Let us debate: Cotto and No Doubt Trout

Image: Let us debate: Cotto and No Doubt TroutEveryone that either witnessed or observe the fight between Miguel Cotto and WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout were obviously in for a surprise. Whether you were like me, and believed that Trout would pull out the victory, but he was going to have to dominate being at MSG. Whether you were the latter and believed Cotto’s experience and quality of fighters he has fought would ultimately be his rise and ability to conquer his opposition. We all were wrong!

As true boxing fans and analyst, we should have learned a lot. The first being, which is the most overused quote in boxing that “Every fighter has the possibility to lose by a punch.” I agree with that on only when a fighter that isn’t prepared. As carefully as matches are made today, we the public are rarely surprised. We have to take in all factors, with promotional companies, choice of venue, and ultimately the best interest of the fighter and their boss, not the fans.

Miguel Cotto should fight Kirkland next, or rematch Austin Trout

Image: Miguel Cotto should fight Kirkland next, or rematch Austin TroutBy Jorge Lugo: I find it funny that everyone is jumping on the “Cotto should retire” campaign. Truthfully, after watching Cotto vs. Trout three time’s it’s clear that the first six rds were even, and that Trout won because he pulled it out in the 2nd half (with Cotto still putting out an effort but not enough). The sad thing is, nowadays, everyone assumes just cause a fighter loses he should retire.

Newsflash though, this is boxing and a loss should not mean the end of Cotto, especially since he did put a good fight against a fighter that no one wanted a piece of prior! If I was Cotto I would either request an immediate rematch or fight James Kirkland.

Pacquiao: Cotto doesn’t look like the same fighter he once was

Image: Pacquiao: Cotto doesn't look like the same fighter he once wasBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao wasn’t impressed with the performance by Miguel Cotto in his 12 round decision loss to WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last Saturday night. Pacquiao thinks Cotto doesn’t look like the same fighter who he beat in 2009, and he definitely believes that Cotto deserved to lose the fight against Trout.

Speaking with Yahoo Sports, Pacquiao said “To me, I see Cotto as different than before when we fought. This time he seemed a little slow and the punches weren’t really hard. I was rooting for Cotto but I think he lost.”

Cotto was overtrained for Trout, says Hunter

Image: Cotto was overtrained for Trout, says HunterBy Allan Fox: Expert boxing trainer Virgil Hunter wasn’t surprised that Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) was beaten last Saturday night by WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) because he felt that Cotto’s physique, and the way he fought, looked like someone that had over-trained during preparation for the fight. Hunter didn’t see the normal movement and power that Cotto normally has, and thinks he made a huge blunder by choosing to train at high altitude for the fight.

Hunter said to RingTV “He [Cotto] trained too hard to be facing a 27-year-old guy who is big and strong. The combination of high altitude and and the over-training and he was facing a young man.”

Schaefer: Trout’s victory over Cotto isn’t enough to get him Canelo

Image: Schaefer: Trout's victory over Cotto isn't enough to get him CaneloBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer came right out and said that he’s not planning on letting WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout face his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next. Schaefer said that he prefers matching Miguel Cotto up with Canelo instead. As for Trout, Schaefer feels that he needs at least three possibly four fights before he can maybe get a shot against Canelo.

Speaking with ESPN, Schaefer said “I don’t think one fight itself gives you a big, big fight. It’s an accumulation of things you do. I really don’t see that [Trout vs. Alvarez] happening…Maybe have Trout get a few more big fights, then ease your way into it.”

Trout: I’ll fight Cotto again if there’s any doubt about the decision

Image: Trout: I'll fight Cotto again if there's any doubt about the decisionBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) says he’ll give Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) an immediate rematch if Cotto wants it or if boxing fans question who results of his 12 round decision win over Cotto last Saturday night in New York.

Trout won by a 12 round unanimous decisions by the scores of 119-109, 117-111 and 117-111. Thus far, few fans have questioned the results of the fight, and Cotto hasn’t been vocal about wanting to fight Trout again despite his unhappiness with the wide scores.

Cotto needs to move back down to 147 if he wants to prolong his career

Image: Cotto needs to move back down to 147 if he wants to prolong his careerBy Allan Fox: The short 5’7″ Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) really never had the size to be fighting at junior middleweight to begin with after moving up to the division back in June 2010 when his then promoter Bob Arum matched him against one of his Top Rank stable fighters Yuri Foreman, who had little power and a bad right knee.

Cotto beat him of course and then defeated Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito, neither of which were true junior middleweights. When Cotto finally did face his first real able-bodied junior middleweight in WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) last Saturday night, Cotto looked like he didn’t belong in the same division as him.

Is Trout now too dangerous for Mayweather?

Image: Is Trout now too dangerous for Mayweather?By John F. McKenna (McJack): With his impressive 12 round unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) it is quite possible that undefeated Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) has eliminated himself from consideration of being a future opponent for WBA light middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s). Trout decisively defeated the popular Cotto on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Ringside officials scored the fight 119-110, 119-108, 119-108 in Trout’s favor.

Despite what “Money May” says publicly, Trout may now be deemed as being too dangerous and too much of a risk for the #1 ranked pound for pound boxer in the world. It is thought by many boxing pundits that Mayweather has been avoiding Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao (54-4-1, 38 KO’s) for years for the same reason, the “Pacman” is just too dangerous an opponent.

Trout: I would beat Saul Alvarez like I did Cotto

Image: Trout: I would beat Saul Alvarez like I did CottoBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) is convinced that he would have schooled 22-year-old WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) as easily as he did with Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) last Saturday night had Alvarez been in the ring with him instead of Cotto at the Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.

Trout said in an interview with RingTV after the fight “[I would have beaten Canelo] Something similar to this one. He [Alavrez] gets hit a lot easier than Cotto. I wouldn’t be surprised [If Cotto fights Alvarez next]. I’m going for th rest of the belts. It was pretty quite in the garden.”

Trout’s stock goes up after beating Cotto; Mayweather’s stock goes down

Image: Trout's stock goes up after beating Cotto; Mayweather's stock goes downBy Allan Fox: In comparing how Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout both dealt with the same opponent Miguel Cotto in beating him this year it would seem that Mayweather’s skills are really starting to deteriorate at 35. Mayweather had to really struggle to beat Cotto, and the outcome was in doubt until Cotto faded badly after the 8th round last May. The fight was very winnable for Cotto if not for that.

Mayweather might was to look to get the Manny Pacquiao fight while he still can, because if he gets beaten by someone, which is a good possibility given his performance against Cotto, the big money that he’d have gotten against Pacquiao will go way down. The fight can still be made, but you can’t expect boxing fans to purchase a fight in high numbers involving two fading stars heading into their final years.
