Groves vs. Rebrasse: Will George’s chin hold up on September 20th?

groves555By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) has been knocked out in his last two fights against IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch and yet here Groves is fighting in a WBC 168 pound eliminator bout this month on September 20th against European super middleweight champion Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) at Wembley Arena in London, UK.

Ignoring for a second the oddity of someone fighting in an eliminator bout after coming off of two straight knockout losses, what I’m wondering is whether Groves’ chin will hold up against Rebrasse for a full 12 rounds without betraying him once again.

Groves-Rebrasse undercard to be announced on Monday

groves834By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) says that the undercard for his September 20th WBC super middleweight eliminator bout against Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) will be announced this Monday for their fight at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

Hopefully it’s a good undercard because the main event is lacking in a huge way. Sauerland Events needs to pull some of their good fighters from their stable and stack the card to make it interesting, because this fight isn’t a great one.

Dirrell awaits Groves-Rebrasse winner for first title defense

Anthony Dirrell vs Sakio Bika(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Anthony Dirrell (27-0-1, 22 KOs) put on a master-class performance last night in defeating WBC super middleweight champion Sakio Bika (32-6-3, 21 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision to win the WBC 168 pound title at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

For Dirrell, this was his second fight against Bika, as he’d fought to a 12 round draw against him last December in a fight that Dirrell opted to sit on the ropes for much of the fight. But in the rematch last night, Dirrell stayed in the center of the ring and boxed his way to a 12 round decision.

Groves: I’m two fights away from a world title

groves6677By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) feels confident that he’s going to win his next two fights to capture the WBC super middleweight title so that he can go after bigger fights like a rematch against IBF/WBA 168 pound champion Carl Froch.

Groves has lost his last two fights to Froch, yet he wants to fight him again because he thinks that he’d have a good chance of beating him in a third fight.

The World Boxing Council has made Groves’s next fight on September 20th against #2 WBC Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) a WBC super middleweight title eliminator for some reason. I’m not sure what their criteria is picking out fighters for their eliminators, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a fighter taking part in a title eliminator on the back of consecutive knockout losses like Groves.

Groves: I’ll beat Dirrell or Bika to get vacant WBC super middleweight title

groves95By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) believes he’s going to be capturing the WBC super middleweight world title in the near future by beating little known #3 WBC Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) in their fight on September 20th, and then beating the winner of the August 16th fight between WBC 175 pound champion Sakio Bika (32-5-3, 21 KOs) and unbeaten #6 WBC Anthony Dirrell (26-0-1, 22 KOs) to capture the strap.

Oddly enough, the WBC still have Groves ranked highly despite the fact that he’s been knocked out in his last two fights. Obviously, the WBC has been kind of slow in changing their rankings because Groves should have been moved downwards towards the #15 spot after those two KO defeats.
