Cotto vs. Foreman: Is Miguel running away from the welterweight division?

Image: Cotto vs. Foreman: Is Miguel running away from the welterweight division?By Jim Dower: On June 5th, the smallish 5’7” Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) will be moving up in weight to take on World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) in a championship bout at Yankee Stadium, in New York. Depending on who you ask, Cotto is either running away from the welterweight division, where he has lost two out of his last four fights and struggled badly in a third fight, looking to win an easy paper title or setting himself up strategically to possibly get a second fight against Manny Pacquiao in the future.

Will Foreman send Cotto into retirement?

Image: Will Foreman send Cotto into retirement?By Dave Lahr: Former WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto has been struggling since taking a terrible beating at the hands of the Mexican tornado Antonio Margarito in July 2008. Since that night in which Cotto was stopped in the 11th round and left a bloody mess, Cotto barely got by Joshua Clottey, winning a questionable 12 round split decision last year in June. And then recently, Cotto was taken out in the 12th round by Manny Pacquiao in November 2009. What made that loss even worse for Cotto was how bad he looked in the fight.

Is Cotto using Foreman to get another shot against Pacquiao?

Image: Is Cotto using Foreman to get another shot against Pacquiao?By Dave Lahr: World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO’s) would like to win an 8th world title in as many divisions before he gets out of boxing in the not too distant future. Fellow Top Rank fighter Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s), who Pacquiao defeated in November by a 12th round TKO, is moving up in weight to go after WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) on June 12th of this year. Foreman, incidentally, is also a Top Rank fighter like Cotto and Pacquiao.

Image: What does Cotto stand to gain from fighting Foreman?By Jason Kim: On June 12th, Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) will be facing World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) in a fight that pits the well known Cotto against Foreman, a fighter that few people aside from hardcore boxing fans have ever heard of. Both Cotto and Foreman fight for Top Rank promotions. Cotto, 29, seems to be on the way down on his career after losing to Antonio Margarito and recently to Manny Pacquiao in knockout losses. Cotto also took a lot of punishment in a 12 round split decision win over Joshua Clottey in 2009.

From reading websites and forums, a lot of people are making Foreman favourite. To be honest, this shocks me due to the Israeli’s lack of experience at championship level and mainly because Cotto is still an elite fighter.

Should Cotto fight Berto instead of Foreman?

Image: Should Cotto fight Berto instead of Foreman?By Chris Williams: Former World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) has been linked with WBA light welterweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 6 KO’s) for a bout that could be taking place in June of this year. However, that seems like a big mistake for Cotto to take this fight, and I think it could backfire on Cotto if he ends up getting beaten again. Foreman, 29, is a lot bigger than Cotto at 5’11” compared to only 5’7”, is hard to hit because of his constant movement, and his sneaky power.

Is Cotto making a mistake in fighting Foreman?

Image: Is Cotto making a mistake in fighting Foreman?By Jim Dower: Former WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) is making a huge mistake in moving up in weight to take on World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) in June. Foreman, 29, has a style of fighting that is all wrong for Cotto. Not only will Foreman have the four inch height advantage, but he also will have a five inch reach advantage as well for a fight against the 5’7” Cotto.

Miguel Cotto: The Future of a Boxing Star In Question

Cotto would have to move up to 154lb which should be no problem for him. The move would be only natural after spending a substantial amount of time at welter weight and arguably a smart one. If Cotto takes this fight and decides to continue his career, there are a few things to keep in mind if he is to reinvent himself in a new weight division.
