Garcia v Judah: A boxing conundrum

Zab Judah(Photo credit: Ester Lin/Showtime) By Ben Walton: A pugilistic storm is brewing. On Feb 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, hometown veteran Zab Judah, takes on the young unbeaten WBA/WBC champion Danny swift Garcia. Now to many fans and scribes this will be nothing short of an easy nights work at the office for young Danny, out-boxing and possibly stopping the old, past it Judah. But I really think we need to look at this a little deeper before we completely dispel any notion of Zab Judah doing the impossible.

First lets look at Zab. Former 5 time world champ over 2 weight divisions, still a fighter who has decent speed, good skills and a good seasoned boxing brain. But now a man who at 35 has without doubt seen his better days pass him by. But is a 35 year old Zab really that bad to not even be in with a shout against in my opinion, a very flat footed, basic skilled, relative novice in Danny Garcia?

Judah: Danny Garcia is not going to be a network star, he’s not the one

garcia435By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) confesses that he probably only has two to three more years left in his career, but he doesn’t think that Showtime is making the right decision in hitching their wagon to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s), thinking he’s going to be a big star. Judah doesn’t see star qualities in Garcia and he thinks Showtime or even HBO are making a mistake if they invest time and effort into Garcia.

Judah said to Sportsillustrated.cnn.com “This guy [Garcia] is not the one. Everyone, HBO, Showtime, this is not the one He is not the one.”

Quillin vs. Guerrero: Peter looking to shine on Garcia-Judah card

quillin665By Eric Thomas: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) will be looking to put in a solid performance against #5 WBC, #14 WBO Fernando Guerrero (25-1, 19 KO’s) on the undercard of the Danny Garcia – Zab Judah fight on February 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Quillin, 29, won the WBO middleweight title in his last fight against WBO champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam last October by a 12 round decision. Quillin showed some positives in that fight in terms of his huge power as he was able to knock N’Dam down six times in the fight. Each time N’Dam would start making a comeback, Quillin would drop him. He had N’Dam down in the 4th, 6th and 12th rounds.

Garcia-Judah: Is this Zab’s last chance?

judah34345By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has given 35-year-old Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) an arguably undeserved chance to fight WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) on February 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Judah was knocked out last year by Amir Khan, and now he’s getting a title shot after winning one fight against Vernon Paris. If Judah gets knocked out in this fight, and it does appear that he will, you would have to conclude that Judah may have gotten his last chance at a title unless he follows the Evander Holyfield course of fighting 2nd and 3rd tier opposition and still getting title shots over and over.

Garcia-Judah: Danny with too much youth and power for Zab

Garcia and Judah argue(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: I’ve always liked Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) due to his ability to entertain and fight with a lot of heart even when he’s out of his class. With that said, I think Judah is going to be really out of his league on February 9th in his fight against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (24-0, 16 KO’s ) on HBO at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and I can’t see it going very well at all for Judah.

Garcia sees this fight as a mere formality. He knows he’s going to win and he sees Judah only making it to the 4th round before he knocks him out. Garcia knows that he’s got an old Judah that will be in the ring with him in this fight, and he’s not going to give him too much respect by letting him hang around like he did with Erik Morales in their first fight in March of this year.

Danny Garcia: Is He The Real Deal?

Dany Garcia(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) The reason I ask this is because the only notable victory on the Philadelphian’s record is Amir Khan. Danny Garcia beat Erik Morlales, who WAS an absolute gladiator in his prime, having fought some of the best in the business like Manny Pacquaio and Marco Antonio Barrera (these fights in particular were blockbusters) but he has aged a lot since then and is nowhere near the fighter he was. All credit to him still for fighting on for this long.

Back to Garcia. After defeating Khan with a crushing knockout blow to the Brits neck area he then goes on to fight Morales for a second time, I understand there may have been a clause in the contract from the first fight here, but then he goes on to fight Zab ‘Super’ Judah. How does this happen? It’s quite frustrating how Angel Garcia (Danny’s father) who is a very disrespectful guy (some may say racist too for some of his previous comments in the build up to the Khan fight) says him and his son fight ‘the best in the business’, but they come off a great, unexpected win over Khan then to fight two way past their prime fighters like Judah and Morales.

Angel Garcia: Judah goes out in four!

Image: Angel Garcia: Judah goes out in four!By Allan Fox Angel Garcia, the father of WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) wasn’t in the mood to show former two division world champion Zab Judah (42-3, 29 KO’s) any respect during their press conference this past week to promote the Garcia-Judah fight on February 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

When it came time for Angel Garcia to speak his thoughts on the fight at the podium in front of the press, Angel said “Every time he [Judah] stepped up he lost. So what is the point? He didn’t win when he fought Kostya Tszyu; that was his prime. He got clipped. That’s okay. That was his era, that was his time. This is a new era. We might be in Brooklyn. I feel for you all. It’s about Philly right now. Zab goes out in four. That’s a four round fight, he knows that. [Vernon] Paris. We used him for sparring. Danny knocked him down with the first punch. It took Zab 9 rounds to beat Paris.”

Here We Go Again: Garcia/Judah Set for Feb 7th, 2012

Image: Here We Go Again: Garcia/Judah Set for Feb 7th, 2012by Miguel Antonio “Miggs” Barragan: I hate to say it, but here we go again. On February 7th, 2013, fans will be “treated” to a championship match brought to us by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, when undefeated WBA Super/WBC/Ring Magazine Super Lightweight champion Danny “Swift” Garcia returns to the ring to face former undisputed Welterweight champion Zab “Super” Judah.

Now, as much as it irks me to no end to see Zab receive yet another undeserved title shot, truth be told, that’s like the 5th thing wrong with this equation. Although I won’t go into a melatonin evoking tirade about them, I will however beg the question, why Judah? Why not Brandon Rios or Josesito Lopez? Or, here’s an idea. How about WBC mandatory challenger Lucas Matthysse?
