Terrence Crawford v Yuriorkis Gamboa review

gamboa00000By James Allen: In his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska on the twenty-eighth of June 2014, Terrence Crawford successfully beat back the challenge of Yuriorkis Gamboa to his WBO Light-Welterweight title.

The two men met with identical undefeated records, though Gamboa’s campaign has mainly been waged at Super-Featherweight, and the disparity in size between the two has been evident ever since the first press conference. This clearly didn’t matter to Gamboa then, and it didn’t seem to bother him as they listened to the silky tones of Michael Buffer introduce the fight to a rabidly partisan crowd.

Gamboa’s stock goes up in loss to Crawford

gamboa64By Dan Ambrose: The former IBF/WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16 KO’s) really raised his stock last Saturday night in his fight against junior middleweight sized WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KO’s) in their fight at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

While Gamboa ended up losing the fight by a 9th round knockout after referee Genaro Hernandez pulled the plug on the fight following a knockdown of Gamboa in the round, it was a very spirited performance from the Cuban star in fighting someone much bigger than him in the 5’8”, 152 pound Crawford. Gamboa, only 5’5”, was fighting what was essentially a junior middleweight last Saturday night in 26-year-old Crawford, and he did a good job of it.

Crawford entered ring at 152 lbs for Gamboa fight

crawford3By Chester Rivers: Last night in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.A, WBO lightweight champion Terrance Crawford defended his 135 lb championship against challenger Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16 KO’s). The only problem was Crawford entered the ring unofficially 152 lbs. During their pre-fight instructions, there was no doubt as to who was the larger man. Crawford dwarfed the 5’5 1/2″ Gamboa as the two fighters stood nose to nose will receiving instructions from the referee. If ever there was a time to bring back the same day weigh in the time is now.

Weighing in on the same day ended in the early 1980’s. Because promoters were in fear of losing money when one fighter would come in overweight and the other fighter refusing to fight because of this issue.

Crawford: I saw Gamboa as a featherweight, not a lightweight

gamboa0000By Dan Ambrose: One of the reasons why WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KO’s) felt assured of victory going into last night’s fight against 5’5 ½” Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16 KOs) was because he saw him as someone who was little more than a pumped up featherweight who had moved up in weight to the lightweight division, but who really belonged still at featherweight.

Crawford, 5’8”, outweighed Gamboa on the night of the fight 152 to 145, and had a long reach advantage of 5” inches. It was no wonder that with all of the things in his favor that Crawford was going to come out ahead when the two of them went at it last night at the CenturyLink Center, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. Crawford used his size to stop Gamboa in the 9th round after putting him down 4 times in the fight.

Crawford gloats after win: “I told Gamboa ‘you shouldn’t have taken this fight'”

crawford8888By Dan Ambrose: WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KO’s) was in the mood to gloat about his win at the post-fight press conference on Saturday night after knocking challenger Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16 KO’s) in the 9th round at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Crawford said after the fight at the post-fight press conference, “We train extremely hard. I was ready for anything he was gonna bring. I commend Gamboa. But I was destined to win. I told him, ‘You shouldn’t have taken this fight.’”

You couldn’t blame Gamboa for taking the fight because he had tried to get a fight against Mikey Garcia at super featherweight, but Top Rank couldn’t make that fight. So instead of letting Gamboa fight Mikey, and possibly beat him, they let Gamboa fight the bigger Crawford, who is more like a light welterweight than a lightweight.

Gamboa’s career takes a big hit in losing to Crawford

gamboa63By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA featherweight champion Yuriokis Gamboa (23-1, 16 KO’s) suffered a huge blow to his career in losing tonight to WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KO’s) in his first defense of his WBO 135 pound title at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Gamboa came into the fight needing a big win to keep his career afloat after having done nothing for the last year. But it was Crawford who came out on top in the fight knocking the Cuban down 4 times in getting a knockout in the 9th round. Gamboa got to his feet after getting planted by a right uppercut, but there was no way that referee Genaro Hernandez was going to allow Gamboa to continue fighting.

Crawford vs. Gamboa: Don’t be surprised if Yuriorkis wins tonight

gamboa6999By Dan Ambrose: Most of the boxing world is picking the bigger, younger and more defensive WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (23-0, 16 KO’s) to successfully defend his title tonight against the shorter, older and more experience Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s) at the CenturyLink Center, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA.

But we might see an upset with Gamboa getting the better of Crawford on the inside with quick combinations and hard power shots. Gamboa has had months to get ready for this fight, and he’s obviously had an earful about how he needs to increase his work rate to defeat the counter punching Crawford.
