Golovkin masterclass schools Lemieux!

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Al Classico: Yesterday we witnessed the highly anticipated battle for middleweight supremacy between Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (34-0, 31KO’s) and David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KO’s). The result went exactly as expected with Golovkin completely dominating Lemieux with his jab and control of range. Even though Lemiuex was a heavy underdog in this fight, the nature of the sport always gives the underdog the chance to be one punch away from scoring a KO win. Unfortunately for Lemieux, his chance never came.

This fight was billed as a middleweight war, but it was anything but that; instead it was a middleweight masterclass from GGG. Both men have a fearsome reputation for being knockout artists and their records certainly reflect this, however one of them has built his record on the base of strong fundamental boxing skills, the other predominantly on his raw punching ability and aggression. It is easy to see which one is which.

GGG, hype, hype, hype?

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Kurt Jean: Forget a torch bearer, forget a face of boxing and forget a PPV king. Boxing needs to get back to its roots. IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennadhy Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is tapping into that greatness that is readily available to any other fighter who is dedicated the “art” of boxing.

I cringe when I hear people saying that he’s overhyped and untested. Golovkin has 300+ amateur fights, that’s off the bat. Furthermore, let us inquire, is he fundamentally sound? Golovkin is an expert at the basics of boxing. His jabbing percentage being sufficient proof. Not every champion can claim that.

Loeffler: Golovkin’s next fight is based on what happens with Cotto-Canelo

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Tim Fletcher: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says that he won’t be making a decision about Golovkin’s next fight until the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is decided.

Loeffler is waiting to see if the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight will agree to fight Golovkin. If not, then Loeffler will need to either schedule Golovkin to face his IBF mandatory challenger Tureano Johnson, or wait and see who HBO has in mind for Golovkin. There aren’t a lot of options for Golovkin unfortunately.

Golovkin deserves No.1 P4P, not Roman Gonzalez

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin showed fully last Saturday night that there is a huge difference in talent between him and WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez. The two of them fought on the same card in front of a packed Madison Square Garden in New York.

While Golovkin boxed beautifully in pounding out an impressive 8th round knockout win over IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux in the feature bout on the card, Gonzalez had to struggle to defeat #2 WBC challenger Brian Viloria by a 9th round knockout in the co-feature bout. Gonzalez was hit often, and hurt in the 9th round from a body shot by Viloria.

Golovkin-Lemieux punch stats

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: To show how much of a mismatch last night’s fight between Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux was, Golovkin landed over three times as many punches as Lemieux in their fight in front of a huge crowd of 20,548 fans at Madison Square Garden in New York. Lemieux lost the fight by an 8th round knockout.

Lemieux, 26, couldn’t land hardly anything in the fight because he didn’t seem willing to cut the distance like he needed to in order to have a chance of winning the fight.

De La Hoya: Golovkin vs. Canelo will eventually happen

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos2By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya gave a big hint last night that we could be seeing his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) dodging a unification fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) if Canelo defeats WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight next month on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya said last night that the Golovkin-Canelo fight will happen sooner or later. This could be code for Canelo not facing Golovkin for some time, possibly two to three years.

“Absolutely, it’s a fight [Golovkin vs. Canelo] that should be made,” De La Hoya said to secondsout. “Eventually it’s going to happen. Golovkin won hands down, and I take my hat off to him, but it’s raw power. You’re talking about a fighter who has fought a lot of fighters with a lot of styles. There’s a lot of vulnerability there. So a Canelo fight against Golovkin, it has to happen.”

Golovkin: Lemieux doesn’t hit as hard as Curtis Stevens

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos1By Tim Fletcher: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) added the IBF 160lb title to his growing collection of middleweight titles last Saturday night in defeating IBF champ David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) by an 8th round knockout on HBO PPV from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Lemieux, 26, came into the fight with the reputation of being perhaps the hardest puncher in the 160lb division. However, after facing the Canadian Lemieux and taking his best shots, Golovkin and his trainer Abel Sanchez have both concluded that former Golovkin victim Curtis Stevens was the hardest puncher they’ faced, and has better power than Lemieux.

Lemieux: I was expecting more power from Golovkin

1-GolovkinLemieux_HoganphotosBy Tim Fletcher: Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) said he was expecting more power last night from IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in their unification fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The fight, which was televised by HBO pay-per-view, was stopped in the 8th round by referee Steve Willis on account of Lemiuex absorbing punishment along the ropes and bleeding from his nose. Before the stoppage, Lemieux had landed a big right hand to the head of Golovkin only moments before.

Can anyone beat Gennady Golovkin?

YouTube video

By AK: After his impressive knockout victory over ex IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 Kos) tonight in stopping him in the 8th round at Madison Square Garden, people are starting to question whether anyone can beat the current IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (34-0, 31 KO’s).
