Oscar Valdez stops Evgeny Gradovich

valdezBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich’s struggles continue, as he was halted in the 4th round on Saturday night by unbeaten Olympian featherweight Oscar Valdez (19-0, 17 KOs) on HBO PPV on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley at at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Valdez, 25, dropped the 29-year-old Gradovich in the 4th round with a left hook to the head. The referee then stepped in and halted the fight at 2:14 of the round. Gradovich was hurt, and the right side of his jaw was badly swollen, as if there was some potential injury there. You can argue that the fight should have been halted in the 3rd round because of the one-sided nature of the contest. With this win, Valdez captured the vacant WBO NABO featherweight title.

Evgeny Gradovich vs. Oscar Valdez possible for Pacquiao-Bradley 3 card

By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is looking to beef up the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley 3 fight card with a lot of Hispanic talent in what appears to be a way of attracting fans to purchase the card on HBO pay-per-view. One fight in particular that Arum is working on finalizing is a fight between two-time Mexican Olympian Oscar Valdez (18-0, 16 KOs) and former IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich (21-1-1, 9 KOs) in what would be a 10 round fight.

Donaire to face Evgeny Gradovich in April

donaire788884443By Chris Williams: Despite newly crowned WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire’s recent talk of wanting to fight Guillermo Rigondeaux in a rematch in 2016 to avenge his one-sided loss to him from two years ago, Donaire, 33, will be fighting fellow Top Rank fighter Evgeny Gradovich (20-1-1, 9 KO) in an in house Top Rank fight on April 16th or the 23rd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Manila..

This was not unexpected news for me, as I never thought for a second that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum would match Donaire against Rigondeaux again, at least not in this lifetime. It is just not a good match-up for Donaire, and he seems to do much better against slow, flat-footed fighters without much punching power like Gradovich.

This is obviously is not the greatest fight you can imagine, as the 29-year-old Gradovich is easy to hit, suffers cuts, and does not have much punching power.

Lee Selby wants unification fight “in a year or two”

selby044By Scott Gilfoid: After winning the IBF featherweight title last Saturday in beating champion Evgeny Gradovich (19-1-1, 9 KOs) by an 8 round technical decision, Britain’s Lee Selby (21-1, 8 KOs) says he’s going to focus on defending the IBF title for the next year or two before he starts looking to fight the other featherweight champions in unification fights.

Selby beat Gradovich by the scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73. This came after Gradovich had been cut over his right eye from a head clash. He’d also been cut over his left eye.

Kevin Mitchell v Jorge Linares – Prediction Mitchell to win @1/1, Mitchell to win by stoppage @10/3

YouTube video

By Ryan Allan: Home town favorite Kevin Mitchell will be hoping to make it 3rd time lucky in his bid to win a world title as he challenges the Venezuelan and 3 time World Champion Jorge Linares.

Mitchell lost badly in his 2 previous challenges, being stopped first by Aussie Michael Katsidis in 3 rounds before a 4th round stoppage to Scotland’s Ricky Burns derailed his 2nd attempt to win a world title but I have a feeling this will be Mitchell’s moment against a sometime vulnerable Linares.

Lee Selby hoping to get early lead against Gradovich, and then sit on the lead

selby45By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Lee Selby (20-1, 8 KOs) is hoping he can jump out to an early lead on Saturday night in his fight against IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich (19-0-1, 9 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Selby, 28, wants to put Gradovich in the position where he’ll need to rally and will literally need a KO for him to get the victory. Selby thinks he can put Gradovich into an impossible position if he can win the first seven rounds, because then Gradovich, who isn’t a big puncher, would need to be able to score a knockout for him to win.

Evgeny Gradovich vs. Lee Selby this Saturday in London, UK

selby45By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF challenger Lee Selby (20-1, 8 KOs) will be attempting to snatch the title from unbeaten IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich (19-0-1, 9 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Selby, 28, will have the hometown advantage over the 28-year-old Russian Gradovich, but I’m afraid that might not be enough for Selby. In the past, Selby, 5’8 ½”, has generally been the taller fighter in his bouts by a considerable margin.

Selby’s tall for a featherweight, and he’s used his height advantage to defeat a mix of B and C level fighters. There hasn’t been anyone good that Selby has faced, and that makes it impossible to tell whether he’s got the goods to mix it up with the best in the division. But for this fight, Selby and the 5’8” Gradovich are going to be roughly the same height with pretty the same reach.

What if there were no more hungry former Soviet boxers?

wladimir4311By Gerardo Granados: Back in 1989 the Berlin wall fall and as a domino the Soviet Union came to an end, it also came to an end the politics that prevented many brave and skillful fighters to join the ranks of prize fighting, fortunately for us fight fans now a days we can see how many hungry lions have come out from the Iron Curtain to compete and to rule supreme as boxing champions.

It is no secret that you will find many fighters who have succeeded coming from very humble origins.
