Was Groves wearing platforms at the head to head with Murray?

By Scott Gilfoid: The 5’11 ½” George Groves (23-3, 18 KOs) looked decidedly taller than the 6’0” Martin Murray (33-3-1, 16 KOs) in their press conference today when the two of them stood facing off with one another to publicize their important fight next month on June 25 on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua vs. Dominic Breazeale card at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Murray is supposed to be at least a half inch taller than Groves, but instead of being taller, Murray looked to be at least two inches shorter than Groves and considerably lighter with the smaller frame. Looks to me like Groves might have been wearing some kind of elevator shoes to give him a size edge over Murray. A bit of gamesmanship is what it looks like to me.

George Groves faces Martin Murray on Anthony Joshua card on 6/25

groves677By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC, #10 IBF George Groves (23-3, 18 KOs) will be facing #9 WBC Martin Murray (32-3-1, 15 KOs) in a WBA super middleweight title eliminator on June 25 in the co-feature bout on the undercard of the title fight between IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and Dominic Breazeale on Sky Box Office PPV at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

The winner of the Groves-Murray fight will be the mandatory challenger to WBA 168lb champion Giovanni De Carolis. It’s interesting that Murray and Groves are able to skip over #2 WBA challenger Fedor Chudinov to fight in the WBA eliminator, especially given the reported positive drug test for the current WBA Super World super middleweight champion Felix Sturm in his fight against Chudinov last February.

George Groves vs. Martin Murray on June 25

groves442By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn will be adding former world title challenger George Groves (23-3, 18 KOs) and Martin Murray (32-3-1, 15 KOs) to the undercard of IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s next fight on June 25 at the O2 Arena in London, UK. With Joshua’s fight likely to be on Sky Box Office PPV, it makes it imperative that Hearn find a good solid match-up for the undercard in the co-feature bout.

However, Groves vs. Murray isn’t official yet, but it’s definitely one that has a good chance of ending up on the undercard on June 25. Murray plans on fighting next month on May 7 on the Anthony Crolla vs. Ismael Barroso card at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK. This would be a tune-up fight for the 33-year-old Murray. He lost his last fight to former WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham by a 12 round split decision last November.

This was the fourth time that Murray has fought for a world title and the fourth time that he’s failed to win a world title. What was especially incredible was that Murray got two chances to fight for world titles in 2015.

George Groves vs. Martin Murray in the works

murray1By Scott Gilfoid: A fight between former four-time world title challenger Martin Murray (32-3-1, 15 KOs) and two-time world title challenger George Groves (22-3, 17 KOs) is reportedly in the works for the summer. Murray’s promoter Eddie Hearn is working with Groves’ promoters at Sauerland Evens to finalize the deal.

It should be an interesting fight if it gets made. Both fighters are kind of in the same position right now in terms of their sagging careers. Groves just won his last fight against 2nd tier fighter Andrea Di Luisa last January, but before that, Groves was soundly beaten by WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack last September.
