By Jim Dower: #3 IBF Richard Commey (24-2, 22 KOs) suffered his second consecutive loss on Friday night in losing to #5 IBF Denis Shafikov (38-2-1, 20 KOs) by a 12 round split decision in their IBF lightweight eliminator math at the Tough Fight Gym in Moscow, Russia. The final judges’ sores were 116-112, 115-113 for Shafikov and 116-112 for Commey.

Boxing News 24 had Shafikov winning 7 rounds to 5. Shafikov, 31, was outworked by Commey in the first five rounds of the match, but the Russian fighter rallied in the last seven rounds to get the edge. The wasn’t much of a crowd that showed up to see this fight.

It looked like there was all 100 boxing fans that showed. I’m sure there were people than that, but probably not much. This was one of the smallest crowds I’ve seen for a match between top contenders. It just a tiny group of people that showed up to see the Commey vs. Shafikov contest.

Referee Gary Rosato stopped the contest at :036 of the round.

Herring’s corner threw in the towel in the 10th to save their badly hurt fighter who was defenseless at the time. Shafikov, 31, knocked Herring down with a big right hand to the head in the 2nd round that sent the former 2012 U.S Olympian to the ropes. The ropes held Herring up, so the referee counted it as a knockdown.

Barthelemy used a strong jab and a lot of hard pot shots to dominate Shafikov in a fight that was less than thrilling to watch at times. The judges scored the fight 119-109, 116-112 and 116-112. The 119-109 score seemed the most realistic of the three scores. Shafkov was able to and some nice shots, but he struggled with Barthelemy’s reach and outside fighting style.

Shafikov Bludgeons Nugaev in Nine

nugaevBy Marc Livitz: Denis “Djingis Khan” Shafikov dished out a thorough clubbing of Rustam “Mongoose” Nugaev tonight in an IBF lightweight title eliminator at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California.

Denis scored a ninth round TKO victory. The all-Russian affair promised fireworks and the orthodox (Nugaev) vs southpaw matchup began at a tactical pace. Shafikov anticipated Rustam’s jab well and was able to block it at times. Denis landed a short left to close the round. The close in fighting continued through the second but the leather began to flutter, if not fly once the third round bell sounded. Shafikov bloodied Nugaev’s nose early and sought to capitalize. Body shots caused Rustam to stand straight up more than once and the follow up uppercuts from Denis did even more damage.
