Canelo’s trainer: If GGG wants fight, it’ll be at 155lbs

canelo974(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports/Golden Boy Promotions) By Tim Fletcher: Tonight will be Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s fourth consecutive fight at 155lbs when he steps inside the ring to fight Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight on HBO pay-per-view.

While it was hoped that Canelo would finally fight at the full weight of 160lbs for the middleweight division if he gets past Cotto, it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen. Fans want Canelo to fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) next in a middleweight clash.

Roach: Canelo is like basic robot

1-cotto vs canelo 01By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach isn’t at all worried about tonight’s fight against Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) on HBO PPV. Roach has studied Canelo’s fights endlessly for the past two months, and he’s seen enough to know that the 25-year-old Canelo has a very basic fighting style that he sees Cotto having no problems dealing with tonight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach thinks Canelo’s defensive skills are horrible, and he sees him as a very robotic fighter who lacks the fluidity that you like to see in athletes.

Zero chance GGG gets Cotto-Canelo winner

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Tim Fletcher: It looks like IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady GGG Golovkin won’t be getting a shot at the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez fight in their next fight.

According to Dan Rafael, there’s rematch language written in the contract on both sides that suggests that we’ll be seeing a second fight between the two catch-weight middleweights rather than the winner taking on Golovkin.

Purses: Cotto $15M, Canelo $5M

cotto12(Photo credit: WBC Boxing) By Tim Fletcher: Besides experience, Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) will have a huge advantage in the money he’ll be making for his fight against 25-year-old former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) tomorrow night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cotto will be getting a guaranteed purse of $15 million for the fight compared to Canelo’s $5 million. Canelo could get more money from the Mexico TV money. There also be an upside with the pay-per-view money the two fighters will be getting. The fight will be televised on HBO PPV. Weights: Cotto 153.5, Canelo 155

cotto11By Dan Ambrose: At Friday’s weigh-in, a slightly weight drained Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) weighed in at 155lbs on the dot for his catch-weight fight at 155 pounds for non-title fight against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For his part, Cotto weighed in slightly less at 153.5lbs. With the way that Cotto looked, it’s doubtful that he’ll gain a lot of weight overnight when he rehydrates for their fight on HBO PPV.

Cotto will beat Canelo, says Lee

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (9)By Scott Gilfoid: WBO 160lb belt holder Andy Lee is picking former WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) to top Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) this Saturday night in their HBO televised fight on pay-per-view. Lee likes Cotto’s intelligence in the fight, as well as his experience as being factors that will lead to victory over the much younger and heavier 25-year-old Canelo.

Lee doesn’t have any reasons for wanting Cotto to win the fight, because he’s interested in fighting a unification match against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in 2016 if Lee can successfully get past #1 WBO challenger Billy Joe Saunders in their fight on December 19th at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Is it better for boxing if Canelo beats Cotto?

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (3)By Raj Parmar: Boxing critics and fans have been largely divided between who they feel will win the much anticipated encounter between Saul ‘Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto tomorrow night. The match-up will be a another important chapter in the infamous Mexican-Puerto Rican rivalry that exists in boxing and will help clear up the some of the smoke that clouds the middleweight division currently.

Both Cotto and Canelo are two of the biggest draws in boxing now that Floyd Mayweather has retired and Manny Pacquiao has significantly faded from the spotlight. Mayweather retired without a loss and Pacquiao lost to Mayweather; meaning both stars have largely left boxing without recently losing to an active fighter.

Cotto-Canelo: Do fans care about WBC title?

1-canelo-cotto (1)By Yannis Mihanos: Earlier this week the news spread that Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) has been stripped of his WBC middleweight title because he failed to pay the World Boxing Council’s $300,000 sanctioning fee in order for him to have the WBC title on the line for his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight on HBO pay-per-view from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The news spread a bit of panic around, especially to the organizers and the TV channels for the Cotto vs. Canelo fight.
