By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight contender George Groves (24-3, 18 KOs) defeated former light heavyweight title challenge Eduard Gutknecht (30-5-1, 13 KOs) by 12 round unanimous decision on Friday night to hold onto his WBA International super middleweight title at the Wembley Arena in London, England. Groves won, but he didn’t distinguish himself as being future world champion material. Groves looked like the same fighter that was soundly whipped by Carl Froch in the past.

The win for Groves puts him in position for a world title fight in 2017. Groves said after the fight that he wants to fight WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack next year so that he can try and avenge his loss to him from 2015.

George Groves vs. Eduard Gutknecht preview & analysis

By Scott Gilfoid: After fighting for THREE world titles and failing three times, super middleweight contender George Groves (24-3, 18 KOs) will be looking to put himself in position for another world title shot tonight when he faces Kazakhstan fighter Eduard Gutknecht (30-4-1, 13 KOs) tonight at the Wembley Arena in London, UK. The 28-year-old Groves will be defending his WBA International 168lb title against the now German based 34-year-old Gutknecht.

Groves is still only 28, but I see him as a very, very old fighter beyond his chronological age. You can argue that Groves hit the zenith of his career in 2011, and that he’s been going downhill since 2013. When I look at Groves’ old fights from 2011 and compare them to his recent ones, he looks like a completely different fighter.

I think Groves was a far better fighter five years ago compared to now. It’s unclear whether Groves’ two knockout losses to Carl Froch did something to him or if he just started aging quickly. Either way, I think Groves is 75% of what he was in 2011. He’s not nearly as good. Even that version of Groves was a flawed fighter, and not someone capable of winning a world title and holding it for any length of time at 168 in my estimation.

George Groves wants title shot in 2017

By Scott Gilfoid: After picking up three straight wins to get his career back on track, super middleweight contender George Groves is (24-3, 18 KOs) will be looking to get his fourth consecutive win on Friday in his fight against former world title challenger Eduard Gutknecht (30-4-1, 13 KOs). The fight against Gutknecht will be taking place at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

It’s not a great fight for Groves. In fact, you can argue that Gutknecht is a step down from Groves’ last fight against Martin Murray. Gutknecht hasn’t beaten anyone good in four years since his upset win over Vyacheslav Uzelkov in 2012.

Gutknecht lost to former WBA light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer earlier this year by a 12 round unanimous decision in March. It’s anyone’s guess why Gutknecht was picked out for Braehmer to fight, because he’s a super middleweight, not a light heavyweight.

George Groves vs. Eduard Gutknecht on November 18

By Scott Gilfoid: Former three time super middleweight world title challenger George Groves (24-3, 18 KOs) will be fighting next month against former European Boxing Union light heavyweight champion Eduard Gutknecht (30-4-1, 13 KOs) on November 18 at the Wembley Arena in London, UK. The winner of the Groves vs. Gutknecht fight will likely be getting a crack at the WBC title next year.

They might be able to leap frog over the higher ranked contenders to get a crack. I’m not sure if that would be fair, but it’s boxing. Gutknecht isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies, so a win for Groves over him shouldn’t lead to a title shot unless it’s a voluntary defense by one of the champions.

This is kind of a mismatch. Gutknecht can’t punch and he’s up there in age at 34. You have to wonder why Groves isn’t being matched tougher by being put in with #1 WBC Callum Smith or #2 WBC Anthony Dirrell. I’m sure those guys wouldn’t mind fighting Groves.

Big fight time for Braehmer

braehmer5By Gav Duthie: Another night, another routine defence for Jurgen Braehmer now 48-2 (35). Braehmer beat Eduard Gutknecht by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night in Germany. At age 37 you need to ask the question what does he want for the rest of his career.

This was the 6th successful defence of his WBA regular title, where Sergiy Kovalev owns the full title. This is the second spell the German has had with this title. It reminds me of the reign of Sven Ottke where he was content to defend his titles at home make decent money against average fighters as opposed to testing himself in major unification bouts, top contenders or big money bouts. If Braehmer does decide to step out of his comfort zone.

Juergen Braehmer defeats Eduard Gutknecht

braehmer6By Jim Dower: Making his sixth defense of his WBA light heavyweight title, Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) easily defeated an over-matched super middleweight contender Eduard Gutknecht (29-4-1, 12 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in their rematch at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany. Gutknecht was picked for this fight from the 168lb division rather than the 175lb division.

The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 116-111 and 118-110. The score of 118-110 was the more accurate one of the three, as it was just a one-sided fight. The 33-year-old Gutknecht looked more like a European level fighter rather than a world class guy.

The 36-year-old Braehmer was able to nail Gutknecht with straight lefts and right hooks all night long. Braehmer also landed a lot of uppercuts. Gutknecht had no defense against Braehmer’s uppercuts in the fight as well as his straight lefts.

Braehmer faces Gutknecht tonight

braehmer336By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (47-2, 35 KOs) defends his title tonight against a super middleweight rather than a fighter from the 175lb division when he faces former opponent Eduard Gutknecht (29-3-1, 12 KOs) in a rematch at the Jahnsportforum, Neubrandenburg, Germany.

It’s fights like this that calls for a boxing commission that will restore order to the sport. Gutknecht, 33, isn’t ranked in the top 15 at light heavyweight division. He was picked out from the super middleweight division for Braehmer to fight.

While it may seem like no issue for the average fan to see fights like this going on, it’s not a great deal if you’re one of the contenders waiting for your title shot against a champion like Braehmer.

Jurgen Braehmer faces Eduard Gutknecht on Saturday

Image: Jurgen Braehmer faces Eduard Gutknecht on Saturday(Photo Credit: Photo Wende) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World light heavyweight champion Juerge Braehmer (47-2, 35 KOs) will be pooling from the 168lb division in defending his title next on Saturday night against super middleweight contender Eduard Gutknecht (29-3-1, 12 KOs) on March 12 at the Jahnsportforum, Neubrandenburg, Germany.

The World Boxing Association has sanctioned the fight despite the fact that the 33-year-old Gutknecht isn’t ranked in the top 15 in the 175lb division. Gutknecht is ranked #6 by the WBO in the super middleweight division. Just why Braehmer had to get an opponent from the 168lb division for his next fight is unknown. He’s been doing quite nicely in defending against little known fringe contenders in the 175lb division.
