Golovkin beats Murray, calls out Cotto for unification fight

golovkin42222By Dan Ambrose: Earlier tonight, IBO, WBA and WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) defeated England’s Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) to keep his seven-year knockout streak going in winning an 11th round knockout at the in Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The fight was supposed to have been a competitive one, but it turned out to be a one-sided fight with Golovkin battering Murray each time he could catch up to him to land his shots.

Murray tried his best tonight and was able to land some really nice shots. You could tell by the swelling on Golovkin’s fight that Murray was a lot tougher than he expected him to be. If Murray had a little more power, he would have had Golovkin on his heels in this fight, but the power was lacking with the British fighter.

Golovkin massacres Murray; Fury decisions Rudenko

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: In a total beat down, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) gave a brutal beating to a very defensive and constantly clinching #1 WBC Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) tonight in Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

By the end of the fight, Murray’s nose was bloody and his left eye badly swollen. Golovkin had Murray’s nose bleeding in the 6th round after hitting him with a series of hard left uppercuts that sliced through Murray’s clam-shell guard. Murray was covering up constantly with his clam-shell guard, but Golovkin was nailing him repeatedly with uppercuts that came underneath and powerful body shots. It’s unclear if Murray suffered a broken nose. It’ll be interesting to know if his nose was broken from the many uppercuts he ate in the fight.

Murray will prove a strong test for Golovkin

YouTube video

By Bob Smith: Today boxing fans received two treats: the knowledge that the Pacquaio-Mayweather fight is finally on for May 2, and the joy that Golovkin will fight and win tomorrow. While Martin Murray is underrated as a defensive specialist – he probably has the best defense in the middleweight division – Golovkin is equally underrated – not so much his power, but his technique, skill, ring IQ, footwork, and ability to break down his opponent.

As someone who in 375 amateur fights and 31 pro fights has never been knocked down or out, we are clearly dealing here with much more than a street brawler with power.

Martin Murray: I’m going to prove people wrong again!

1-GGGWeighIn(Photo credit: HBO) By Scott Gilfoid: Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) will be a huge underdog tomorrow night when he steps inside the ring to face what most boxing fans acknowledge as the hardest puncher and the best fighter in the middleweight division in Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs).

The fight will be taking place in Monaco, and Golovkin will have his WBA Super World middleweight title on the line. Murray, despite having some success in his fights against Sergio Martinez and Felix Sturm, he’s still a huge undercard for Saturday night.

Groves sees Martin Murray giving Golovkin his hardest fight

1-MurrayWeighIn(Photo credit: HBO) By Scott Gilfoid: Former two-time world title challenger George Groves sees challenger Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) giving WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) one of the toughest fights of his career this Saturday night at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Groves sees Murray’s size, strength, intelligence and his defense as factors that will keep him in the fight. Groves definitely doesn’t see Murray getting obliterated like many of Golovkin’s past opponents have been.

Golovkin 158.9, Murray 159.9 – Weights

1-GGGMurrayWeighInBy Scott Gilfoid: Earlier today, WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) and his opponent Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) made weight for their fight this Saturday night at the Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo. Golovkin weighed in at 158.9 pounds and looked in superb shape as usual.

Golovkin looks very close to his fighting weight. As for Murray, he weighed in at 159.9 pounds and he looked a little emaciated. Murray is expected to rehydrate into the 170s. As big as Murray looked a month ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if he rehydrated into the 180s. We’re probably looking at Murray coming into the fight with at least a 10 pound weight advantage over Golovkin when the two fighters step inside the ring on February 21st.

Golovkin and middleweight division primed to take over boxing in 2016

YouTube video

By Sizzle JKD: Here’s the bottom line: the middleweight division is the best division in boxing and Gennady Golovkin is primed to take over the division by 2016.

Why is the 160-pound division the best in boxing? Let’s start with Golovkin.

At 31-0 with 28 KO’s, Golovkin is arguably the most feared fighter in the sport. He has defeated his last 18 opponents by knockout, and his resume isn’t too shabby either. He has an impressive win against Marco Antonio Rubio, who knocked out another feared fighter in the division, David Lemieux, a few years ago.

Golovkin targeting to return in May 2015

Final Press Conference(Photo credit: Al Hart/HBO) By DA: Tom Loeffler of K2 promotions is interested in getting his fighter WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) back in the ring as soon as possible after his fight against England’s Martin Murray is taken care of this Saturday night on February 21st in Monte Carlo.

That’s assuming everything goes well for Golovkin in this fight and he adds another knockout victim or perhaps an unlikely unanimous decision. The target month for Golovkin’s next fight is May of this year, against whom is the question.

Prediction: Golovkin stops Murray by 5th round!

Final Press Conference(Photo credit: Will Hart/HBO) By Dominic Panaia: Rarely in boxing are we over awed by the talent we see whilst in the moment of today. We are looking at a fighter with not only the handsome good looks of a young distinguished actor or pop singer but the ferociousness of a lion stalking its prey.

Let’s take a look at Gennady Golovkin and where he stands today at his age and where he’s going compared to some of the great middleweight fighters of his time. (I chose to not add Sugar Ray Robinson as no one can quite compare)
At 32 yrs old with eleven defenses of his WBA Middleweight title, 31 fights with no losses and 28 KO’s, this is a fabulous record for a fighter of any era. Except for the fact that over the course of at least 5 decades we have witnessed some of the greatest middleweights to ever lace up gloves.
