Eubank Jr. to Golovkin: “My corner don’t own towels”

Image: Eubank Jr. to Golovkin: "My corner don’t own towels"

By Eric Baldwin: British middleweight title holder Chris Eubank Jr. (23-1, 18 KOs) took a shot at Kell Brook and IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) on his social media site on Saturday when he said that if GGG wants a fight, he should face him because his corner doesn’t have towels.

It was kind of a low blow in taking a shot at the 30-year-old Brook, whose trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel into the ring in the 5th round to save him from taking punishment in his fight against Golovkin at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Brook was getting worked over by Golovkin at the time that Ingle tossed the towel into the ring to have referee Marlon Wright stop the match.

Rosado: It’s obvious why Golovkin avoided Andre Ward

Image: Rosado: It’s obvious why Golovkin avoided Andre Ward

By Dan Ambrose: Former world title challenger Gabriel Rosado says he saw weakness from IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 Kos) in his fight last Saturday night against Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) in their fight in London, England, and he can understand now why he chose not to fight former super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Rosado notes that Golovkin was easy to hit, and he thinks he can be taken advantage of if a bigger opponent can get in close to him.

Khan: Kell Brook did brilliant against Golovkin

BOXING

By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan posted a weird message on his social media site last Saturday night following Kell Brook’s 5th round stoppage loss to middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin at the O2 Arena in London, England. In the post, Khan appeared to be getting in a dig at Brook while at the same time giving him credit for giving Triple G a competitive match until his corner Dominic Ingle threw in the towel to save him from punishment in the 5th. See for yourself:

“That towel just showed the hype, overshadowed the setup. Feel for Kell. He did brilliant. [He] Dared to be great. Credit where it’s due.”

I’m not sure I understand what “hype” that Khan is talking about. Is it the Brook hype? Yeah, I don’t think Brook has ever really proven his ability in the welterweight division to be hyped properly. Brook just has that one fight against Shawn Porter to show for him in the 147lb division in terms of fighting quality opposition.

Sadly, that fight was little more than 12 rounds of spoiling for Brook, as he held Porter at every opportunity. That wasn’t real fighting. Other than that one fight against Porter, Brook faced largely horrible opposition in 12 years of record padding fights. As such, Brook came into the fight against Golovkin with a 36-0 record, but it wasn’t against quality opposition. You couldn’t really hype Brook because his resume was filled with wins over fluff opposition.

Does Kell Brook lack power for 154 division?

BOXING

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion said it himself that Kell Brook lacked the power for the middleweight division after he broke him down and stopped him in the 5th round last Saturday night at the O2 arena in London, England. I believe that Golovkin was telling the truth. The difference between the punching power and the weight of the shots of the two fighters was significant.

Brook could not slow Golovkin down with his shots because he lacked the power on them to do any damage. Brook now says he plans on moving down to the junior middleweight division because he feels like he’ll be able compete against guys at 154. I’m not sure that he can though.

I’ve seen all the top fighters at 154, and I don’t think that Brook has the power, size or the boxing skills to be a major player at junior middleweight. Here are the top fighters at 154: Jermell Charlo, Miguel Cotto, Saul Canelo Alvarez, Demetrius Andrade, Erislandy Lara, Jermall Charlo, Liam Williams and Julian Williams. Most of those guys are big enough and powerful enough to fight at middleweight. These are fighters that rehydrate into their 170s just like Golovkin does, yet they choose to fight at junior middleweight.

There’s not much difference between the power of these guys and Golovkin. They may not hit as hard, but they’re powerful enough to create a lot of problems for a pumped up welterweight like Brook. I would rate Brook well below the power of those fighters.

Kell Brook: I want Canelo-Smith winner

Image: Kell Brook: I want Canelo-Smith winner

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite getting stopped in the 5th round and suffering a broken right eye socket in the loss to Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, welterweight Kell Brook says he wants to fight the winner of this Saturday’s match between WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) feels like the 154lb division will be a better one for him, and that he’ll do better in this weight class than he showed against the unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC 160lb champion Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs). Indeed, Brook thinks he can dominate the division, which is hard to believe because the guys in that division punch very hard.

Billy Joe Saunders calls out Gennady Golovkin

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) won’t have any problems getting his unification fight against World Boxing Organization 160lb champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs), because Saunders created a video today calling Golovkin out for his next fight. Saunders, 26, saw Golovkin’s fight against the pumped up welterweight Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) last night, and he wasn’t all that impressed with what he saw from GGG. Saunders says he saw flaws in his game that he thinks he can take advantage of, and he DEFINITELY wants to fight Golovkin next.

Brook: I hurt Golovkin, his legs buckled

Image: Brook: I hurt Golovkin, his legs buckled

By Scott Gilfoid: Kell Brook lost to IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin last Saturday night, but he sure wasn’t in the mood to give him credit afterwards. Golovkin stopped the injured Brook in round five after his trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel to save him from getting seriously hurt by Triple G at the O2 Arena in London, England.

After the fight, Brook revealed that he had hurt Golovkin not just once, but twice in the fight, saying that he had buckled his knees on two occasions. I’m not sure which round Golovkin was supposedly hurt by Brook, but I guess it doesn’t matter. Brook was well beaten in suffering a broken right eye socket, and his trainer Ingle made sure the fight was stopped by throwing in the white towel to have referee Marlon Wright save Brook.

Hearn: Kell Brook was ahead of GGG on scorecards

Image: Hearn: Kell Brook was ahead of GGG on scorecards

By Scott Gilfoid: For the boxing fans that saw last Saturday’s match between IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Kell Brook, they saw Triple G break him down and get a 5th round stoppage in a fight that was clearly controlled by GGG at the O2 Arena in London, England. However, according to Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn, it was Brook who was ahead on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

Hearn says that he was told by World Boxing Council president Mauricio Suliaman moments after the fight ended that Brook was ahead on the scorecards. I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty shocking news to me, because I saw a different fight than the judges.

I had Golovkin winning round 1, 3, 4 and 5. The only round I gave to Brook was round two. I thought Brook definitely won the 2nd round, but that was his last and only hoorah in the fight.

It’s crazy to think that Brook was ahead in the fight against Golovkin through five rounds, because what rounds could you give Brook besides the 2nd? You couldn’t give him round one, because he was staggered by Golovkin. You couldn’t give Brook rounds three and four, because he was running from Golovkin.

It’s so very weird. Having Brook ahead on the scorecards reminds me of how Saul Canelo Alvarez was ahead of Amir Khan through six rounds last May. I had Khan in control of the fight four rounds to one at the time that he was knocked out in round six.
