Lemieux-Stevens, Gamboa-Alvarado & Culcay-Andrade predictions

By Harry Rowland: This should be an exciting matchup with two come-forward punchers going head to head. This contest is not a title eliminator of any kind but is a crossroads fight. The winner aiming to stay relevant as a middleweight contender. Both fighters are slightly past their best but both still hungry to fulfil their previous potential.

Lemieux’s 36-3 (32) career was off to a fast start, notching up 25 straight wins, with all but one coming via knockout. Then he ran into veteran boxer Marco Antonio Rubio, who looked to be heading the same way as the others until he managed to weather the storm and expose Lemieux as somewhat of an on-top fighter, stopping him in 7 once he had emptied his tank.

By Dan Ambrose: #4 WBC, #4 WBO, #6 IBF middleweight contender David Lemieux (36-3, 32 KOs) will be fighting former world title challenger Curtis Stevens (29-5, 21 KOs) on HBO Boxing After Dark on March 11 at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York. There will be no titles on the line for this fight.

It’s just good match-up between two big sluggers. The winner of the fight will stay in the running for an eventual world title shot against one of the champions. Lemieux, 28, is a former IBF middleweight champion that is co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. It’s believed by many boxing fans that Golden Boy is saving Lemieux for an eventual fight against their flagship star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at some point in the future.

WBC’s plans for Gennady Golovkin

Image: WBC’s plans for Gennady Golovkin

By Eric Baldwin: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s WBC mandatory challenger is going to be decided with a 4-man tournament held by the World Boxing Council. This is something the WBC has decided to do during their convention this week. The 4-fighters that will face each other in the tournament are as follows: David Lemieux, Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Ievgen Khytrov and Curtis Stevens. None of these fighters are great choices for Golovkin. Jermall Charlo needs to move up to 160 to give Golovkin a good opponent in near future.

The WBC tournament wouldn’t figure to be a great deal for Heiland, who has been ranked #1 by the WBC for quite some time without getting a title shot. For Heiland to have to fight for the mandatory sport, it creates a hoop to have to jump through.

Curtis Stevens vs. James De La Rosa Added to Kovalev-Ward

stevens1

Curtis “Cerebral Assassin” Stevens (28-5, 21 KOs) returns to the ring and the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on the Kovalev-Ward “Pound For Pound” non-televised undercard to face James “The King” De La Rosa (23-4, 13 KOs) in a ten-round middleweight showdown.

Stevens, 31, of Brownsville, Brooklyn returned to the ring on May 7 of this year and stopped previously undefeated Brazilian prospect Patrick Teixeira in the second round on the HBO Pay-Per-View® undercard of Canelo-Khan. The victory over Teixeira catapulted Stevens back into the ranking of all four sanctioning bodies, including top ten ratings in both the IBF and WBC. He is hoping to continue that momentum and secure another shot at the middleweight title.

De La Rosa, 28, is originally from Mexico but now resides in San Benito, Texas. His most recent win was a unanimous decision upset over former title contender Alfredo Angulo on the undercard of Mayweather-Maidana. De La Rosa has suffered two back-to-back losses since his win over Angulo but both have come at the hands of two previously undefeated prospects in Hugo Centeno Jr. and Jason Quigley. Commonly, fighters in his position would prefer a tune-up to get back on a winning track but, in this case, De La Rosa opted out of that easy route and decided to test himself against another former title contender in Stevens.

David Lemeiux vs. Curtis Stevens negotiations stalling out

Image: David Lemeiux vs. Curtis Stevens negotiations stalling out

By Chris Williams: It looks like the much talked about fight between former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux and Curtis Stevens won’t be taking place on October 22 on HBO as boxing fans had hoped. The negotiations between the two fighters have hit a stall, and it appears that the fight won’t be salvaged with help from HBO.

I had a feeling that Lemieux vs. Stevens wouldn’t happen when I first heard of the fight. I could not see Lemieux facing a live body like Stevens, because he’s too dangerous and would likely knock Lemieux into next week.

David Lemieux vs. Curtis Stevens on October 22

Image: David Lemieux vs. Curtis Stevens on October 22

By Dan Ambrose: David Lemieux will be facing the hard hitting and dangerous Curtis Stevens on October 22 in Montreal, Canada. Lemieux, former International Boxing Federation middleweight champion, is expected to have his fight against Stevens (28-5, 21 KOs) announced by his promoters at The Eye of the Tiger Promotions shortly.

Lemieux, #3 WBC, #4 WBO, 7 IBF, was being talked about for a fight against James Kirkland, but that fight won’t be happening. That would have been a far better match-up for the 27-year-old Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs), because Kirkland has fought only once in the past three years and that was his 3rd round knockout loss to Saul “Canelo: Alvarez last year in May 2015.

David Lemieux to fight in October or November

lemieux5

By Dan Ambrose: David Lemieux will be fighting before the end of this year in October or November, possibly against middleweight contender Curtis Steven (28-5, 21 KOs). Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs) lost his IBF middleweight title to Gennady Golovkin last October in an 8th round knockout loss. Since that fight, Lemieux has come back and beaten ring rusty Glen Tapia by a 4th round knockout last May.

It’s hard to tell if the 27-year-old Lemieux has improved since his loss to Golovkin, because his opponent was too poor to show where he’s at.

Lemieux’s next fight will likely take place in his home city of Montreal, according to RingTV. Lemieux’s promoters at Golden Boy are interested in staging his next fight there. Lemieux is currently ranked #3 WBC, #4 WBO, #7 IBF. He’s ranked high enough for him to soon get another title shot.
