Golovkin-Geale HBO numbers not impressive, averages 984K viewers

golovkin994By Chris Williams: The stats are out for last Saturday’s HBO fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Geale, and they’re less than spectacular. According to the Nielson ratings, Golovkin vs. Geale was the 8th most popular boxing fight for HBO in 2014. The fight averaged 984K viewers and peaked at 1.048M.

Dan Rafael of ESPN believes that the reason the ratings were less than tremendous was because the fight only lasted 3 rounds. But it might be the fact that Geale wasn’t a well-known opponent for Golovkin to be fighting. HBO blessed the fight, perhaps thinking that because Geale was a former IBF/WBA middleweight champion it would be a fight that could resonate with the casual boxing fans, but it doesn’t work that way.

GGG – Great, Great, Great

golovkin42By Gav Duthie: Even before he gets the fairytale fights against Canelo, Cotto, Froch or Ward I am convinced Gennady Golovkin is the real deal. Many rightly predicted that he would walk through Daniel Geale but I wasn’t sure.

I still saw Geale as an awkward top 6 middleweight who’s only losses were of the narrowest of margins and I always worry about punchers against skilful opponents. GGG is far more than a puncher. He now has 27 knockouts from his 30 wins and it is extremely rare that a puncher can settle a fight with one single blow at world level but his all round technique is fantastic.

Arthur Abraham and other big punchers.

Who, if anyone, can beat GGG?

golovkin99999By Bob Smith: The victory by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin over Daniel Geale was very impressive, and arguably the most dominant victory of the entire boxing year, in retrospect it seemed like they did not even deserve to be in the ring with each other, yet Geale is a former two time world champion at middleweight, who had never suffered a loss by knockout, won title decisions as a foreigner in Germany, and was universally ranked in the top 5 fighters in the middleweight division.

And Golovkin really just blitzed over Geale. It is an interesting reflection that tough contenders like Garbriel Rosado and Curtis Stevens last longer in the ring against Golovkin than those who have contested for titles more regularly like Geale or Matthew Macklin.

Loeffler: Golovkin to fight in October or November

golovkin22222By Allan Fox: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says that Golovkin will be back in the ring in October or November against an opponent still to be determined. Loeffler doesn’t know yet who Golovkin will be facing, but he mentioned wanting to match him against Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr next if possible.

If he can get any one of those guys in the ring, then he’ll take that fight. HBO wants to see Golovkin fight as much as possible, and they’d obviously be pleased if any of those guys came to the table to fight him.

The Golovkin-Geale fight drew 8,572 fans last night, which is double the number for Golovkin’s last fight. Loeffler feels that Golovkin’s popularity is increasing like a wildfire similar to the way that former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson became popular overnight when he became a world champion at age 19.

Geale: Golovkin is the biggest puncher in the sport

geale331By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KO’s) was skeptical about WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) being the real deal before their fight last night at Madison Square Garden in New York, but after finding out firsthand how powerful Golovin is in getting knocked out in the 3rd round, the 33-year-old Geale is now officially on board the GGG express.

Geale believes that Golovkin is the hardest puncher in boxing, and he feels that there’s really no one that has any chance of beating him right now because of his punching power.

Golovkin with unlimited fight options after victory over Geale

golovkin6666By Gavin “Neds” O’Connor: The future of the middleweight division is really starting to look very interesting and the prospect of Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) moving up to 168 or down to 154 is genuinely exciting and the potential match ups available are mouthwatering for him in either of those divisions if he’s willing to make the move.

Last night in Madison Square Garden, the seemingly unstoppable Golovkin successfully defended his WBA middleweight title in showcasing his power and talent in beating the tough Australian and former 3-time world champion Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) in the 3rd round TKO.

Gennady Golovkin: Between a rock and hard place

golovkin7356By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: WBA middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin (GGG) is a cross between former middleweight champ Marvin Hagler and former junior middleweight champ Mike McCallum. McCallum was the number one challenger to Roberto Duran’s WBA belt, but was passed over by Duran for a more lucrative fight with Thomas Hearns.

McCallum eventually won the title and made 9 defenses before meeting known fighters Milton McCrory and Donald Curry. He won both by knockout. Hagler had a hard time landing a title shot until he finally received one against Vito Antoufermo. That bout ended in a draw. Hagler got another crack at the title in England when he stopped Alan Minter. The victory was short lived as Hagler was greeted with beer bottles while celebrating in the ring.

Golovkin – Brutal Economy

golovkin3255By Daniel Hughes: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) certainly showed last night against Daniel Geale (30-3, 16ko’s) why he is now widely recognized as the best 160lb fighter on the planet with his dismantling of the durable, experienced ex-champion, Geale.

The Australian challenger for me by a level, the best opponent Golovkin has faced in the pro ranks. Golovkin to many hadn’t faced a real genuine contender yet in the middleweight division, Geale was certainly that.

Golovkin crushes Geale; Jennings decisions Perez

golovkin2By Jim Dower: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO’s) destroyed challenger former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KO’s) in a 3rd round knockout on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Golovkin knocked Geale down twice in the fight, once in the 2nd and the final time in the 3rd round. Golovkin finished Geale with a right to the head in the 3rd that put him down on his back. Geale got back on his feet but the referee Mike Ortega stopped it due to him being too hurt. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:44 of the 3rd round.

Golovkin-Geale winner could face Soliman next

golovkin63By Scott Gilfoid: IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman (44-11, 18 KOs) will be watching tonight’s fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) and Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) with great interest because he’s hoping to get the winner of the fight to face him later this year in a unification match.

Soliman has had easier title-milking fights offered to him against Andy Lee, Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray, but he wants to face the best in the winner of the Golovkin vs. Geale fight.

“I’ve had offers to fight Andy Lee in Ireland…I’ve had interest from Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray in the UK. I’ve been offered plenty of easy fights but I’m 40 now and I only want the really big fights at the end of my career,” Soliman said. “The biggest fight for me is to unify the world titles against Geale-Golovkin winner.”
