delahoya744By Chris Williams: Promoter Oscar De La Hoya thinks that last night’s fight between his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) delivered a great fight to the fans compared to the disappointment of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight that took place earlier this year in May in the “Fight of the Century” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya says that the fans were on their feet cheering the action in the Cotto-Canelo fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision by a set of wide scores on HBO PPV.

Marquez: Canelo can beat Golovkin, but not Mayweather

Marquez thinks Canelo can beat Golovkin if he fights defensively by making the Kazakhstan fighter miss with his power punches like he was making Cotto miss last night in their fight on HBO PPV from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya: Canelo is ready for Mayweather

canelo95By Dan Ambrose: While the entire boxing world was busy talking up a fight between Gennady Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last night following Canelo’s 12 round unanimous decision win over 35-year-old Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) in Las Vegas, Nevada, Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya seemed to have other ideas, saying that there’s a lot of other big fights out there potentially for the 25-year-old Canelo other than a fight against Golovkin.

One of those fights is a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs). De La Hoya said that they will take the fight with Mayweather in May if he chooses to come back and agrees to fight Canelo.

de la hoya555By Dan Ambrose: After Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) tonight by a 12 round unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC middleweight title, Canelo said that he’ll fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) next if that’s what the boxing fans want from him.

However, it looks now like Canelo spoke too soon, because his promoter Oscar De La Hoya, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said at the post-fight press conference that there are other fights for Canelo at 154 and 160. De La Hoya said they’ll be sitting down with Canelo to decide on who his next opponent should be.

The younger 25-year-old Canelo won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision, but more and more boxing fans are emerging who feel that the fight should have been either scored a draw or a close victory for Canelo. I had Canelo winning the fight 7 rounds to 5, but it was pretty close. It wasn’t what the judges scored the fight. They had it 117-111, 119-109 and 118-110 for Canelo.

De La Hoya can forget Cotto-Canelo rematch

cotto444By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has been saying for weeks now that boxing fans shouldn’t push Canelo to fight Gennady Golovkin because Canelo’s fight against Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) might be competitive or it might bring in a ton of pay-per-view buys on HBO.

Now that we know that the fight wasn’t competitive tonight after Canelo’s easy win over a much lighter looking Cotto, it pretty much undercuts any argument that De La Hoya has for pushing for an immediate rematch between the two fighters.

Rivera: Moments ago, the 25-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous deicsion to win the vacant WBC middleweight title at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. I scored the fight 8 rounds to 4, 116 – 112, for Canelo. The official scores were 117-111, 119-109 and 118-110.

Canelo boxed and fought a smart fight. My only hope now is that he will start getting the respect he deserves. Many writers and analysts have tried writing him off as a manufactured champion. This win over the 35-year-old Cotto should put that to bed.

canelo6666By Jim Dower: The much bigger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) used his huge size advantage over Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) to win a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night to win the vacant WBC middleweight title in their catch-weight fight at 155lbs at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judge’s scores were 117-111, 119-109, 118-110.

Canelo simply had too much size for the smaller Cotto. It’s unclear how much Canelo rehydrated for the fight, but he looked at a career high in terms of weight. Canelo looked at least 180 tonight.

1-Alvarez-Cotto (1)By Dan Ambrose: Like a lot of people who saw Friday’s weigh-in, IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin thinks Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) took too much weight off to get down to the 155lb catch-weight for his fight tonight against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) on HBO PPV from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo looked painfully thin in coming in at 155lbs for the catch-weight, and had the look of someone who had to cut a lot of weight to make the limit. Considering that Canelo tends to rehydrate into the mid-170s, he possibly lost as much as 20 pounds. Cotto looked great, like he was ready to step inside the ring and fight hard for 12 rounds. You could tell that Cotto wasn’t going to regain much weight after he rehydrates because he looked pretty much like he always does for his fights.
