Golovkin vs. Wade averaged 1.325M viewers on HBO

1-golovkin (5)By Jeff Aranow: Last Saturday’s fight between IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) and Dominic Wade (18-1, 12 KOs) may not have been a very competitive one while it lasted, but the fight did bring in good ratings on HBO Boxing.

According to ratings for the event, Golovkin-Wade had 1,325,000 viewers on HBO with a peak of 1.388 million viewers. These were the best ratings for regular HBO since former WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto fought Daniel Geale in June of 2015.

Golovkin says Kell Brook is too small to fight

Image: Golovkin says Kell Brook is too small to fight(Photo credit: Chris Farina/K2 Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: Now that IBF/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has talen Dominic Wade’s scalp by virtue of his 2nd round knockout win last Night in Inglewood, California, golovkin is hoping to get a bigger fight against WBC middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez for Sepember in a unficiaion fight.

It’s unclear wheher Canelo will ake the fight with Golovkin because he has a big decision to make about whether it makes sense for him to make that move. One fighter we won’t be seeing Golovkin fight is IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs). Golovkin was asked last Saturday night whether he’s be agreeable to fighting he 29-year-old Brook, and he answer was no.

Sanchez: Golovkin is the #1 pound-for-pound fighter

golovkin577By Dan Ambrose: With IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s impressive knockout of Dominic Wade (18-1, 12 KOs) last night, Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez thinks he should be the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in boxing.

Golovkin is currently #3 in Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound rankings, behind #1 Roman Gonzalez and #2 Sergey Kovalev. However, after Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez’s less than spectacular performance last night in winning a grueling 12 round decision over fringe contender McWilliams Arroyo (16-3, 14 KOs) in the co-feature, you can make a strong argument that Gonzalez (45-0, 38 KOs) no longer the #1 guy in the pound-for-pound rakings, if he ever deserved to be there in the first place.

I thought Gonzalez looked poor in his previous fight against Brian Viloria last October, but he looked even worse last night.

Golovkin-Wade punch stats

golovkin823By Jeff Aranow: Dominic Wade (18-1, 12 KOs) was heavily routed last night in his 2nd round stoppage loss to IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) on HBO.

This was supposed to have been the 25-year-old Wade’s moment in the sun, his 15 minutes of fame, but it turned out to be a disastrous night for the Al Haymon-managed fighter. Wade proved that he didn’t belong in the ring with Golovkin and shouldn’t have been put in the position to fight him in the first place by the IBF.

To no great surprise, Golovkin landed twice as many punches as Wade with many of those shots being very hard ones that quickly took the air out of him.

Jones expects Canelo to avoid Golovkin fight for Pacquiao payday

golovkin901By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Roy Jones Jr. doubts that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will choose to fight interim WBC champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin if Canelo can get past his fight in two weeks against Amir Khan, because Jones believes that Canelo will be facing Manny Pacquiao for much more money. Golovkin looked sensational last night in dispatching Dominic Wade (18-1, 12 KOs) in two rounds in a fight televised by HBO Boxing from The Forum in Inglewood, California. The win by Golovkin may have scared Canelo off unfortunately.

There’s little doubt that Pacquiao’s promoters at Top Rank would make the fight between Pacquiao and Canelo if the Filipino star chooses to return to the ring this year. However, Pacquiao is now retired and is supposed to be going into a life of politics in the Philippines.

Pacquiao is not likely going to come back to the sport to fight a dangerous opponent like Canelo, who would have at least a 20-pound weight advantage over him, possibly even as 25lb weight advantage. That would be an unreal circus-like fight.

Golovkin beats Wade, then calls out Canelo

golovkin83By Jeff Aranow: Fighting in front of a big crowd of 16,353 fans, IBF/IBO/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) put Dominic Wade (18-1, 12 KOs) down three times before the fight was stopped in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

After the fight, Golovkin had a message to WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to bring his WBC belt and give it to him. Golovkin said this because he obviously feels that Canelo won’t be choosing to fight him after he beats Amir Khan in their fight on May 7.

golovkin94By Jim Dower: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) scored his 22nd consecutive knockout in stopping an embarrassingly over-matched #3 IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade (18-1, 12 KOs) in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin dropped the 25-year-old Wade three times in the fight. The fight was halted after Golovkin dropped Wade twice in the 2nd round. A badly hurt Wade was unable to beat the count by the referee.

Can Golovkin become the next Pacquiao in popularity?

1-wade-vs-golovkin (2)By Patrick McHugh: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s popularity has been skyrocketing since he started at having his fights routinely televised in the United States since 2012. What’s even more impressive about the growth in Golovkin’s fan base is the fact that he’s done it without having faced a big name like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Oscar De La Hoya, Daniel Jacobs, or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golovkin has done it the hard way by fighting little known fighters for the most part and looking good in those fights by knocking out all of his opponents.

Golovkin has a chance to become the next Manny Pacquiao in terms of popularity in the U.S if he can keep building his fan base. I would say the next Floyd Mayweather Jr., but Golovkin isn’t an American like Mayweather. Golovkin is more in the same boat as Pacquiao, a talented foreign fighter with an offensive style of fighting that results in a lot of knockouts.

Golovkin-Wade: Don’t count Dominic out tonight

1-wade-vs-golovkin (2)By Chris Williams: A lot of fans are counting out Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) tonight for his fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in their HBO televised match.

I think these people are selling Dominic short. He’s got the ability to give Triple G his first loss of his career and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s exactly what we see tonight. Triple G looks overrated to me, and I don’t think he’s nearly as good as what the people say he is.
