Sergio Martinez agrees to terms for Cotto fight on June 7th

martinez7 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) has reportedly agreed to terms for a title defense against 33-year-old former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) on June 7th at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. Cotto still needs to agree to his portion of the contract for the fight to move ahead. However, this is a fight that Cotto really wants, as he’s eager to try and capture a 4th division world title.

Cotto prefers to fight the 38-year-old Sergio Martinez rather than the middleweight champion considered to be the best in the division in Gennady Golovkin, and that makes a lot of sense. Cotto’s chances of winning a world title are much better if he faces Sergio than if he were to fight Golovkin. Indeed, Cotto doesn’t match up at all with Golovkin, and that fight would likely result in another stoppage loss for Cotto.

Cotto making a mistake in fighting Sergio Martinez

cotto67By Dan Ambrose: 33-year-old Miguel Cotto is about to make a huge mistake in attempting to capture a 4th division world title against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on June 7th at Madison Square Garden. You can kind of see why Cotto is selecting Sergio to fight instead of taking on the younger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and getting a payday of $10 million+ for the fight.

Sergio is about to turn 39, he’s coming off of a poor performance against Martin Murray in which he probably should have lost, and he’s starting to have problems with reoccurring injuries. In addition to that, Sergio isn’t as popular as the red-haired Canelo, meaning that Cotto can use his better popularity to get what he wants out of the negotiations in terms of a bigger purse, the venue for the fight, and most likely a catch-weight that benefits him.

Cotto says he wants Sergio Martinez next

cotto552By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) finally came out and announced today that he plans on trying to face WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) on June 7th in what he hopes will be at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Cotto had a bigger offer of $10 million+ made by Golden Boy Promotions to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next on March 8th, but Cotto likes the idea of fighting Martinez, because he has the WBC 160 lb. title in his possession and Cotto likes the idea of trying to capture a fourth division world title against the aging 38-year-old Martinez.

Arum confident Cotto-Martinez fight takes place on June 7th

martinez44By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is confident that a fight between Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) will be taking place on June 7th on New York on the Puerto Rico Independence Day weekend. Arum wants to stage the fight at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Cotto turned down the $10 million+ offer this week made by Golden Boy Promotions for him to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on March 8th. Cotto is turning that fight down at this time, but he’ll likely come back to it after he faces Sergio Martinez. Of course, if Cotto gets knocked out by Sergio on June 7th, then the $10 million offer might not be there anymore. If Golden Boy still wants to match Canelo against a beaten Cotto in the 2nd part of 2014, it’s difficult to imagine Golden Boy’s $10 million offer still being on the table.
