Roach: Geale looked fragile and very thin at weigh-in, Cotto will go for his body

geale783(Photo credit: Will Hart/HBO) By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach was gloating about how weak and thin Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) looked at the weigh-in on Friday after he had to drain down to get to the 157 pound catch-weight for his title fight against World Boxing Council 160 pound champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) on Saturday.

Roach says that Cotto will make it a point in going after the body of the 34-year-old Geale because he believes he’s weak from losing water weight to get down to the 157 pound catch-weight.

Weights: Cotto 153.6, Geale 157

cotto12345(Photo Credit: Will Hart/HBO) By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) just barely made weight on Friday in coming in right at 157 pounds to make weight for his 157lb catch-weight bout against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) on Saturday night on HBO Championship Boxing from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

For his part, Cotto came in really light at 153.6. Cotto’s weight is definitely a concern here because he’s likely not going to rehydrate more than seven pounds. We’re probably talking about Cotto walking into the ring at 160, or possibly a little heavier than that.

Geale: Miguel Cotto is in for a big surprise

1-Press Conference Cotto vs Geale 02 (2)By Dan Ambrose: Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) feels like he’s being totally overlooked by the 34-year-old Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) for their fight this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Geale thinks Cotto and his team are totally focused on their next fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez rather than the present one. He thinks they’re only thinking about the money fight against the 24-year-old Canelo.

Geale has a good chance to upset Cotto

Image: Geale has a good chance to upset CottoBy Bob Smith: The key to the outcome of this fight will not be the talents of Miguel Cotto at welterweight or even light middleweight, or what Cotto did four or more years ago. Rather, It will be what he has done since early 2012. And what has he done since then? He lost two fights in a row, to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and then to Austin Trout, handily beat a very over matched opponent in Delvin Rodriguez, then beat a cripple in obtaining the title from the wounded Sergio Martinez.

While he did get the lineal title, he did so because it was a cash out fight for Sergio Martinez, who likely would have lost to any of the top 10 middleweights based on his performance in the ring at the time. Why then is someone who has only defeated a C level journeyman in more than three years given such accolades, when a fighter like Daniel Geale, who lacks a ready made fan base but who also would have beaten Sergio Martinez, shunned and dismissed?

Cotto: If they want to fight with me, they got to agree to catch-weight

1-Press Conference Cotto vs Geale 12 (3)By Dan Ambrose: This Saturday’s catch-weight fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) appears to be only the beginning of the catch-weight fights for the 34-year-old Cotto, because he’s saying that if fighters want to face him, they need to agree to a catch-weight.

Cotto won the WBC middleweight title off of a catch-weight against former WBC champion Sergio Martinez last year in June despite the fact that Martinez was the champion. He still accommodated Cotto with a handicap. Now Cotto is continuing that trend with a 157lb catch-weight fight against Geale on Saturday.

Will Cotto replace Geale with another opponent if he fails to make 157lb catch-weight?

1-Press Conference Cotto vs Geale 01 (2)By Dan Ambrose: There’s a lot of unknowns going into the Miguel Cotto – Daniel Geale weigh-in on Friday. Geale, 34, might not be able to make the 157 pound catch-weight that Cotto is insisting on for their fight on Saturday night on HBO from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Geale’s promoter Gary Shaw is saying that there isn’t a weight penalty in the contract for the fight. That leaves Cotto with three options if Geale comes in over the 157 pound catch-weight limit. Cotto can cancel the fight, replace Geale at the last second, or fight Geale anyway.

Cotto-Geale fight has no weight penalty in agreement

1-Press Conference Cotto vs Geale 23 (2)By Dan Ambrose: There is nothing keeping Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) from coming over the 157 pound catch-weight limit for his fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) on Saturday night.

As long as Geale doesn’t go over the middleweight 160 pound limit, he won’t be fined and he’ll still be able to fight for Cotto’s WBC title if he comes in over 157. The fine kicks in if Geale goes over 160.

Cotto’s catch-weight will make it difficult for him to get credit if he beats Geale

1-Press Conference Cotto vs Geale 19 (2)By Dan Ambrose: I’m not sure if WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) realizes it or not but he put himself in a bad position by electing to fight No.6 WBC challenger Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) at a catch-weight of 157 pounds on Saturday night rather than taking the fight at the full weight for the division.

It obviously looks bad for a world champion to be insisting that his opponent fight him at a catch-weight in order for him to get a word title fight. Fans want to see things done fairly, and it looks bad that Cotto is electing to drain his opponent Geale for the fight instead of letting him come in at the full weight for the division.

Cotto vs. Geale: According to Miguel a catch-weight is fair

1-Press Conference Cotto vs Geale 15 (2)By Gerardo Granados: The WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto stated in an interview made by ESPN Boxing Analyst Brian Campbell to the question of why was it important to contest the bout against Daniel Geale at a catch weight, that: “I’m not a 160-pounder and I just want to make the game more fair.”

But is it fair to bend the rules? Currently there are only 17 weight divisions and the middleweight division goes from plus 154 up to 160 pounds (plus 69.85 up to 72.574 Kg – plus 11st up to 11 st 6 lbs) and the boxers are allowed to weigh as much as they want between the limit.
