Keith Thurman and Diego Chaves square off on July 27th on Showtime in San Antonio, Texas

thurman32 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated welterweight Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) will be getting a chance to show if he’s for real or not against Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) on July 27th from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The WBA interim World welterweight title will be on the line for the winner and Showtime will be televising the fight in the United States. This will be the 24-year-old Thurman’s big chance to show that he belongs among the top fighters at 147. He’s called out the likes of Paulie Malignaggi, Tim Bradley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the past, to name a few, but he didn’t have the resume to show that he belonged with those guys in the ring.

Keith Thurman in position to win interim WBA 147 lb. title against Chaves

thurman3By Allan Fox: #4 WBA, Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) is looking good right now to beat undefeated Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) to claim the interim WBA welterweight title this month on July 27th at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Thurman, 24, has most of the advantages in this fight against the 27-year-old Chaves. Thurman is taller, stronger, faster, better defensively and a little more experienced against better opposition than Chaves.

The only thing we don’t know about Thurman is how he’ll handle his first real puncher of his career. Chaves hits harder than the guys that Thurman has been facing, and we’ve already seen that Thurman can be hit.

Marcos Maidana vs. Adrien Broner: An intriguing and likely matchup in the future

maidana564By Dallas Orysiuk It has been almost two weeks since boxing fans witnessed a thriller, a candidate for fight of the year (FOTY)… they witnessed Marcos Maidana vs. Josesisto Lopez. Going into the match-up, everyone knew it was going to be exciting and for as long as this war lasted, it lived up to the expectations.

This weekend we have another interesting matchup to look forward to, Adrien Broner vs. Paulie Malignaggi. Do not expect the same exciting fight as Maidana vs. Lopez, but this matchup has implications that can lead to some exciting matchups in the future. Broner moves up two weight divisions to challenge Paulie Malignaggi for his WBA welterweight strap.

Thurman-Chaves & Berto-Soto Karass on July 20th or 27th on Showtime

thurman432By Allan Fox: According to Dan Rafael, Golden Boy Promotions is putting together a big fight card on July 20th or July 27th on Showtime with #10 WBC welterweight Jesus Soto-Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) facing former IBFC/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) and #1 WBO, #4 WBA, #13 IBF, Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) battling Interim WBA World welterweight champion Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) at a still to be determined venue.

This is a good card because we’ll find out a lot of things starting with whether Berto has anything left in the tank after having lost two out of his last three fights and looked poor in all three of them. Berto is coming off of a 12 round unanimous decision loss to Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero last November.

Malignaggi must defend WBA title against Diego Chaves next

Image: Malignaggi must defend WBA title against Diego Chaves nextBy William Mackay: If WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) wants a shot at a rematch against 34-year-old Ricky Hatton next year than Malignaggi will have to defend his title against WBA interim welterweight champion Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) by January 27th, 2013, according to fightnews.com.

That’s what the World Boxing Association has ordered now. If Malignaggi thought his fight with #10 WBA Pablo Cesar Cano was tough then just wait until he gets int the ring with the harder hitting, more accurate 26-year-old Chaves. Malignaggi won’t be able to beat this guy by throwing a pesky jab for 12 rounds. That’s not going to happen. Malignaggi will have to either slug or run, and it’s doubtful he’ll win fighting like that.

Amir Khan vs. Diego Chaves a possibility for December 15th

Image: Amir Khan vs. Diego Chaves a possibility for December 15thBy William Mackay: Unbeaten WBA interim welterweight champion Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) says he’s been offered a fight against Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) and he’s currently considering the offer according to Ole.com. Chaves, 26, is coming off of a 2nd round knockout win over Jose Miranda last Saturday night in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Khan, 25, needs a fighter with an impressive record and some talent for HBO to approve his next fight on their network on December 15th. The last two names that were floated to HBO, Joan Guzman and Humberto Soto, weren’t good enough to get an agreement from them to televise the fight. Chaves isn’t any better known than Guzman and Soto. However, the difference is Chaves is ranked high at #1 by the World Boxing Association in the welterweight division, and he’s got respectable power.
