I think you have a little something left. You have a little something up your sleeve.”

Hagler comments on Hatton’s comeback efforts

Image: Hagler comments on Hatton's comeback effortsBy Scott Gilfoid: Boxing great Marvin Hagler doesn’t think fighters that are out of the sport for 2 or more years are the same when they do try and make a comeback attempt. Ricky Hatton is making a comeback on Saturday night against Vyacheslav Senchenko after being out of the ring for darn near 4 years. That’s a heck of a long time to be out of action, especially when you look all the fat that Hatton packed on during those lost years.

Hagler told the Telegraph.co.uk “I know when a fighter is out of the ring for more than two years, when he comes back he isn’t the same anymore…I can only wish good luck to Ricky Hatton after being away so long.”

Froch: I hope Hatton doesn’t get hurt against Senchenko

Image: Froch: I hope Hatton doesn't get hurt against SenchenkoBy Scott Gilfoid: Fellow Brit Carl Froch is hoping that Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) is successful with his comeback fight tomorrow night against Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1, 21 KO’s) and that Hatton doesn’t hurt again like he was in his last fight when he was planted on the canvas by Manny Pacquiao in 2009. Hatton was literally out cold after walking into a beautiful left hand from Pacquiao. The KO caused Hatton to retire from boxing from 2009 to his comeback fight tomorrow night at the Manchester Arena.

Froch said to the standard.co.uk “If Ricky wants to come back that’s his decision. Good luck to him. But let’s just hope he is in as good shape as he looks and that he doesn’t get hurt.”

Weigh-in: Hatton vs. Senchenko

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: Both Ricky Hatton and Vyacheslav Senchenko made weight today in Manchester, England for their fight tomorrow night. Both guys came in at an identical weight of 10st 6lb 10oz [ 146.5 pounds] for their fight on Saturday at the Manchester Arena.

The two fighters then came together for a long stare down, and it looked like Hatton was trying to intimidate the cool and calm Senchenko, who showed little emotion the entire time. Senchenko is a professional and he’s not bothered by intimidation tactics. He’s well beyond those types of tricks.
